My process is to get the vowels locked in place first. In the early days, there was no repeated vowel trickery like we’ve had in the last few months. It seems to me, anyway, that part of the difficulty back then was to change it up from day to day. Not now…Today I thought we would have O and I for our vowels.
#1 OPTIC – I was half right. The I was green, too, so it was in the right place. Having three letters sure gives you a better chance of getting the word on the second try. I thought of PATIO. I knew it had been used sometime this year so it being a repeat was out of question. So, I changed the position of the letters I had from PTI to TIP and that’s when I thought I had it. Checked the archive and it came up as Not Found.
#2 STRIP – Cool! 😃 That’s my 133rd #2 finisher.-

Hi all,
In response to the comment by Least Was Genius Word today about the original NYT word list, you can do a search for:Wordle Words List (All 2309 Five Letter Words)
I tried to paste the link, but I don’t think links work from this site.
However, Ms. Bennett is now using an expanded list of 3,150 past and future answers. I have not found a source online for that list but if anyone has a link for it, please share.
Also, below is the title of an interesting article about the expanded Wordle Word List. A search on Google should lead you to it:

With 3211 words on the WB list, and 29 identified removals. That leaves 3182.
Do you have any information on this 3150 number? That’s 32 fewer words than I have identified.

I asked Gemini, 3150 is a loose reference to 3158 word list which the Weighted Bottles list was back in July 2023.
This list is dynamic; so, they are adding and removing words from this list periodically.
I would think if a word was suggested from the general public, it might find its way onto this list first before it gets played.

In any case, it seems like enough words to keep Wordle going for quite a while.

Keep in mind that the 3200 total includes the original answer list of 2315 words plus the 40+ words already added and played.
Without doing the calculations, I know the potential “ADD” list is at least 600. That’s way more than the unplayed 2315 words which is less than 480 now. 600 words could keep the game going for almost 2 years without the need to REPEAT.
Of course, she will do REPEATs though.
BTW, I need to start checking the FF list to make sure I don’t play a REPEAT that has already REPEATed! It’s going to get to that point pretty soon.

I always try to select the more common word (as a tiebreaker).

Wordle Tools identified this by examining the Wordle Bot tool (also owned by NYT).
The Weighted Bottle % is what Wordle Bot uses to recommend a word choice.
For whatever reason, 58% is the level that the programmers use to identify a certain common word. Words that are likely to be answers have WB scores from 40% to 58%. You can think of the 58% score as 100% chance of it going to be played.
There are words with WB scores from 0%-4%. These words will not likely be answers.

It matters, because Wordle Bot is a tool that NYT created and it uses the same answer list as Wordle as a base.Even the oddball ADD’s like LORIS and PSHAW have high Weighted Bottle scores (over 40%).

Since several in the top 10 NYT wordlers’ starting words (stare raise arise train irate) had 3 active tiles today, it makes sense the NYT avg presently is 3.2 (60% got it in 3).
PROCESS SHARE: I put all the possible words in a table/grid (using 🍎Notes), create letter frequency list (H3 R2 X Y2 P3 Z C K2 N W F I5 O4 U2 OO4), and then see which word is the best filter. If none are perfect, I look at my ongoing list of possible 2nd word filters (count, pinot, prion) or try other possibilities (porky, porny, horny). Who else does something like this and if so, any suggestions? 🙏

RAISE is based on the overall letter frequency “yellow score” at least initially. Then, RAISE was selected over ARISE and SERAI for the “green score”.
This is all based on the unplayed 2315 words.
This was the basis of my question yesterday.
I would rather get a letter in the wrong position than not match it all.
I would rather get 2 letters in the wrong position than one in the right position.
So, I do a version of what you do, but I prioritize matching the letter rather than getting them in the correct position.
You’re going to make me to post the entire letter frequency chart soon. I think. If I could post a table on this site, it would be a lot easier.
Some of the original optimal letter positions changed since day 1. (e.g. E4 is more common than E5. Y5 is more common than E5.)
