I deleted the original #1842 you posted and then re-posted. The reason the first one went into moderation is WordPress did not recognize your email as β€œapproved” because of a missing β€œl” in @gmai.com.

You can check the β€œRemember Me Box” and it will store your post name and email in a cookie on your local device. If you use two devices, you have to check the box on both.

    🟩⬜🟩⬜⬜ Slate
    🟩⬜🟩⬜⬜ Shark
    🟩⬜🟩🟩⬜ Scamp
    🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 Swami

Slate led to 12 words not on the PUL. Shark took it down to 4 potential answers: Scamp, Soapy, Spawn, Swami. Scamp ruled in/out each of the 4 words. I reworked it on paper with Raise which got it down to 3 words not on the PUL. Then I tried it with my usual Slate followed by Orcin which would have led to Swami with a score of 3. Buyer’s regret!

If I had gotten out my mechanical pencil and worked this out, I probably would’ve done better. But being exhausted and slightly hungover from yesterday prevented me from exerting the extra effort.

I don’t always understand Wordlebot’s suggestions. For SCRIP it said “This was a good guess; SINUS would have been more efficient. It has a U, which better narrows down the possible solutions, like SQUID or SUSHI.” As it turns out, they’ve both been used, and SINUS repeats theS.

    1. There is a setting in WordleBot that says to score based on past word list. I have it set that way, but I’ve never tested the difference.

I could only find one word after CHOMP, but, scoredle also says SWAMY which is not one of the possibilities according to the WORDLEBOT. After chomp, wordlebot says there’s only one solution left (swami).

If the wordlebot doesn’t count it as a possible word, could SWAMY still become the answer according to the current Wordle rules/practices?

Question: is there a list of acronyms used in this forum somewhere? PU, NU, ADD, etc.

      1. Kim S Avatar

I believe JD just posted some last week. At least I remember him talking about acronyms and initialisms because I responded about it being a pet peeve of mine when people call an initialism an acronym.

        1. I don’t think this is what she was asking about.

She is looking for something on FF to explain the acronyms we are using to describe word lists etc.

          eg

          FF – Five Forks
PU – Previously Used (Words already played)
ADD – Words played that wasn’t on the original answer list.

          etc. etc etc.

          1. Kim S. Avatar

Well, that makes perfect sense now that my head is clear.

          2. Kim S. Avatar

Except, these are just abbreviations, not acronyms. Gotta get the terminology right. πŸ˜‰

        2. You’re right of course.

          My apologies

I will start one if there isn’t.

PU: previously used (it was one of the daily answers.
NU: never used as in, an answer.
ADD: a new word added beyond the original Wordle words but part if the larger subset. JD can describe this more succinctly, I’m sure.

          Thanks for the INFO 😜

        2. See above.

      3. I’m sure we can persuade Jeb to make a glossary of terms somewhere on this site in a handy place.

        @Jeb

        1. Kim S. Avatar

And if he needs any help with the layout, I’d be happy to assist. Thirty years of publication design and editing made me a bit of a snob when it comes to format and layout, if you hadn’t yet noticed. πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸ˜†

    2. Any playable word could conceivably be the answer in theory.

Unplayed words on the 2315 list have the best chance (assuming they play them all)

REPEATS of words played probably have the next best chance.

Finally, common words from the 10657 playable words list have the next best chance. These would be the ADDs.

SWAMY if it even playable (is it?) is very unlikely to be the answer because it’s not the primary spelling of SWAMI which is on the 2315 list.

We went through a similar discussion on EMEER which is subordinate to EMIR and not likely to be the answer for that reason.

    ⬜🟨🟨🟨⬜ RAISE
    🟩⬜🟩🟨⬜ SLAIN
    🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 SWAMI

RAISE leaves only SIGMA, SLAIN, SWAMI and VISTA.

Playing any of the words starting with S leads to the answer; so, I went for SLAIN which contains the tier 2 letters L and N.

    This led to SWAMI.

I am glad that I started with RAISE today

    1. Why doesn’t RAISE also leave SWAIN?

      1. It does, but it’s not a word I’m considering to guess.

  12. LEAST was a genius word Avatar
    LEAST was a genius word

Question for the group. I know words ending in S are allowed but will they ever be the answer?

    1. Plurals and verbs ending in S are never the answer, because it would add a ton of possibilities making the game much more difficult.

I think Wardle didn’t want to make the game too difficult to play; so, most words are solvable in 6. Neither does TB.

Words ending SS, are possible like CLASS and FLOSS.

OASIS was an ADD I believe.

I would have to scan the 2315 list to come up with some other examples.

      1. ABYSS, AMASS, ATLAS, BASIS, BLESS, BLISS, BONUS, BRASS, CHAOS, CHESS, CLASS, CRASS, CRESS, CROSS, DRESS, DROSS, ETHOS, FETUS (banned and played), FICUS, FLOSS, FOCUS, GLASS, GLOSS, GRASS, GROSS, GUESS, HUMUS, LOCUS, LUPUS, MINUS, MUCUS, PRESS, REBUS, TORUS, TRUSS, VIRUS.

I may have missed a couple.

I already mentioned OASIS was an ADD.

You’ll have to look up which ones have been played (and there are many). CHAOS has been played – pretty sure.

Thank you JD. You fully answered my questions. And now I have another list I can reference.

I’m guessing the same must be true for past tense verbs ending in ED or D.
It’s allowable. But won’t be the answer.

          1. You’re welcome.

The subject of β€œED” words came up some time ago.

There are some β€œED” words on the answer list but not a lot.

            There are β€œER” words too.

When I get back to work on Tuesday, I can check those too.

Some of them are of the “BAKER” type (one who bakes) of word.

Interesting list of past tense words. Seems this list could be seen as the exceptions that prove the rule.

8 of the 12 words are past tense forms of 3-letter words ending in Y, with the past tense form being significantly different than the present tense.

1 of the remaining three, BUSED, adds ED.

And the last three that simply have D added to become past tense have double vowels when present tense: CLUE, FREE, KNEE.

These seem like outliers that would not lead to the players constantly falling into pit traps like we would if a whole bunch of past tense (c/v)(v/c)(c)ED words could show up.

            What’s the ADD?

            _ _KED

    1. I’ve identified words like that on the 10657 list, but I think there about 150 words that are even better.

I have them ranked into groups ranked 1 through 10. (This is probably about %8 of the words on this list). I can check back on Tuesday to see where that on ranks.
