Thanks JD—this is amazing. My thoughts… 1. I do like your ADDs for the most part. Even the “risqué” ones (though slang or slurs could be a boundary, perhaps?) I don’t believe in leaving out offensive words because they do indeed exist regardless of how I feel about them; 2. I don’t like the idea of -ed verbs because of the sheer number—it wouldn’t be fun to play when a large portion of the words ended in -ed. 3. Adding S, same as 2–I don’t love the idea. *So how will you proceed with this list?

Thanks for taking the time to look at this.
My thought on the “ed” words is that I may just suggest a few of them. Some of them like “naked” and “tired” are not past tense verbs (as you pointed out)
Generally, I agree to avoid many of the “ed” words if they are verbs and the related word is also there (like “moved” and “mover”) which might make the puzzle difficult (to some) to solve.
I have a different version of this list where I rank the words from 1 to 10. I will adjust these rankings (based on feedback from the group). Currently, rank 10 are the 43 words that TB added already; so, the top rated words have a “9” score. I have temporarily ranked “derivative” words (including many of the ed words) as “3”. I may move them most of them down to “1” and a few higher. The words ranked 8 and 9 would be my personal favorites.
What would like to do is put together some kind of online survey and provide a link (if I can somehow do it for free). Then, FF group (and others) can vote on the words.

She learned a new word that day. She’s 33 now and we still laugh about that. 😅

Sounds like someone is trying to butter up TB! 😉 Seriously though, based off of my limited knowledge of the functions of the NYT Games editorial staff, I doubt she has much say over any of the puzzles outside of Wordle. It is my understanding that all the game editors help with the daily crossword, with Shortz having final editing power, but the other puzzles each have their own individual editor that is responsible for that particular game.

I’ve reversed my starters even though later is usually more productive only because it’s a p/u word. And I too could only come up with jetty as a reasonable word but my love of a two vowel word vs a one vowel word always gets more consideration. Plus the j is so rarely used, but especially as a starter! The j is third from the bottom ( not counting the never-used x) whereas the B is third from the top of the list. A no brainer! Not luck, we just figured it out correctly! Ha!

That “J” brings that yellow and green score far down (even when considering the unplayed 2315 words.), but JETTY gets a better green score, because there’s a lot of words left ending in “Y” left to be played more than “E”.

When wordle started, I believe they gave us ALL the rules (they provided the word list, no repeats, no -S or -ED words, etc.). I have kept an apple note with the stats of every game I’ve ever played, best 2nd word choices, used words, significant dates, spreadsheets, etc. and this file helps me play better. I don’t go look online for any hints or help-only what I have created. I am guessing many/most of y’all on this forum have done some & much more of this.
However, now we’re playing wordle without knowing all the rules. For me (and some of you, I have noticed), it’s irritating and making the game not as fun. It makes it less about analyzing, skill and mastery and more of a guessing game (ho-hum).
I wonder if NYT understands that they’re kind of ruining the fun for many of us.

I am one of those nuts who keep a spreadsheet with at least 20 tabs dedicated to Wordle and Quordle.
I don’t think people should do what I do. I make it more like work than fun.

JD I love your 20-tab spreadsheet idea-that is fun for we nuts 🤓. But, I hear you; it is turning into more of a chore since they made the changes. It’s fun to have a challenge that is about strategy not just randomness.
What is a lifetime wordle score? I’ve played 1,563 games and lost 1. My average score is 3.363 – I entered my guess distributions into Brianfalkner.com to get this number. Does this answer your question? Is this how you figure it?

Yes. 3.363 is stellar! It means you score way more 1, 2 and 3’s than 4, 5, and 6’s.
My lifetime average is on the cusp of 3.43 (3.435) right now. It was 3.43 before my 4 with PSHAW.
I also have 1 loss (CATCH).
This is all from memory. I can check tomorrow how many games I’ve played.
My current streak is about 660 games since I crossed the international date line on a trip to Japan. Funny thing about that international date line is that you lose an entire day!
There was another time where I simply just forgot to play that day and the streak ended.
How does Brainfalkner score the loss? I compute it in my spreadsheet. I valued the loss as 7 guesses (which may be a bit presumptuous). So, I just calculated the total number of guesses 1 X days of 1 + 2 X days of 2, …. 6 X days of 6 plus the 7 for the loss and divide by the total number of days played.
I think just about everyone who posts on this site spends too much time on this game.
If you post on FF, NYT should give you a “Wordle Nerd” badge automatically! LOL.
To be honest, I enjoy all the analysis more than even playing the game. I’ve learned a lot about Excel formulae doing this. Is that weird or what?

I had a chance to look at my spreadsheet.
I’ve played 1486 games (including today’s 7/17/26). My average is 3.4347 which rounds to 3.43 (vs 3.44 yesterday). A minor milestone of sorts.
Back in 2022, my average was over 4; so, it’s taken a while to push the average down as I’ve gotten better at this game.
My current “streak” is 1157 games.
My loss was CATCH on puzzle 483. That was 1371 games ago. Since I missed 2 games. My true winning streak would actually be 1369 games.

BTW, I don’t think there’s any hard and fast rules about plurals and ed words. They just don’t happen to select those words. (There are some ed words in the answer list though).
Technically, they could use any 5 letter word they want.
PSHAW is a good example of this.
This rash of REPEATS and ADDs is happening because there are only 513 words left in the original 2309 word answer pool.
Tracy Bennett is on video talking about potentially adding S words and ED words to the pool. (This was before she decided on repeats.)

Yes—you are right. I think it was just a “general rule” that plurals and -ed words were unlikely. Expanding the dictionary is necessary, I just don’t like the way they’re doing it right now, I guess. I doubt I’ll stop playing anyway. What about you

I agree. I don’t like the repeats, but this is mainly because they weren’t repeating up until 2/2/26.
If they were random selections from the entire pool from the beginning and repeats occasionally appeared over time, then that would be the norm and I would actually be OK with it.
I think that’s how they should actually do it when their done with the 2315 list that Josh Wardle provided NYT.
I think the list needs some editing. There are some oddball words on that list too (e.g. ECLAT). I digress.
I would keep playing anyway. I’m becoming an old person, and it’s an old person’s right to complain about things (ok maybe everything)
Depending on what they decide to do, I’ll adjust my strategy accordingly.
Words With Friends has a version of this game called “Guess Word” which I also play. It’s hard, because the entire WWF dictionary is available and they could give a $4%^ about repeats. So, I play that version completely different. I’ve lost that game a few times.

When Josh Wardle sold the game to NYT, there were 2315 words on the answer list.
NYT removed 6 words which left 2309 words.
PSHAW was an ADD to the answer list.
So, it wasn’t originally on it.
PSYCH is not on the 2315 list. It should be. It’s more common than SUEDE (per COCA)
