Hey Jeb, my score posts from today (& maybe even some from yesterday) are stuck in the moderation filter coming up invisible. Could you check the pending queue when you have a moment? It turned out they were in the SPAM comments which I rarely check. Your use of codes with dots looked like multiple URLs to the SPAM checker.
I have modified the code to allow approved commenters to bypass SPAM and MODERATION checks.

Thanks for the heads up. Google Analytics was basically saying “you’ve used up your allotment this hour” and just returned zeros. I’ve worked to make the code much more efficient and am well below hourly thresholds now.
I’ve sure learned a lot managing this site!

Hey Jeb – I love the After Party but I don’t check it, or contribute, every day. I appreciate the players who get more into the details of our beloved game than I do. However, they sometimes use abbreviations or terms I don’t recognize or am able to figure out. It would be great if there was a Glossary of Wordle Terms and Abbreviations here on FF. If there is one already, can you point me to it? Thanks for all you do for us.

hey there, ohh wizard of the forks five🧙♂️. i know you are a busy wizard and have plenty more fish to fry but i just gotta report that i am missing the gray box after party links at the top of the ui. subtle as it is, i took comfort in their anchoring existence.
those are the first things i look for as i always post my own daily comment before looking through everyone else’s so those were my starting point.also, i’m not a big fan of underlined text links, or at least too many of them.
just giving feedback and voicing an opinion.

I did recently set a global color for all links to create some continuity. And you are right, I ended up with excess underlines, especially around the repetitive sub-menu links.
I’ll tidy that up!

It seems to me that the number of unused words remaining in NYTs Wordle solutions list must have an impact upon repeat frequency. Put another way, as the size of the unused word list dwindles, repeat odds should increase.
So, you can’t base your repeat odds solely on historical data of how often repeats are used (approximately 10-11% now), right? Unless some recency bias enters into the calculation? Thanks.

You are right John. I fully anticipate the frequency to go up, and for that reason I’m also monitoring a rolling 90 days for a shift. I have not seen it yet.
I don’t know why they don’t just shuffle the deck every X years and tell everyone they are going to do that. Or the other option is to randomly shuffle every day, and allow for repeats to happen however those chips fall. That would wipe out the utility of the Five Forks List.

Thanks. I think NYT got it right on re-introducing previously used words before the unused list got too small. Otherwise it would have been pretty easy to “game” the game with the increasingly shrinking options among the unused (e.g., whelp, only one k word unused so this has got to be it). I hope they stick with this strategy rather than the alternatives you mention.
Good you’re doing the rolling 90 day analysis; for the reason implied in my paragraph above, the PU percentage will have to creep up.

Issue identified!!! It turns out that there is a “241a” and a “241b” and a “325a” and a “325b” as well as “324a” and “324b” and also “284a” and “284b”
I wasn’t playing back then and consequently never knew about this numbering glitch. Your totals are solid.

I believe I am drilling down on the “WORDLE word total” error. Through “UNCUT” the block list has 4 more entries than the main alphabetical list. The “S” has three more. And the “T” has one more.

One quick test I do is look at the bottom of the the ALPHA / CHRON lists and make sure the bottom lines up! I can get distracted and update CRON (which I do first) and forget to do ALPHA.

Disregard my preceeding post. ???? yields 1875 but with 22 repeats we get to 1897. Same question since 1892+1 still is only 1893.-

Without your posting for 8/25/26 there are 1892# answers with 1 more because they started a 0. Thus we have n1893. Yet when you enter ????? in your search bar today there are1897. How can this be?

I wonder if the editor is using a 20-sided die to determine the next repeat.

What would be on the 20 sides? Answers or number of days to decide to do a repeat?
The patterns are not random in the sense that repeats have happened anywhere from 1 day later to 16 days later, but most have happened in the 9 to 14 day range. That clustering suggests someone is in charge of deciding this every other week.
Almost all of the words have come from the first year of words, with clustering in the first half of the year, which was largely before Wordle took off and before NYT purchase. The clustering also suggests someone picking with some kind of habit. Could be the editor. Or it could be a web tech given rough guidelines.

Numbers 1-20. Roll the die to determine when the next repeat comes.
It’s a commonly used method in board games for probabilistic outcome in 5% increments. I’ve also seen ten 10-sided dice for 1% increments.-

This is an interesting theory.
I think since the historical pattern for REPEATS is about %10, I think, if she did this, it would be a 10-sided die (decahedron) or a 20-sided die (icosahedron). If she rolled the icosahedron, then 0,1 would be considered time for the REPEAT.
Since the pattern is highly irregular, it certainly could be done this way.
However, I think this whole list is curated and not random.
There is a lot of evidence to suggest that there is human choice involved in not only the pattern of REPEATs and ADDs , but also the actual words and the letters they contain.

You could be right, Mike. Although I was thinking something of less effort: on the day of the repeat, roll the D20 to get the number of days until the next repeat.
1 means repeat the next day.
2 means two days until the next repeat.
Etc.So far, the range is 1-16. If we go 21 days w/o a repeat, then my theory will be dashed to pieces like a door after an assault by a Dwarf with a +9 War Hammer!

Michael, I have family that plays D&D. But I haven’t played enough to immediately understand how the dice rolling would go. So I’m curious.
Are you thinking something like this?:
Day one after a repeat, roll the D20 and if it’s a 20 do another repeat. Day two, if it’s a 19 or 20 do a repeat. Day three, 18, 19, or 20 causes a repeat. And, so on.
That would be an interesting method that I think would tend to average out to near 10%. Lower chances, but certainly possible, to repeat in just a few days. Day 10 would be 50/50 day, like a coin flip. Then days over 10 chance would increasingly favor a repeat. Guaranteed a repeat by day 20.
Interesting thought.

Ok, I get your point. So, if they roll the icosahedron, the average number of days would actually be 10.5, because the range is 1 to 20.
That is actually brilliant, because that’s pretty much what the average is.
I think they could easily build that into Wordle itself with a Java random() function. They clearly haven’t yet, because people can see the list of words inside the code. They NEED to encrypt this code!
LOL on the dwarf with the war hammer! I haven’t played D&D since the early 80’s, but I remember it well. Those were some fun times.

for grins i opened a second tab (at a slow time in the states) to see if the count would ratchet up one and it didn’t.
i also note that it appears to refresh the counts pretty regularly.q. are you able to get stats on after party visitors v just ffff users?
just curious how granular these stats are.as always, 🙏 🙏 and rock on with the awesome site you have conjured up.

Thanks for asking kralc! As the Google Analytics admin, I’ve always enjoyed watching the “real time” stats as visitors wake up around the world (largely) and play Wordle. With 10,000 to 15,000 visitors every day, there is no time when the site goes totally dark.
The stats I’m showing are fed directly from a Google Analytics API. They refresh every 50 seconds *or* if you manually refresh.
It all comes from your web browser on your device. You *could* trigger a new count if you used a different browser or different device. In theory you’d see exactly 1 more on the new browser/device than what you just saw. BUT, with so many people coming and going, not sure. Now if you can arrange to go to Borneo…
The fun thing is now everyone gets to see the visitors to Five Forks as they play.
Watch for these two enhancements:
The pop-up table will show all countries (not just top 8).
I may be able to get the U.S. to break out by state / territory. TBD.-
have never noticed this – love it (2 other kiwis & 8 Aussies at the moment….)

Search Button Update:
I am looking to retire the “old” Search button because of very little use. When the Filter search was put in place, it took off, being a more flexible and quicker way to search. It is by far #1. The A – Z index buttons are also heavily used.

wowser, if you mean the green buttons plus small search window at the top of the screen i don’t believe i have ever used until just now when went looking for it.
even when i first came to the site, before the advent of wildcards, i don’t recall ever seeing it or using it.
…and with everything else you have cooked up on the site i don’t ever see that happening. -
I like the search function and still use it … faster than filter if I have a particular word in mind.

1) Type 5 letters in the filter include field to see if word is past used.

2) Type 5 letters

I leave for France in ten days from the western U.S. I don’t want to lose my streak. How do I do this in crossing these time zones? I’ve made this trip before and lost my streak. My current streak is 186. I’m hoping to surpass my previous streak of 198.

Tips:
1. Make sure you are logged into NYT when you play. Travel may not auto-log you in.
2. Your phone’s day / time is what determines which puzzle you see. So make sure you play before midnight whatever your phone says.
3. If you see that you have missed a day, you can back date your phone under settings and play, then set your time back.I have suddenly found it is past midnight when we travel and have really busy days. I’ll just set my phone back to yesterday, play, and then set it back to today and play again!

i did not visit any of the threads, just took a screenshot to document the list.it now it is showing 8/10 with 107 and 0 new and 8/9 w 80 and 1 new.

i have a new enhancement for you to noodle .
as you prolly know, i am in the creek groove for a starter word. today, for example, when a single e hits and i then flip to the ffff for cannon fodder, i am unable to register the second e in the exclude category. putting any letter in that section knocks it out altogether.
wondering if your logic could be tuned to test an exclude element for presence in the include section and filter out only double or multiple letter occurrences. 🤔

I’ve been there myself. I’ll go back in the Five Forks Lab and mull this over. Ideally something similar to include with ? might do it. In your example:
?E??? would mean “exclude E in 2nd position”.
I’ve thought about supporting full regedit (which I’m partially using) but that requires uber-geek skills (which I don’t have!)

I only publish past answers on this site. I do not (personally) use or publish “future information” which generally comes from someone looking under the hood at the code at changes and what is coming up.
ADDs is a derivation of the original answer list and the much larger guess list “hidden” in the code.
That being said plenty of people discuss and share this kind of information in the After Party and I don’t get in the way.

Five Forks is a “past only” list so I do not publish today’s information. That’s a spoil. There have been 18 repeats this year, about 1 in 10. If you look at the Support menu for Hints & Tips, it starts off with how to use the list now that we have repeats.

I can add that with the previous number. The year column is a way to monitor broad shifts in repeat use from year 1 to year 2. We haven’t seen that happen yet.

The phrase ‘high repeat odds’ is misleading. High odds means an event is unlikely.It should be ‘high repeat probability’

ODDs is generally about something happening. In my case I’m giving an indication of a repeat happening. The higher the odds, the more likely it will repeat. But I asked Grok to make sure:

Thanks for the shout out, Bob. Vacation days often screw up my check list of to-do’s. But I resolved to tend to the list FIRST not the AFTER PARTY duties. (Work before Party.)
That being said, given the date/time of your post it should have been updated. Sometimes you have to hit the blue recycle icon next to the update date-time stamp to force a refresh. But the system auto-refreshes at 6 am ET every morning… when I’m working. 😉

Not sure what you mean, Connie. The main and block lists do not give hints. It only reports past answers.
The “After Party” is a place on the site where people discuss Today’s answer, but it should only be visited after playing.

Susan, There are two lists with Wordle: The much larger allowed guesses (about 12,000) and then the smaller list of common, non-plural, non-past words that are answer candidates (about 3,000). The NYT Wordle editors have added some words to the shorter list over time. I do not monitor the “ADD” list and don’t know how, but others monitor them. My publication rule for Five Forks Wordle is past information only, not future. (No spoiling, peeking.) But there are no real rules to the game, so people use all kinds of tools in playing because it’s fun! Thanks for asking!

The “New” solution count is still one day light, which makes a marginal difference to the repeat percentage:

I think that we are still a day light, most likely in the “New” count, as I count 17 repeats through Thursday’s puzzle.
If you add up the number of days from Groundhog Day through July 9th inclusive (Friday’s update), you get 158:
27 + 31 + 30 + 31 + 30 + 9 = 158
But the “New” count (140) and “Repeat” count (17) in that update add up to 157.

Of course, we didn’t have to rely on maths. We just had to scan the list of solutions from 2/2 onwards and count the New and Repeat solutions to get to the correct counts.
I’ve just done that twice using your 21/7 update (with solutions through 20/7), and I came up with 151 New and 18 Repeat.

In the After Party, is there a way to put those blue triangles to the side of each top level comment (or wherever) to make it easier to jump back to the top of the page?
Also, I saw that JD changed his avatar. I have searched everywhere but can’t figure out how to do that. I wanna!

Hello Kim. Missed this. I will look into adding top/bottom links in the comments. I’m also working an idea on having next/previous links on the NEW only so you can quickly jump through the yellow new comments.
Avatar – it involves creating a “Gravatar” at http://www.gravatar.com which is now owned by WordPress. You can register one or more emails to your gravatar and when you use them in comment threads in WordPress (and other social sites) it will use whatever headshot / art you create.
I’m going to work up a how-to to put under the support link on this.

not sure why it happened but i noticed that your comment on june 26 at 8:00pm et did not include a “reply to jeb” at the end. you were a couple of levels in and responding to jd.
i am using safari on an iphone and it didn’t matter if i was in portrait or landscape.
i thought it may have been specific to you but then i noticed it again in a comment from mike s to you at 10:44pm et. mike s did not have a reply to option. it also appears to be a few levels in.
just thought i would bring this to your attention in case there is a fix.

The comment nest stops offering replies at 4 or 5 deep because it all gets too narrow to display.
So the alternative is to just reply up one level.

on the subject of: certainly not trying to create more work for you, i added an emoji to my display name (after seeing it on fran b’s acct 👍) and apparently that moved in to newbie mode.
i do now recall that happening to me back when i first started on your site and tuned up my display name after making a comment or two.my question is this. doesn’t your comment system have an option to make our email addresses the unique key instead of our display name? it is a required field after all and will always be unique.
given that we, as users, don’t appear to have any option to update our respective user icon (though i imagine you could for us but hey, ain’t nobody got time for that).
in any event, it would be cool to be able to personalize our display names whenever we feel like it (or update our icons).
no worries if we can’t. just a bummer to make a change cuz i’m feelin’ like it, then fall in to moderator limbo and be a burden on you…and of course my awesomely witty comments get back burnered 🤷♂️🤓.

The latest update overrides the WordPress moderation rule and allows for us to change our post names now. Now only a new or changed email goes into moderation.

Once again, as of the 16/6 update with the 15/6 solution, the total of new and repeated solutions (currently 133) is one less than the number of puzzles since Groundhog Day (134). Been like this for a few days now.
Not criticising, just know that you’ll want to fix it once you are aware of it.
VERY grateful for your efforts and this brilliant web-site.

Jeb, Thanks for your wonderful work. I had 28 possible solutions for today’s wordle after my first guess. Your list had 27 which had already been used, leaving 1 which allowed me to Wordle in 2!!!!

I was thinking, with the list filters maybe include a clear button.
Really like the filters and this site has helped me narrow choices many times, keep up the good work!

The filter is dynamic in that it shrinks / expands real time as you add or remove letters, which can yield surprises that a clear might miss. BUT, I have also gotten into trouble leaving exclude letters in looking for a specific word.
I’ll mull this over if you still think it is needed.

Ask and yee shall receive. A blue X appears next to the red match count on the Include / Exclude that resets the field.
While working the code I spotted that each field can be separately cleared by with an Esc key while you are in the field. Grok had added that and I never noticed.
I’ll add this to the Tips page.

I gave that a lot of thought. Doing that requires future information. Future puzzles have to be played and examined to post it in advance / same day. So it is a bit of a cheat. This is a past only list.

The site is named after a small place on (some) maps: Five Forks, Georgia where I used to live. I created the Wikipedia entry for Five Forks, Georgia at the time, to help keep it on the map.
It was an old mail stop and the roads “Five Forks Trickum” and “Oak” and “Dogwood” and “River” all intersect there, creating 5 forks (6 directions.)

Final Block List correction:

Can you explain what is the “distant neighbor pair”?

It refers to words next to one another in the alpha list. The distance is how many days separate them. In this example ETUDE was #1807 and its “neighbor” EVADE was #7 (a first week answer) and that set a new record at a day distance of 1807 – 7 =1,800.

I made a technical change to the site that has to do with how WordPress displays all of our green / yellow / gray / black squares. It was auto-substituting images (svgs) instead of unicode text and that was causing some copy/paste problems.
It turns out the site displays pages much faster because of that, so an unintended benefit.
Let me know if you noticed anything positive or negative with the change. In my tests it all looks the same, but older browsers may see something different.

This is probably only a me and my old phone problem. So don’t make any changes just on our account. I’ll likely be getting a new phone in July anyway.
But you asked, so I’ll report.In texts, my phone semi-randomly displays the color boxes as the famed ‘we don’t have that emoji’ boxes with Xs in them. This issue in my family Wordle text chain (of days gone by) is part of the reason I started giving my solutions titles. No one else’s phones had this problem.
Examples from today: everyone’s last green line is visible; I can see all the yellows and greens in Elaine’s solution; I can only see the colors in the last line of my solution; but I can see the last 3 lines of your solution, but not the colors above; some solutions have colors visible on the top line, but not in lines after that until the last.
Again, it’s very random. And again, don’t change the improved performance of the website for the sake of one old phone. … But if someone has any recommendations for what I can do to change my phone’s performance…

In modern terms my phone is nearly ancient. It’s almost 10 years old. I have a Galaxy 8 with Android Version 9, assuming I’ve looked everything up correctly.
The shared solution images *have* changed visually for me in the last two days. Before, my phone showed all color boxes appropriately. Your mention of unicode text images (or some such foreign to me language) in a reply to kralc suggests why what I see now in the After Party is like what my phone shows when Wordle is shared through text messages.
But again, don’t sweat it. I will eventually have a new phone. And more importantly I can figure out the color boxes from the given words. It’s all good. 👍

Not so Fun fact- if you do that, and you clear your browser cache- you lose your entire play streak. Ugh!
This happened to me when I was just shy of a one year streak. 145 days ago. I was in a remote area and I thought if I cleared my history it might improve my connection.

You can sign up for a free account and Wordle will keep your history in the account. In that way if you change devices or browsers, and log in, all of your history is kept in sync.

I vowed not to sign up after NYT tried to coerce us by cancelling the stats……. and looked at signing up a coupe of weeks back – read up on the details / sharing etc. and did not proceed!

I held off on setting up an account for a long time. When I finally did, even a few years ago my streak was reset a few times by glitches. This is why I track my stats on a spreadsheet. The app is actually pretty nice.

I am a fan of the new dynamic search feature, but I think a great addition would be to make words searchable by date and # as well. For example if you type 06/19/21 or #0, it brings up CIGAR
