I was definitely typing up a storm and sporting my curly hair, but not in a classroom. No, it was in the middle of a local shopping mall just beneath the skylight and next to the fountain with all the hustle and bustle of a typical 80s mall. Just imagine a group of nerdy high schoolers typing away on our Selectrics while the cool kids strolled by shouting, “Hey, that chick’s in my typing class!” Such a weird experience.
The mall setting makes it even funnier! It’s like a scene out of Fast Times at Ridgemont High which they ultimately cut.

I am really surprised how many of those were not in the 2315 list.
I know, right?
What’s even more surprising is the number of rare words that were on the 2315 list to begin with.
For example, ECLAT was a word that I was looking at playing on 7/9. I decided on CLEAT instead. This is an anagram of ECLAT.
ECLAT’s COCA score is 37. This is lower than PSHAW which is 70.
Both scores are incredibly low!
By comparison CLEAT’s COCA score is 383.
That’s the number of times its found in a billion words.

Crane, Toils, left 7 possible answers, 4 of which had been used. Pshaw looked like the type of uncommon word that has been used recently. I have seen it in books, probably children’s books about the pioneers. My husband was raised by his grandma who grew up on the Kansas prairie in the late 1800s. I asked him if she ever used the word“Pshaw.” He said she used it often.

All these words start with the letter S.
I considered both SCALP and SLACK as second words.
SLACK gives me slightly better odds at a 3 than SCALP. Retrospectively, I wish I had played SCALP.
So, SLACK ruled out all of these words.
I am left with REPEATs or ADDs.
REPEATs still have higher odds and the only one that worked is ASSAY. A double letter of two letters! Surely, this was it!
Possible ADDs I was considering were HOSTA and UNSAY. I didn’t consider PSHAW at all.
ASSAY at least told me exactly where A and S were and that there were no duplicates.
I had to use a tool to find PSHAW which was the only word that worked.

No S plurals and no repeats? Brilliant limitation and a plainly logical but nice rule by the original creator.
A curated list of words that have more valid guesses than solves? Confusing and not a choice I would make, but understandable in some cases.

This game sucks now but it is what it is. They paid a million dollars for this btw.
If he could have predicted it’s popularity, Josh Wardle should have asked for $10M at least.
NYT has done very little to change this program save the 43 words added to the answer list.
They removed FIBRE because of FIBER and that it was British English, but they left words like LORRY on the answer list. I find that inconsistent.
The first thing they should have done is hire a programmer and encrypt it; so, people couldn’t access the word lists. People can still access the answer list today (if you know what to do.)
When they get to the end of the word list, they should just put all the words on random selection.
They should add a ton of common words and remove all those that are uncommon.
6 letter wordle would be a different game and would require at least one more try (7 or 8?) to finish it. I am not sure I would play it. I have an app where I can play that version of the game.
Words With Friends has a version of regular Wordle, called “Guess Word”, but it is actually hard, because it uses the entire WWF dictionary of 5 letter words (which is huge). I’ve lost in that game many times. At least NYT is limited to 2309 + plus 43 ADDs (for now).

But I would point out that FIBRE and FIBER are the same word with alternate spellings, the US spelling making more sense for NYT to use. LORRY is its own word separate from TRUCK or VAN. So why not keep it.
Were FAVOR and COLOR among the initial 43 added words? FAVOUR and COLOUR would have been too long. … We’ve seen FAVOR, but no COLOR yet.

I’ve always thought after x years (4?) shuffle the entire deck randomly and let everyone know ahead of time. And then keep the original rules.

That is precisely what I’ve been trying to tell people.
You can’t predict the very day that the ADD’s or REPEATs are going to happen.
We think we can predict patterns of things like double letters and particular letters like C’s, U’s or ST’s, but maybe this is actually just random.

An Oscar is only a common noun as a South American aquarium fish. A proper noun as a name or award, a word for O in the phonetic alphabet. I learned that today.

Years ago I had an oscar in my aquarium. Damn thing ate nearly everything else in my tank! I sold him back to the aquarium store. Bad Oscar.
