I guessed ovate might be related to ovation as in clap.β¨
Closer to egg head.
…and here i was thinking it meant to stir and sip your ovaltine. π
I thought exactly the same thing. I thought it related to OVATION until I looked up related words on AI (see below.)

β¬β¬π¨β¬π© Scone
π©β¬β¬β¬π© OmbrΓ©
π©π©π©π©π© Ovate
Scone led to: Boule, OmbrΓ©, Ovate. I was tempted to go with Ovate but went with OmbrΓ©, which led to Ovate. I think itβs JD who favors Ovate, and I believe a few other members of this group also like this rare word. Am I the only one wondering if Miss Tracy Bennett has secretly joined the Wordle After Party? π€
OMBRE is a fine guess, and it is a 2315 word.
It’s more common than OVATE and ORATE.
If that were an option for me, I would probably gone with that too.

I think she visits this site (purely for research purposes).

I’m on a bad trend of giving in to the potential repeats to quickly. My 3s aren’t going to get 100 over my 4s this way.
It’s been a while since we’ve seen a V though. So there could be another run of V words appearing every couple of days. π

STEAL left 40 possible, but only 7 unused. Of those, I chose MEATY, which was a perfect filter. It left 6 possible, but only OVATE unused.
Nice way to play the game, Sven.
I played STEAL then ORATE. How did you get that OVATE was the only unused base on your choices which did not eliminate the R?

Learned that OXATE is not a word.
I had to check to confirm about OXATE.
Itβs not on the playable words list, MW Dictionary or OED Dictionary.
It definitely sounded like it could be a word though.
It sounds like it should be, but I think oxidize or oxalate would be the proper words depending on the purported meaning.

SANER gave me the same pattern as Wordle 1823.
LIGHT narrowed the unused words to MEATY and OVATE and previously used words to ABATE, ACUTE, & TWEAK.
Five Forks indicated an 87.2% chance of reuse, so each of the two unused words had only a 6.4% chance.
I looked for a word with:
B from abate
C or U from acute
M or Y from meaty
O or V from ovate
W or K from tweak

Yellow cats all over my sun lounger too, Sean!
ORATE isnβt on the 2315 list.
This came as a surprise to me when I discovered that.
Perhaps, it will be an ADD.
OVATE is on the 2315 list however.
OVATEβs COCA score is 14 words per billion.
ORATEβs COCA score is 30 words per billion.
I just discovered that today and was perplexed. Itβs much more common than OVATE.
If I’m speaking honestly, neither ORATE or OVATE are very common.
When do you ever use either of those words in common speech?
It’s the related words that we use.
==================================
I just looked this up using Gemini.
I am shocked that OVATE is related to an egg shape and not an OVATION (applause).
M-W Dictionary backs this up.
You learn something every day!
====================================
Words Related to ORATE
These words all trace back to the Latin orare (to speak, pray, or plead) and os/oris (mouth).
Oration: A formal speech, especially one given on a ceremonial occasion.
Orator: A skilled, eloquent public speaker.
Oratory: The art or practice of formal public speaking.
Oral: Spoken rather than written; relating to the mouth.
Orifice: An opening, hole, or vent (literally “making a mouth”).
Peroration: The concluding part of a speech, typically intended to inspire or summarize.
Inexorable: Unstoppable or unalterable (literally “not to be moved by pleading/praying”).
======================================
Words Related to OVATE
These words stem from the Latin ovum (egg), used to describe egg-like shapes or biological structures.
Oval: An elongated, egg-shaped circle or ellipse.
Ovary / Ovarian: The female reproductive organ that produces eggs.
Oval Office: The famous egg-shaped official office of the President of the United States.
Oviparous: Producing eggs that hatch outside the body (like birds or reptiles).
Ovoid: A three-dimensional egg-shaped object or solid.
Ovulate: The process of releasing an egg from an ovary.
Obovate: A botanical term for a leaf that is egg-shaped, but attached to the stem at the narrower end instead of the wider end.
====================================
BTW, OVOID is an unplayed word on the 2315 list!
I don’t use that one either! (Only, in Scrabble or WWF). LOL.
You’re right, Orate isn’t on the 2315 list – thought I double-checked that before. Neither is Roate and yet it was a great starter for today! Great research and explanation on orate and ovate above, JD.
Funny you say that because I would consider ORATE to be a more commonly pulled word from my peripheral vocabulary. In fact, I specifically remember using it just last week when discussing presidential speeches with my SO. It is also common in crosswords, which I do daily.
On the other hand, I have never had an occasion to use OVATE in conversation or my writings. I have seen it in my plant identification app to describe leaf shapes, but I canβt recall seeing it used anywhere else.
Thatβs why I consider ORATE to be the more common of the two. I suspect a botanist would say otherwise.
Actually, I agree with you.
That’s why I was surprised that OVATE and not ORATE was on the 2315 list, but it is what it is.
I thought Tracy Bennett was brought to the NYT to design the crossword puzzles. At least I think that’s her background.
So, the fact that ORATE makes more appearances in crossword puzzles makes this even more puzzling (no pun intended).
Maybe the “R” in ORATE makes it a better fit in a crossword puzzle, because of “letter frequency”. Since “R” is more common that “V” (by a long shot), it makes easier to find a word to cross it in the other direction.
Speaking of crosswords, I have a prediction to make. ADIEU was an answer in todayβs crossword, which is pretty rare in the standard puzzle (more common in the mini). Iβve noticed correlations between the two puzzles in the past, so I think it might be the Wordle answer soon. I know it would be an add, but it makes sense as one. Iβm probably wrong, but it triggered the thought when I saw it so figured I would share.
You may be right.
Wordle Tools predicted a couple of ADDs.
I always thought ADIOS might precede ADIEU though
You’re welcome.
ROATE is a great starter. It might not be the best starter anymore. I will discuss in an upcoming post.
ROATE has ZERO chance of being the answer in ONE guess.
It’s actually an obsolete variant of “ROTE” (per MW Dictionary).
