      Hi there!

Oh my gosh I hope you’re playing the lottery! Great odds for weeks now.

    2. Kim is back!

  3. Correction: I referred to “begun” as the past tense of begin, and then remembered that began is the past tense of begin. Begun is the present participle and needs a helping verb such as “have” in the famous quote by John Paul Jones, Revolutionary War hero: “I have not yet begun to fight.” Our 4 daughters like to call me “The Grammar Witch,” but doesn’t everyone want a private iMessage to let them know the grammatical error/s in their text messages? 😃

    ⬜⬜🟨🟨🟨 Crane
    🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 Penal

I went with the old standby Crane which gave me 3 letters in the wrong position. This led to 4 possible answers: Apnea, Began, Oaken, Penal, plus one possible Repeat from 2021: Panel. My instinct was to guess Began, a nice common word to give us a break! Then I saw that the past tense Begun was an answer in April of this year. Penal had the highest letter by position score of the 4 words not on the PUL and would rule in/out the other 3 words and also Panel, the possible Repeat from ‘21. I was surprised but happy to join the others who got a score of 2 today. 🙂

      Way to go!

    2. Nice.

It’s also another word starting with “P” to go with “PURSE”. This is why I tried “PLUSH” yesterday, but it wasn’t to be.

STEAL left 10 possible. 7 were used, some quite old. This left a delightful trio: FECAL, PENAL, RENAL. I guessed well.

Wordle bot told me 11 remained after STEAL. Why do you think you often get a different count than me using the same start word?

      2. I don’t think the “sea of greens” is all that significant.

Thinking of which. What would you rather have? One letter in the correct position or two letters in the wrong position?

One thing I sometimes think about is there a way to measure the “value” of that. Is one letter in the right position just as good as 2 letters in the wrong position?

I would think it largely depends on which letters are being matched.

        What do you guys think?

        1. 🥸 Christine Avatar

Agreed—Sea of Greens is meaningless and random. A sea of yellows, on the other hand, now there’s something you don’t see every day. I had to work hard to get that skill score of 8. Ima dork. 😜

In re: measuring the value … it 100% matters which letters we’re talking about, as you said. It’s the combination that eliminates the most NU words that I care about. If it’s the right letters & letter placement, 2 yellows could be better than even 4 greens (I just checked my chart to verify this).

It wouldn’t surprise me a bit if you knew how to formulate this as a tool with your elite analyzing skills. It would certainly be interesting.

          1. I think so, but I obviously haven’t done it yet.

I would probably measure the “value” by the average number of solutions it eliminates.

Most likely the position and the letter make a difference.

Greetings fellow SLATEr! I’m sorry I missed your post yesterday 🤦🏻‍♀️ Slate has been good to me— though I know from JD that RAISE is the best option. Change is so hard. 🔺=🪨

Your monthly averages are amazing and it looks as if you have been on a major improvement trajectory over the years. I wish I had the energy/time to map out all my scores over the last 4 years like JD does, then I could see improvements (hopefully) year over year- which would be fun!

      1. In regards to the averages, It took some time up front to enter in all the data, but once that was done, it’s just a matter of keeping up with it.

I don’t think it took more than an hour or two, but it was so long ago now, I don’t recall.

That said, you could just start from a certain date. You don’t have to go back to the first day you ever played. That would be easier.

In regards to everything else, I’ve said many times, don’t do what I do if you just want to enjoy the game.

I’ve spent countless hours examining lists of words. I don’t think most people would enjoy doing that.

SLATE is a solid starting word. If it’s working for you, I don’t see a reason to change it (until it isn’t working.)

        1. I’m sure you’ve written it out extensively elsewhere, but how did you determine that RAISE is the best starting word? Did the determination change at all once they started adding in repeats?

          1. Short answer (I’ll try)
            ===================
When the analysts first started analyzing Wordle. They found the most common letters were E A R O T.

As a conclusion, they settled on ROATE as the best starting word. (better than ORATE, because there are more words that starting with “R” than “O”…)

As we know here at FF, they are more likely to play an unplayed word than a REPEAT.

So, in my analysis, I ignore REPEATs. Thus, the fact that they started REPEATs on 2/2/26 has no bearing. They have a REPEAT about %10 of the time.

ADD’s are ignored also, because their odds are also %10.

So, I just focus on the unplayed words in the 2315 list (the original answer list).

I computed the presence of each letter in the remaining words (the same way the original analysts considered the entire list).. This is a dynamic list; so, it changes every day as words get played.

Based on the 478 remaining words, the most common letters are.

            E R A S I. (in that order)

The best anagram of ERASI is RAISE, because it puts the letters in the best position to get more “greens” than SERAI or ARISE.

            ================================
So, this are the best odds long term.

Lately, ROATE might have been better over the last 30 days, but hindsight is 20-20 (as they say).

      2. Greetings.
Truthfully, I just started doing monthly averages when I saw others being posted here.
NY Times keeps track of my stats in a bar graph. I like that a lot.
I play with 3 other people. No bar graphs for them. They’re on their phones on an app. I keep track of their scores though. On New Year’s Eve, I give each a handmade ornament with their year-long stats on the back. Fun tradition.
