Anyone hear of the game Poople? 💩 Just discovered it and it’s really fun! Each day it starts with a different 4-letter word and the goal is to get to POOP in as few turns as possible by changing one letter with each turn to make a new word. For those days when you want to forgo the analysis and just guess, it’s a great alternative.
https://poople.io/
That’s pretty funny! In some ways it’s harder because you can’t necessarily be as methodical.

I just heard that Pete Byrne of Naked Eyes died last week at 74. I’d say that “Always Something There to Remind Me” was their ELEGY.
I learned recently that song was written by Burt Bacharach. I went to a concert called “Going Bacharach” which was really great. I didn’t realize he wrote so many well known songs including that one!
I’ll bet that was an awesome concert. I believe HD/BB were known for writing single syllable words in their lyrics. One of my all time favorites is Herb Alpert singing (and playing his horn) “This Guy’s in Love with You”
https://youtu.be/Th87XzrmGO4?si=2hjg5thNOOxFkSRi
He did write a ton of hits. I had no idea that was one of them!
Before that concert, I always thought it was a Naked Eyes original too.
I was more familiar with Promises, Promises, but don’t remember him at all.
MN public radio was playing New Wave music in honor of his passing this week.
I was totally into New Wave in the 80s! 🌚 🌊That was the one time in my life that my hair was kind of straight, but only because it was so destroyed from powder bleach. Still listen to a lot of that music.
👨🏻🎤 Me, too! My 20 yr old loves the 80s, too and we were listening to The Cars recently. Suddenly, I realized that The Cars were some of the first New Wave music, though I never thought of them as such.
OMG Tears for Fears, Duran Duran, Simple Minds, Flock of Seagulls (talk about insane hair) 🧑🏻🎤… Did you have a new wave haircut? 🤔
That whole period with new wave and punk introduced some of the strangest looks (why is there not an emoji for a mohawk?) 🤣
Not to sound like a New Wave snob, but my tastes were a little less mainstream, though not totally obscure. Favorites included Depeche Mode, The Smiths, Stephen Duffy, The Cure, Book of Love, OMD, Communards, Bronski Beat, Yazoo, Plimsouls, Howard Jones, Love & Rockets, The Church, Talk Talk, Ultravox, Echo & The Bunnymen, Modern English, Psychedelic Furs, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Jesus and Mary Chain, and Scritti Politti, to just name 20. 😆
My hair went through several different phases during that time. The most extreme was when I trimmed the sides down to about 1/8” and kept them my natural dark brown, while the top and back were long and bleached white. The top stood straight up about 3”, so kind of a fauxhawk. Later I bleached it all platinum. My hair felt like straw, but it looked awesome! Think Thompson Twins, but way cooler. 😉
But mine was never as cool as my 46-year-old brother’s. For the last couple years, he has had a true mohawk that he styles in a 4-inch-tall fan. It’s currently dyed yellow for his school colors (he’s a high school science teacher), but he rotates that with pink and blue. Though his has nothing to do with New Wave. He just decided one day that he needed a new hairstyle—rightfully so—and his stylist talked him into the hawk.
I was into the same music in the 80’s.
I had a muffin cut for a while.
I was also into Goth music like Bauhaus, Joy Division and the bands that came from them including Tones on Tail, Love and Rockets, and New Order.
Oh wow… now we’re talking. 👨🏻🎤 Ur not a snob at all… just good taste. (I was into most of what you list in the 80s, too 🤭.) Hey… Did you see Howard Jones was on tour this summer? 🤯 A lot of what you list I consider post punk and indie.
When it was all said and done… my favorite band that came out of the 80s is OG new wave Talking Heads. David Byrne is still a top fave.
I lived in the England in the 80s, so I saw some pretty crazy hair: 2+ FEET high mohawks were common sightings in London (a sea of “unique” punksters 😜).
Would be fun(ny) to have seen your fauxhawk and JD’s muffin cut back in the day. I bet U2 were cutie patooties. All I did was dye my hair fuchsia. All of it 😉👩🏻🎤
… I could (and do) blab on forever & ever when it comes music… (or anything, actually …) 🤦🏻♀️

**An Elegy for the Death of an Eagle**
There once was a TWO
that might have been.
A twofer.
A deuce.
An eagle.
A glorious little 🦅
on the long, winding road to 1,000 threes.
But, ALAS!! I did not look at Weighted Bottles! NO not that!
Had I looked, I would have seen that PLIED, CLUED & PLIER—despite being OG nu words—were <3% in the WB and, apparently, not really contenders at all.
I sought a possible-word filter.
There were none.
So I did what any sensible Nerdler would do in such circumstances:
**PUKER🤮.**
A perfect filter whomp word leaving only ELEGY.
The only possible ➕ was GLUEY, which of course would have been my choice over ELEGY anyway to fit a somewhat predictable ➕pattern.
🤖 went with CURED, because apparently bots have their own ideas about mourning.
And so the Two That Never Was passed quietly into the great Wordle graveyard. 🪦
But!
**Three it is.**
Again.
And with today's three, I am now at **921 birdies** on my way to a goal of 1,000.
So perhaps this isn't really an elegy after all.
More of a **celebration of a very respectable three**
with a brief moment of silence
for the eagle I unnecessarily whomped to death.
🦅🪦
Wow!!
Fly high and proud, birdie!
Some solutions practically write the story themselves. Unless yer Kralc, in which case every solution somehow comes with a damn good story.

⬜⬜⬜⬜🟨 RAISE
⬜🟨⬜🟨🟨 BETEL
🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 ELEGY
RAISE leaves 19 OG NU.
I have limited access to my spreadsheet on the weekends. It’s hard to look at it on my iphone. So, I didn’t feel like looking up the WB% or the ADDs or the 1YRs.
BETEL is my standard filter for this pattern even though it is slightly obscure.
5 words start with B. 10 words contain an L. 9 words contain EE. Only 5 contain the T, but’s very helpful especially since FLEET and ELECT are still NU.
The only words that it doesn’t solve are COVEY, HYMEN and UNWED.
BETEL leaves only ELEGY.
=============================
Australia II turned upside down revealing the winged keel.
The Americans were really upset! They’ve been had!
Pretty good play without benefit of your spreadsheet.
Thanks!
Neither of us looked up WB today sounds like. I could have benefited from it. 🤦🏻♀️
Given the number of possibilities, a good filter word (like your PUKER) results in a 3 just as often in these cases.
BETEL only gives me a 1 in 18 chance of a 2 if its an OG.
If it were an ADD or a 1YR, it might have been a 4 or 5 for me.
I filtered for ADD and the 1yrs with puker… it’s taking a lot longer to play the game now—to do it that way.
I don’t see how today wasn’t an ➕ 🤔 Probably tomorrow? 🤷♀️ Or… Maybe the “plan” has changed…again.🤷♀️
Am I the only one that never uses filter words? Every one of my guesses has to be a possible answer. I’ll admit it sometimes gets me into trouble, but it seems to improve my averages overall. 🤷🏻♀️
My idea of a “filter” may be different than others.
It’s usually an OG NU that eliminates as many of the other OG NUs as possible. So, it usually shares as many common letters as the rest of the group. I love to pick one that has the most common first letter. So, its more of an “intersection” guess.
If there is no suitable word on that list, then I play a burner word, but it’s not my preference, because then I can’t get a 2!
I’m always going for the answer with each round. This is one of the reasons I play in hard mode (which I think makes it easier to solve because there are fewer options).
I never use a non-solution filter word unless it seems like I might otherwise lose, but I would say you can still think of a solution as a “filter,” with some being better than others.

We match today. One of these days cleat will be the word. Sooner than later I hope 🤞
It’s on my Starts List so hopefully I pick it that day!
Wordle Twins today! I hope and pray I start with Cleat the day it’s the answer! I look over the answers for about the past 10-12 days to see if any of the most common letters are absent or used only once and I try to include those in my first guess.

Tumbleweed against a fence
“tumbleweed against a fence”? shouldn’t that be the Australia II on the ocean?
Good one!
It is interesting posting here as a ‘no charts’ player amongst many charts, stats and lists players.
I too feel a compulsion to wonder what it’s like on the other side. Recently I’d been thinking about using those pre-NYT first year words to make a rotating list of strong starters. Maybe I’d occasionally hit the rare repeat in one, maybe not.
But sometimes there is a sense of ‘what did I do wrong today’ when comparing results, even though the play style isn’t fully comparable. Today for example, so far I am the only person to have played ENEMY at all. So my 4 stands out and feels like a mistake in my play somewhere. But that’s just the way the words came to me. And I very seldom get 5s, and rarely any more get 6s (26 total). So I just have to constantly remind myself that my game is not a chart and list based game. So my play is just uniquely mine, not mistaken.
So you do you, Meg. 😊
Go Mike !!
* Correction: I have 28 6s
… Carry on.
