I used your filter tool today Jeb, and it was very helpful! Thank you 😊

I filtered for ?i?en and there were a lot of used word I was able to eliminate to make a correct guess and score a three.

    1. The filter is working great for me, too. I wonder if the original Search button is needed for any reason?

Initially it came down to liken or liven. The K was more commonly used than the V on my list so went with the numbers. Then I discovered limon limen, which I’d never heard of before. Would have been a statistically superior choice, but sketchy, verbally speaking…

    1. Jack klotz Avatar
      Jack klotz

Correction, limen, not limon. No coffee yet!

      1. Strike edit.

    2. Wasn’t “limon” the thing they were supposed to put in Sprite soda? LOL.

A cross between a “lemon” and a “lime”.

“limen” is a very rare word indeed. Per Merriam Webster, it’s a threshold or doorway. The COCA raw score is only 7. It’s only used 7 times per BILLION words. (One of those was a misspelling of linemen!) LOL.

I would have gone for the “K” over the “V” for the same reason as you, but “K” is not that much more common than “V” only slightly more.

      1. Jack klotz Avatar
        Jack klotz

Indeed, the k is #21 and v is #22 on my list of commoness. Could flip a coin at that point. I was thinking the same thing about limon and sprite! Also, I’ve seen it as a flavor of potatoe chips? Hmm. Nice solve in two, BTW! Can never get too many of those, for sure! But 3 in a row? That’s crazy good! I average one a month because I’m too focused on keeping my streak alive. I need a minimum of 3 letters with one in proper placement to venture a guess in two. If I screw up I’m lucky to save it in five!

        1. I have K and V in the same tier as F and W.

          (1) [E]
          (2) [A,R]
          (3) [O,T,L]
          (4) [I, S, N]
          (5) [C, U]
          (6) [Y, D, H, P]
          (7) [M, G, B]
          (8) [F, K, W, V]
          (9) [Z, X, Q, J]

          Thanks!

My overall strategy is to get it in 3 (with a chance to get it in 2).

I pick the best word on the list that shares as many letters as the words I think are remaining on the list.

If there are no good common words, then I go for the burner word (but, that’s rare).

I don’t play in hard mode, but most days I probably could.

I also thought β€œCould this possibly be a 3-peat of Linen?” No, Ms. Bennett would not do that to her loyal fans!

Some of us are big fans. One of my friends and I admire Ms. Bennett’s skills and we enjoy reading her rare interviews in the press. I think I would enjoy chatting with her over a cup of tea or coffee. As we know, she tries to avoid words that could be offensive or controversial and she keeps a low profile. However, there is a brief 2022 TV interview with her on youtube. Just search: Interview Tracy Bennett Wordle Editor.

        1. That was partly in jest.

I have seen the Today Show interview and actually posted it on this site.

Is that the one you meant?

          1. Elaine Avatar

            Yes, that’s the one!

        2. Elaine,
Thanks for this link. I am also a fan of Ms. Bennett and I’ve tried to read everything I can about her. I was astounded by the hostility in the comments when she was first selected as editor. These were in articles that appeared in NYT. I would have attributed some of it to misogyny if I had not already seen even more hostility expressed toward Sam Ezersky, editor of Spelling Bee. But I guess there’s a lot of that going around nowadays 😬.

Can someone remind me: is there likely to be an answer for a verb that ends in β€œD”? I believe the plural S with a noun will not be.

    1. I saw, heard or read that proper names, plurals and past tense were NoNos

    2. But present tense verbs can end in D. These are all PU:

BUILD DREAD EMBED GRIND KNEAD PLEAD SCALD SPEND YIELD

This is an odd rule breaker:

      UNDID 1486 07/14/25

    3. I think words ending in “ED” (especially past tense verbs) is the case that is rare, but there are some in the 2315 list. I’ll scan it to see if I can find some examples.

    4. There are a lot more “ED” words than I thought!

      BUSED (past tense)
      CLUED (past tense)
      CRIED (past tense)
      DRIED (past tense)
      FREED (past tense)
      FRIED (966) (past tense)
      KNEED (past tense)
      PLIED (past tense)
      PRIED (past tense)
      SHIED (past tense)
      SHRED (1712) (past tense)
      SPIED (past tense)
      TRIED (past tense)

      Other words
      —————
      ABLED (adj)
      BLEED (74) (verb)
      BREED (1024) (noun, verb)
      CREED (noun)
      EMBED (1695) (verb)
      GREED (1359) (noun)
      SPEED (1651) (noun)
      STEED (125) (noun)
      TWEED (121) (noun)
      UNFED (36) (adj)
      UNWED (adj)

Now, whether they’ve secretly removed the first words from the 2315 list without telling anyone is up to them. They don’t have to tell us about all the words they’ve added or removed from the solution list.
