Grid art: The bee from yesterday resting on the ground against a tree
===============
Likely my last commentary about repeat statistics, at least for a while:
Jeb pointed out that there is too little repeat data for a regression model. He is probably right. So there is one last way that I wanted to look at the repeats: counting, for each day when it has been X days since the last repeat, what proportion of those days have ended up having a new repeat?
For example, there have been 23 repeats, so there have been 23 days directly after those when it has been 1 day since repeat. Exactly one of those days has resulted in a new repeat, meaning 1/23 (4.35%). Clearly, the denominator for total instance of X days since repeat will decrease as X increases, since every repeat resets the counter.
In doing this analysis, I noticed two errors in the Days Δ column of the FF Repeat Stats table: BATON should be 8, and STOUT should be 9 (currently, they are listed as 7 and 10). [Update: BATON should be 7/3 not 7/4, which impacted both. The 7 and 10 are correct for BATON and STOUT.– Jeb]
This is just descriptive and not necessarily predictive, especially at the larger “Days After a Repeat” values with small sample sizes, but it is interesting and might tell us something:
Days After a Repeat: Proportion with a Repeat (repeats/total possible days)
1: 4.35% (1/23)
2: 0.00% (0/22)
3: 4.55% (1/22)
4: 9.52% (2/21)
5: 10.53% (2/19)
6: 0.00% (0/17)
7: 5.88% (1/17)
8: 12.50% (2/16)
9: 21.43% (3/14)
10: 18.18% (2/11)
11: 0.00% (0/8)
12: 25.00% (2/8)
13: 16.67% (1/6)
14: 40.00% (2/5)
15: 66.67% (2/3)
16: 0.00% (0/1)
17: 100.00% (1/1)Here is a graphical view in a chart: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1PSFyUIQpE9fEAYcghrt9Q0CVchAKT1f0/view?usp=sharing

Is that bee under a cork tree? … That must be after he got Ferdinand.
-
EZ: …which means the coefficient of the 4.35% margin must be multiplied by the square root of the math word-salad… and furthermore, pi equals the exact volume of the Excel chart divided by the probability of a third consecutive vowel… but then, if you look closely at the X-axis…
Mike: Is that bee under a cork tree?
-
Hot damn! We have matching math skills as well. 😆
-
I respect all of the mathematical work that goes into the EZ’s, and JD’s, calculations. But it’s not my jam, because that’s not the way I play Wordle.
Also, I’m not too mathy either. So I tend to gloss over a lot of the details because it’s all a bit (see below) to me.

Interesting analysis.
Thank you for the graph also.
I think it shows a very random REPEAT pattern.
There is a small concentration around 8, 9, 10. But there is not enough there to conclude a 10 day repeat bias.
I think the random number generator (mentioned a previous post) is at play here). It’s working like the 20 sided die or 10 sided die theory. In java, it would be written “random(1,20);”. That would give you exactly a 10.5% average.
The long run average is 10.5%. (Last I checked 10.4%).
-
Thanks for spotting the error Ez. I use a spreadsheet but have to transcribe into HTML by hand. For BATTON, I had typed 7/4 instead of 7/3 in the HTML. I fixed the table with the correct date, so the 7 and 10 are correct. (I had 7/3 in the spreadsheet.)

Wordle 1,904 4/6
⬜⬜⬜🟨⬜ RAISE
🟩⬜🟩⬜⬜ STUNK
🟩⬜🟩⬜🟨 SLUMP #202
🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 SOUPYRAISE leaves 28 OG words.
S in the wrong position is the third worst pattern after I in the wrong position (36) and matching no letters (29).
I consider STUNK and SNUCK for second guesses out of this pattern.
U-15, O-13, K-12, Y-8 are the pattern leaders.
All but 9 words start with S.
Neither are great filters that guarantee 3 in a lot of cases
Retrospectively, SOUPY would have been great because of the letter count. U-15, O-13, Y-8, P-6.
STUNK ruled out all unplayed. OG words.
After eliminating words without WB scores and REPEATs > #236, I was left with:
SCUFF – 56%
SCULL – 53%
SLUMP – #202
SMUSH – 52%
SOUPY – 58%Even though the ADD odds > REPEAT odds, I went with SLUMP, because it guaranteed a 4 due to the L, M and P present in the word.

Soupy is an add? Surprising. I’ve definitely started with it before.. and now I won’t again
Same with haiku. Maybe tomorrow I’ll start with it if it’s in there-
Yes. It is an ADD.

Adding on. They’re denoting mistaken plays.
In Christine’s case, an N already determined to not be in the answer.
In Jeb’s case, an O already determined not to be in the place he played it. But he needs a red square for his red square, because the red square should have been in the third space from AROSE instead of the fourth space.
-
that’s hilarious—he needs a red square for his red square. 🟥lolz

Prof. Mike’s group word of the weekTARPS placed the P and gave a floating S. The first word that came to me was WISPY, which placed the Y and effectively made the solution S**PY. The choices were SOUPY and SOPPY. After three months of U words, SOUPY was my pick.
Good ☀️/🌃 to all!-
Well played ADK.
The Bot uses TARPS for his opening word in Easy mode. But it doesn’t appear it will be the answer. So I’ve never understood why they use it.-
Strange… the 🤖 always uses SLATE as the opening word in easy mode for me.
-
Dunno! For me it always plays SLATE when I have it on the “Use knowledge of past solutions” setting in Hard mode. When I turn that off, it uses TARPS.
-
OMG. I just repeated what you said. I am losing it! 🤦🏻♀️
-
Thanks for clarifying.
-
-
It depends on if you have it set to Use Knowledge of Past Solutions. That setting uses SLATE, while TARPS is used if the option is toggled off. I think I had a thread about that sometime in July. It drove me nuts for weeks before I figured out what caused it.
-
I’m flattered!
-
And… of course, I forgot to look to see if ADK was in hard mode. Kralc taught me that if there’s an asterisk, then it’s hard mode and thar ‘tis as plain as can be. 🤦🏻♀️ I am a dork.
-
-
I think TARPS is for hard mode and SLATE is for easy mode.
I think this makes sense to avoid a _LA_E type pattern in hard mode while still playing some high frequency consonants.
It’s also notable that only one vowel is played. No E, O, or I.
If I played hard mode, I might start with a similar word. (Maybe on the reset!)
Maybe, the hard mode people can chime in here, but it may be more about preventing a loss than getting it in 2 or 3.
-
JD – The Bot always plays SLATE when you click “Use knowledge of past solutions” setting in Hard mode. When you turn that off (but still in Hard mode), it uses TARPS.
