⬜⬜⬜🟩🟩 Saner
⬜⬜⬜🟨⬜ Tulip
⬜⬜⬜⬜⬜ Comby
🟨⬜🟨🟩🟩 Drier
🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 WiderI needed 3 words just to narrow the possibilities enough for a strategic guess.
Should I switch to a different starting word?
-
If you want to avoid the _a_er, _i_er, _o_er patterns (also causing the pillars of doom for Hard Mode players), you might want to.
I mentioned this to you a while back.
Upside of “saner” is the green position, but the downside is also the green position.
There are a ton of words that end in “er”. So, many so, that E4 is the most common position of the remaining OG NU. (I was E5 originally).
========================================
Part of the advantage of starting with RAISE is that I play the “ER” but I don’t have the letters fall into the ER ending right away.AROSE would give you the same thing, but it could cause similar issues at R2 (but perhaps not as bad).
This would split up the ER words into different pool solutions.
============================================
I’ll have to study the merit of starting with a word that only has one or no vowels in it (using Y as the vowel), and see what happens to the word distributions. If you can evenly distribute the ER words into different solution pools, I think that helps you narrow it down on guesses 2 and 3 (if necessary).

I was thinking WIDER as a second guess, but made two mistakes. 1) Didn’t trust my first instincts. 2) For some reason convinced myself that there were no comparative _ER words, then did a Five Forks word find for “ER ” and only went as far as the Cs or Ds to consider it confirmed. I missed FEWER, FINER, LATER, and surely more. … Not sure why I got that thought in my head.

Wordle 1,942 4/6
🟨⬜🟨⬜🟨 RAISE
⬜🟩⬜🟩🟩 VIPER
🟨🟨⬜⬜⬜ DELFT
🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 WIDERRAISE leaves 4 OG NU
FILER, GIVER, VIPER, WIDER.
Also, 18 ADDs and 5 1YRs.
This is a trap pattern. _I_ER.
I felt VIPER so I went for it. Also rules out GIVER.
Now, I’m left with FILER, WIDER 14 ADDs and all 5 1YRs.
I need to start eliminating letters. I decided on DELFT (which I probably should have played at 2).
That gave me D3.
Only WIDER 58%, EIDER 48% and HIDER 45% remain.
3 guesses left. 3 words.
So, I went with OG NU.
I think if I were only considering OG NU, I probably would have gone FILER to
play the L over WIDER anyway.=============================
Unfinished Jigsaw Puzzle-
Unfinished puzzle – very creative take!
-
Nice.
We’re big on puzzles in our house. … That’s, probably not surprising.
-
It’s not.
We have a jigsaw puzzle going in the kitchen constantly.
We have a jigsaw puzzle exchange network going with our friends and family where we share puzzles with them when we’re done with them and vice verse.
-
Unsurprisingly – I’m a puzzler too, both hands-on & online with Jigsaw World (where I often head post-Wordle)
My fave puzzle story is doing them at night and, near completion, leaving several for my young daughter to piece in. I did a series of Greek ones & Sarah said “I want to go to Greece with you Mum”.
I thought – yeah right – as a teenager she’ll outgrow that
but true to her words – once she started working, she began a Greece-fund for our trip – which we did together including Spain (mostly for Gaudi) & Croatia (for Dubrovnic & Plitvice lakes) in 2019 A wonderful holiday just before all the Shutdowns -
🇬🇷Very cool! My kiddo wants to go to Greece with me, too. Maybe when she’s done with college…
-
We aren’t able to have an ongoing puzzle project, at least not unless we dramatically change our behavior.
We work a puzzle like we have some kind of MacGruber (😉) deadline. At most we’ll have one out for three days, with it keeping us up too late each night in between. But usually, if we’re both working on it, it will be completed the same day. We’re just compulsive that way.
… … … …Does anyone have a favorite puzzle company and/or puzzle styles they like?
We really like Liberty Puzzles for their high quality wooden puzzles, but they are for sure spendy and more of a treat. If we’re talking thrift store buys, I tend to like a lot of the art selections from Pomegranate. My wife has been on a run of really enjoying puzzles with that kind of flat, 2-dimensional, folksy, old-timey, small town theme and look.
-
-
🙋♂️ old school wooden jigsaw puzzle fan here. didn’t intend to write a book but here you go.
as a yute 😉, i did wooden (not cardboard) jigsaw puzzles with my family and with my grandma. the puzzles we typically had were made by jk straus and i still have a few of my favorites.
one christmas, in my teens, my grandma gifted me some victory brand gold box puzzles from the uk and i got hooked on them. they did not give you an image on the box, only a very short name so the only way to see it was to build it.
on the box it states “no guide picture is provided with this gold box victory jig saw puzzle. to do so would destroy much of its absorbing interest. the greatest pleasure is derived from not knowing beforehand the subject which the puzzle will make and then to see the picture gradually form as the pieces are assembled.”
so as a rule since then when doing any puzzle in my collection or elsewhere i do not reference the image when working on it.
what i really like about old school wooden puzzles cut with a jigsaw (though technically a scrollsaw or fretsaw) is the space in between the pieces, it not being as tight a fit due to the material removed by the cut. there are definitely situations where you think a piece is the correct one and it turns out it isn’t. i also really like feeling the karma of the craftsmanship in the hand-cut puzzle and the presence of the artisan.
i do not know if victory was the originator of the whimsical pieces but it was my first experience with them. i do own one older victory puzzle that is not the “gold box” type and it does not have the whimsical cuts.
the original victory company operated from the 1920s to the late 1980s. they clearly made all size puzzles, from ones with very few pieces most likely for the children’s market up to approximately 2,000 pieces for a 40″x30″ finished puzzle (i own two). you will likely see this product range if you search ebay or elsewhere for the victory brand.
when i looked up the victory company i see that the brand was resurrected in 2022 although now being cut with a laser instead of a scrollsaw. reading up on their new victory gold box product line they have not carried forward the “no image supplied” approach but their images do look very vibrant and compelling. i believe i may have just talked myself into giving one of them a go.
one kinda fun thing they also appear to have added is the presence of a whimsical piece, a hand with the “v” for victory sign, the intention of it being the last piece you put in to complete the puzzle. i like the concept as the “last piece” is always an arbitrary decision, typically decided by the puzzle itself. 🤷♂️😎🤯
-
I am puzzled by this nice write up. 😉
-
Very cool, kralc! Thanks for sharing that.
Sounds like Liberty Puzzles is following in the footsteps of Victory Puzzles. They also specialize in whimsy pieces. And I’ve gotten some before without the picture on the front (always an option with them). Liberty has an eagle shaped piece in every puzzle.
The wooden puzzles hold up really well. It’s almost hard to justify getting new ones now that we’ve accumulated a few. We even had Liberty make a puzzle out of a painting by our youngest child. Very special.
I like the oddball shapes that don’t conform to the normal puzzle shape. Usually the edge pieces don’t even attach to each other. There are inner puzzle pieces that attach to two edge pieces. And in a rectangular puzzle there are almost always eight corner pieces.
We usually do these puzzles on a sheet of plexiglass. When we’re done we sandwich it and flip it over so we can look at the whimsy pieces and other patterns. Lots of fun!
-
Snap – like you, to increase the degree of difficulty, (and satisfaction too I guess) when doing any puzzle I don’t reference the image when working on it either.
😎 Neat 🧩story – thanks for sharing 😊

🧠🧩 Train Your Brain Day: Is wordle becoming more about luck lately than brainpower? 🤔
🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲
🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩I mean, if eider, hider, cider, and wider are rated similarly by the bot, then there is no way to expeditiously logic your way to a solution.
There’s always been an “element of chance,” of course. But, now it’s feeling more and more like there’s an “element of logic.”
🤷🏻♀️ I’ve never been in the least bit attracted to games of chance.
-
I was left with the same choices.
EIDER, HIDER and WIDER.
WIDER was an OG NU. The others were ADDs.
WIDER also had the highest WB%.
So, I say for that choice, it is a brainpower.
===========================
As for your choice for DINER, it wasn’t even on my list of answers. So, it was a great filter. I wish I had played DELFT at 2 instead of 3. So, I think that’s brainpower and luck.Incidentally, not too many N’s in the possible solutions I had left. I would have considered DIVER again over DINER to give me the V in VIPER and GIVER.
I was unlucky that VIPER wasn’t the answer. (It was either that or GIVER).
-
No to cider?
If the bot thought all were almost equally probable, regardless of weighted bottles and year 2 repeat, it’s becoming more and more a game of chance.
I see your point though cuz wider was the highest rated and the actual answer. 😝 Though, the highest rated hasn’t been the actual solution a few too many times recently. 🤔
-
Yes! To “the highest rated hasn’t been the actual solution a few too many times recently.”
-
DICER showed up on my ADDs list, but not CIDER.
I just looked it up. It was played.
CIDER #635
@Least
True the WB% hasn’t been a slam dunk on the word choice every time, but, more often than not, it does tend to go to the higher WB% word.
I’ll have to update my graph of WB% to be sure of that.

Now you can start a new streak.

Sean,
I’m not one of the best players, but I use the Wordle Solver Helper Tool to narrow down the possible choices. It is at:
tryhardguided.com/wordle-solver
Before discovering that site I would write down my green/yellow letters on a 5-space grid and read through the 2,309 words on the first NYT Wordle Word List to see what words would fit with the letters I had. The Wordle Helper Tool is a great time saver! After I have a list of possible answers, I run them through the FF Filter to find the words that have not yet been used and the ones that are possible repeats. -
