STEAL, RHINO supposedly left two possible, but I wasn’t about to try DROIT while ORBIT was unused.
Very clever to avoid that nasty DROIT
We made our annual visit to the state fair yesterday and, as always, stopped in at the Department of Forestryβs βEnchanted Forestβ to pick up a free tree seedlingβchose cork oak this year to add to our back forty coppiceβand they had a cute little FAIRY house set up at the base of one of the giant redwoods. π§π»ββοΈ π‘ I wish I had taken a picture, but the only photo I thought to take was of the blue ribbon Hereford bull, Fabian. I scrolled my 2315 Unused Words list for words including I and R when ORBIT whispered to me.

Nicely done.

I love cows too! I clipped a pic of a bunch that completely blocked a 2 lane road in the mountains and captioned it to my friends and familyβ¦

Iβm thankful to be one of those with a 2 today. Trace led to 4 words not on the PUL: Brunt, Droit, Grunt, and Orbit. I was concerned about a Repeat of Front or Print, both from 2021, but decided to focus on the 4 words not on the PUL. Orbit would rule in/out the other 3 words, so itβs fortunate for me that Orbit was the answer.
Ah, another ring bearer.
I guessed ORBIT thinking I was setting up for a repeat of CRUST (23). Though at that point it could also have been GRUNT, unused, and I don’t know what else.
Nice 2 Elaine!

RAISE leaves 7 words that I care about.
DROIT and DIRTY guarantees a 3 in all cases but themselves.
I thought since LORRY was yesterdayβs word that there could be a run on words ending Y.
I also decided that since DIRTY is more common and it was first alphabetically on my list that it may be more likely. Instead ORBIT is the last on the list.

I had a dream last night and Yada Yada Yada and when I woke up there was a turtle on my lawn.

Darn, orbit was a starter word for me!
I also compete w myself to keep 3βs over 4βs. Iβm 141 over. Repeat words were introduced when I was trying to get 100 over 4βs and struggled for weeks as I was in a rut of 4βs for a while. I laugh at myself because I donβt mind 5βs as it helps my stats!
π₯Do you change starting words every day? Was orbit your past regular starting word?
Thanks for sharing on the personal challenge 3βs over 4βs which you have well surpassed! Do you have any others you can share? Just looking for ideas. π€
141 more 3βs than 4βs is pretty amazing.
141 over is great!
I got to a personal best of 90 over back in May. Then I had a very 4 filled June. I’m just back to 90 over again.
Totally identify with being okay with 5s over more 4s. I was even disappointed with my 2 today. ‘Awww, that’s not a 3.’ π
If you start tracking 2βs vs 5βs, then you care about those more.
This is one point I’m more in line with Big Al on; I find 2s pretty uninteresting. 3s are where it’s at for me.
Besides, …
151 … Twos
192 … Fives
This wouldn’t be worth thinking about unless they were a lot closer.
JD, I track all my solves in a lchart I created in InDesign. Not to be “all investigative” but because I didn’t use the app correctly for a few weeks when I started and wanted to keep those tally’s so I just made my own record…and still do.
Christine, I come up with what I call combo-words that have 3 vowels in first word and 2 in the second and only play the 2nd word if I didn’t get good clues from the first word. I pick one of those starter words based on how lonely I feel a vowel or consonant has been, lol. I have 9 combo words now and they’re weak compared to my older words because I still don’t start with a PU word. I have had 4 one-solve guesses with this method in 1,537 plays (I didn’t start until almost a year in). Those starter words were Ocean, Piano & Media. Glove was also a 1-solve but I threw that out not caring that morning and it was it!
I’m intrigued when Glenda, and others, mentioned using one vowel words to start with – never done that. I do try 2 vowel words I’m waiting to see be used like Fluid, Began, Dairy, & Optic. I won’t start with Orbit again tho.
That’s pretty cool. I have not used InDesign before. I have used Illustrator (in a case where it probably should have been InDesign, but the company I worked for didn’t own that product.)
I keep everything in Excel.
I haven’t tried generating charts / graphs from my data, but suppose I could.
Looks like you started playing Wordle about 45 days before I started.
Do you think the list of answers is random or do you think they consciously or unconsciously create patterns?
JD, I think they do use patterns from time to time. I think of all the double letters lately, then we had a bunch of S’s then a bunch of U’s in a row. Remember when they did Skate and Stake back to back?
Wow! Using InDesign to create a chart of solves seems like an interesting choice. (I was a publication designer and editor for 30+ years and used Adobe CS almost exclusively. That file must be pretty big.)
I keep my solves in an Excel spreadsheet. One of the columns is for the pattern. It is actually five columns wide and six rows long and I fill in the squares with green, yellow, or gray. I have a tab for each month. It works pretty well.
Curious, do you have InDesign through an Adobe subscription? I have a pre-subscription version of the Creative Suite on my older iMac that I keep just for those programs because I wonβt pay for a subscription to software. I was so mad when they did that!
Your combo method sounds very interesting. If I ever get brave enough to change my starting wordβ¦ Awwwβ¦ youβve anthropomorphized your vowels. Are you going to share your combos?
I didnβt start playing until a year in either but I have missed several weeks here and there because I go remote camping off the grid.
Hi there, It has made the game more interesting for me…. but has my monthly solve % creeping up – 3.92 yikes
1/3 of Julys solves have been single-vowel words (9) with (6) having double a letter
I have another 42 on my own, unfinished, list (3 would be adds) and 26 of which begin with an S
doesn’t yet include others on the available list
So fascinating to note similarities & differences in play
My biggest fear, after losing my streak or losing a game, is one of my favorite start words coming on a day when I donβt use it. Specifically, COBRA.
Hey Kim S, hope Iβm replying on the right block. I pay for just InDesign starting this year. Had the whole suite for 6-7 yrs at a teacher rate but Adobe just raised their prices too high and stopped offering me that rate. Only dabbled w Photoshop and Lightroom so itβs was ok. I have a Love-Hate relationship w Adobeβ¦Apple too, lol. And I started when it was Adobe Pagemaker in the 90βs! They were way behind Quark when they were hot but now InDesign I think is the industry standard.
Always bummed when one of my starter words wasnβt played on the day itβs used. The one-guesses are elusive!
Hi Hi! I too started with PageMaker around 1992 when I got my first desktop publishing job, but back then it was Aldus rather than Adobe. Adobe bought them in 1994. From then on I have been an Adobe and Apple person, also in a conflicted relationship. I always had the most current CS versions through my work and regularly used Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Illustrator, InDesign (PageMaker originally), and Acrobat Pro, but when I changed employers and Adobe switched to Creative Cloud, it screwed that up and I haven’t upgraded since. I have toyed with it so many times because I hate not having them on my MacBook (especially Photoshop and InDesign), but every time I crunch the numbers I get irritated and just deal with what I have. π

Welcome to the After Party, SeanH!
Nice to see you back Sean, and nice solve – I haven’t been able to keep my #3 solve rate higher than my #4 in July …. mainly since I went on a single-vowel, no-repeat-consonants theme – to make it more interesting for me….. My solve % is creeping ever higher daily & currently sits at 3.92, “So what” I say (unlike me as I’m usually hugely competitive)
ERROR was a RO-OR/double letter/repeat ?? ‘error’ for me
I lived in Manchester in the late 1990s & loved tripping around the UK from there – don’t think I did encounter a legit peasouper π€
I am not familiar with Yada. We used to say Rhubarb rhubarb.
Canberra was clear at 9 this morning. Brisbane was fogged under.
I used a single vowel starter again.
do you live in Canberra or Brisbane -or just travel ?
I lived in Brisbane before moving to Melbourne – had a stint in the UK – before returning to NZ 1998
I have mostly lived in Canberra for my adult life.
Spent childhood in Perth Darwin and Melbourne. Heard about Brisbane fog on the news.
Cheers
Cool – I got to Darwin while I lived over there – but not to Canberra or Perth
Mothers Day a couple of years ago – I decided to treat myself to a long weekend in Perth – once I looked up the flight details (hours!) and $ – well, that idea just didn’t fly … π
