[Cut to the crowd of 🥳 After Party protesters holding signs]:
Thanks Jeb for noting “SNL 1975” Day! It really makes you realize how much the show shaped our entire culture. So many everyday catchphrases people say—like “Debbie Downer,” “I need more cowbell,” “makin’ copies,” or saying a sentence and adding a sarcastic “…NOT!” came straight from SNL.
SNL has been one of my biggest influencers ever since grade-school when I watched the first show back in 1975.
My vocab was built on SNL-isms like “Oh no, Mr. Bill,” “cheeseburger, cheeseburger, pepsi,” “Two wild and crazy guys,” “must consume large quantities,” “I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and doggone it, people like me,” and “Well, isn’t that special?”
My SNL obsession turned me into a lifelong (very) amateur skit writer and performer for family, friends, parties, and even my high school assemblies.😬🤦🏻♀️ If there was an event, I was writing a skit.
In my naive yout, I thought it was my destiny to write for SNL. haha lolz 🤣 After later reading about the notorious after-parties and drug culture, I’m grateful I stayed watching safely from the couch! 🛋️✨
⭐️ My all-time fave sketches: Back Home Ballers and King Tut
… followed by More Cowbell and Matt Folley in a van down by the river
📋 An incomplete list…. but a start…
“Well, excuuuuuse me!”
“Oh no, Mr. Bill!”
“Cheeseburger, cheeseburger, cheeseburger! No Coke, Pepsi!”
“We are two wild and crazy guys!”
“Well, isn’t that special?”
“It’s always something!”
“Jane, you ignorant slut.”
“We are from France.”
“Never mind!”
“I’m Chevy Chase, and you’re not.”
“Schwing!”
“Party on, Wayne! Party on, Garth!”
“We’re not worthy! We’re not worthy!”
“I live in a van down by the river!”
“I need more cowbell!”
“Could it be… SATAN?!”
“Da Bears!”
“I am El Niño! Which is Spanish for… The Niño!”
“Pump you up!”
“That’s the ticket!”
“I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and doggone it, people like me.”
“Superstar!”
“If it’s not one thing, it’s another!”
🥺 Well… I’m feeling a little verklempt… talk amongst yourselves.
🐸 Kim (aka Amy, OG Nerdler, FFAP Queen, Grammar Police Chief)
Thanks for posting all those SNL quotes. It’s incredible how many I use on a regular basis, or at least pop into my noggin whenever someone says “…down by the river…”, mentions the Chicago Bears, or even turns 50, à la Sally O’Mally. I didn’t start watching until my 20s, but it has been part of my weekly routine ever since. My favorite sketches include the ESPN Classics, Spartan Cheerleaders, Close Encounter, Balls, The Californians, Dick in a Box, Chippendale Audition, Toonces the Driving Cat, Black Jeopardy, Mr. Robinson’s Neighborhood, Stefan on Weekly Update, Bring It on Down To…, and Census Taker. The Cold Open and Weekend Update is what I most look forward to each week. I can’t imagine SNL not existing.
🥸 Christine the Benevolent Slater in EZ Mode
Thanks for your awesome additions to the list … which also reminded me of Cheri Oteri playing Rita Delvecchio… and, yes… All my friends got a Sally O’Mally skit at their 50th… I can kick and stretch and kick… 😆
You’re right—I can’t imagine SNL not existing, either.
Mike S
Just some of the things SNL has made me do:
– When a product is advertised as doing two things, I’ll say, “It’s a floor polish *and* a dessert topping!”
– When I’m washing dishes and someone adds a bowl to the pile, I’ll start rapping, “Bowls, bowls, all types of bowls.”
– If someone drops something, I’ll act out “Throw it on the ground!!”
– When my wife watched Dowton Abbey and the ‘Created By’ credit came up (Julian Fellowes), I’d say, “I’m Brian Fellows,” and laugh as I imagined him narrating the show.
– And, for a time, I couldn’t be taken shopping without picking something up, stating it’s intended purpose, then adding, “… And you can put your weed in there.”
🥸 Christine the Benevolent Slater in EZ Mode
Ooo Mike, that is so funny… I never went to the copy machine in the 90s without saying, “going to the copy machine, makin’ copies”… I mean, it’s not even that funny. It just became a cultural inside joke kind of thing.
🙋🏻♀️Maybe you can do an audio clip of you doing the “bowls bowls all types of bowls”. 🤭
Mike S
In addition to all the great lines and characters SNL has produced throughout the years, I’d also highlight the short films and impressions.
Short films from commercials, to over the top animations like The Ambiguously Gay Duo, to the poinient like John Belushi as the last surviving member of the cast.
And Rich Little couldn’t hold a candle to all of the memorable impressions SNL creates. Spot on and exaggerated political takes, and so many more.
🐸 Kim (aka Amy, OG Nerdler, FFAP Queen, Grammar Police Chief)
I totally forgot about The Ambiguously Gay Duo! Hilarious! 🤣
I agree that some of their best works are the SNL Digital Shorts. I especially love the ones with The Lonely Island: I Just Had Sex, Motherlover, Lazy Sunday (“It’s The Chronic-, What?, Cles of Narnia!”), and your aforementioned Threw it on the Ground. I even have that CD of The Lonely Island and several of the songs are on my driving playlist.
Honestly, I could go on and on about my favorite SNL sketches and impressions (Tina Fey’s Sarah Palin was legendary). It’s incredible how much of an impact they have had on pop culture.
🥸 Christine the Benevolent Slater in EZ Mode
You guys are making me so nostalgic!! We need a wordle After Party for SNL fans… 🤭

Well done.

I’d like to share a SNL funny flashback.
A few years ago, I was watching the most recent production of Little Women. (Fortunately, in my family room, not at a theater.) There was a dramatic scene when Jo and Theodore, aka, Teddy/Laurie were skating and Jo fell thru the ice. I think she was with Teddy. Doesn’t matter.
I burst out laughing at the scene that clearly wasn’t suppose to be funny.
All I could picture was Chris Farley as Jo in a get up from the era, speaking so eloquently, and suddenly falling thru the ice. The bad language was hysterical and the dramatic change in behavior was the best. Classic Chris Farley. Hope you caught that one.

That’s hysterical Judy L! I miss him. Did any of you see the documentary about Chris Farley? It was lovingly and well produced.
🥸 Christine the Benevolent Slater in EZ Mode
Judy L—I just went back and re-watched that skit … 😆So.dang.funny.
Least, I’ve not seen the documentary. On my list now! Thanks!
I know a lot of SNL-derived films didn’t get great rating, but, they were often just as funny as SNL. “Fat guy in a little coat.” Classic.

💭 I have some memories of the later seasons of laugh in. 🤔 I remember Lily Tomlin doing Edith Ann in the giant chair and doing the telephone operator: “A one ringy dingy, two ringy dingies.” Snort.
You’re right on—SNL does have common elements—Lorne Michaels was actually a Laugh In writer! I just checked wiki! That is fascinating! You probably already knew that. 😉

Where does Scordle gets its set of likely words? It said the other likely word after sauce was claut — wonder what that word means or what language it’s from.
Mschief
Ok. Looks like claut is a Scottish word
Claut — Common prepositions: out, frae, at, aboot. Scrape is the nearest match, but claut specifically implies the use of the regional tool or a similarly heavy, raking motion.
It’s also a prefect in Italy. Looks like Scordle is multilingual and a master of the obscure. Unlike spell check in my phone which keeps auto correcting claut to Claude. 🤔

You guys are making me so nostalgic!! We need a wordle After Party for SNL fans… 🤭
Good summary of the classic quotes.
Well done.
I am a big fan of the show as well.
It’s rare that a whole concert goes by where I haven’t yelled “More Cowbell!” at some point
Charles you are awesome. 🐮
Legendary!
Love it ! 😄🍾
I used to consider myself somewhat of a wordsmith – but your wonderful, witty wordler way with words eclipses that wee vanity of mine…
Awwww shucks… I think we have an embarrassment of riches on this forum! It’s not just a collection of clever nerdlers, but a community of wonderfully witty, poetic minds. From the long-winded (moi) to the pithy and everything in between.
I cannot tell you how much I’ve enjoyed reading everyone’s posts. So many times I’ve pressed a phantom “love it” button on here.
Oh Christine the Benevolent…😂😂😂
I think you could have written for them 🤩
It premiered when I was in college and what an impact on the college crowd. That original cast was something! Thanks for the memories!
Clever and funny. Tribute to SNL and Tina, et al.

…and really lovin’ all the snl memories and tributes. 🤔 also remembering how back in the day, not sooo long ago😉, you had to be present to win (so to speak). if you weren’t camped in front of the tv (aka idiot box😉) at showtime you missed it. 🤷♂️
your awesome news flashes actually remind me of gary owens, the announcer for rowan and martin’s laugh in, a predecessor to snl. i see and hear gary’s great voice, delivery and signature hand over the ear look as he reads your script into the microphone. classic! 😎🤯
… so many 💥 and 🧨! Feeling verklempt! Yes, I missed a lot of SNL as an adult because I didn’t have live tv… ever.. But, the library had vhs and dvd and then came along yout-ube… Plenty of time in front of the boob tube 📺.
🎙️ Do you think we could get Ted to do the radio version of my news flash? 🥸. yoohoooo Ted … 🌎 to Ted … Yo. Ted. Pick up your phone. ☎️

Where does Scordle gets its set of likely words? It said the other likely word after sauce was claut — wonder what that word means or what language it’s from.

After the game, WB revealed 4 OTHER options AVIAN (PU), HIJAB, DIVAN and PAGAN. Last 3 added to my list now. LUCKY because I probably would have played PAGAN if I had all the possibilities laid out in front of me
I was also lucky not to have thought of PAGAN. I too started with the A set, but then had a floating P in my second guess. … Cheers to luck!
