β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬Stare
β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬ Colin
π¨π©β¬β¬β¬ Fudge
π©π©π©π©π© PuffyFor my first 2 guesses I use the most common 10 letters in Wordle answers. When those had no hits, I was thinking βOh, fudge!β I came up with 5 unused words as possible answers. I finally figured out that FUDGE could be a burner to rule in/out the 5 possible answers that were not Repeats.

Wordle 1,779 4/6
β¬β¬β¬β¬β¬ Saner
β¬β¬β¬β¬π© Hotly
β¬π©β¬π¨π© Dumpy
π©π©π©π©π© PuffyWhen SANER is all gray, the Word Finder site says the next set of likely letters are O Y I T L, so I tested HOTLY.
With a green Y in HOTLY, the next set of likely letters are U D M P I, so I tested DUMPY.
Then the Word Finder site indicated only words that start with P.
I searched the GitHub wordle_words.txt page for space PU. The PU??Y words on that page are PUDGY PUFFY PULPY PUPPY PUSHY PUTTY.
PUDGY, PUSHY, PUTTY have eliminated letters. The yellow block eliminated PULPY and PUPPY. That left only PUFFY.

-
Just realised pully is not a word (was thinking of pulley). What a fail haha
-
And yes, pully is a word Violet – I was debating the spelling with e too, but knew it would be rejected if incorrect…. so went for it
pretty tricky today for sure!
keen to see others posts-
According to Merriam Webster, βPULLYβ is not a word, but clearly on the playable words list.
I think it makes it on the list as itβs on old spelling of βpulleyβ
I open this puzzle with ROATE which isnβt a word either. Itβs a version of ROTE.
PULLY is not likely to ever be the answer to this puzzle.
-
-
Wordle has about 12,000 words it will allow you to guess, otherwise it “shakes you off.” Under 3,000 are answers.
So it does some spelling protection.
-
According to the programmers (who build the Wordle help apps/solvers)
12,972 to be precise
2315 original answers PLUS
10,657 playable wordsThe only thing Iβm not sure of is whether the 6 banned words are actually playable.
-
Yes the banned words are still playable (just checked) and the list of playable words is extensive (eg FUBAR is playable), along with some words that look like spelling mistakes π
-
Thanks Mark!
I did find FUBAR on the playable word list.
I don’t doubt that many of these words are simply misspelled (like PULLY could be one of them).
The only reference that I found that might make that word valid was on dictionary.com which listed it as a “Middle English” spelling of the word.
So, maybe, in the time of Shakespeare, this word was valid.

-
Question for Violet and all: if Pully is not a word why did WORDLE allow it?
-
It’s allowed simply because PULLY is on the playable words list.
It doesn’t mean that Josh Wardle, his partner or NYT (Tracy Bennett) have done the due diligence required to actually check to see if these are actually words in the English language.
So, I think they’ve been a bit lazy.
Similar things happen in Scrabble and Words With Friends, but it might be design.
In those games “ZA” is a word on the word list, but it is clearly a slang word for “PIZZA” (which is a Wordle word, obviously)
I think they allow “ZA”, because there is no other 2 letter word you could make with a “Z” otherwise. Although, I think that they should allow “ZO” (which is allowed as “ZHO” and “DZHO” in the game) rather than “ZA”.
In the game play, whatever they chose to be a word on their list is playable.
Official dictionaries do not dictate the word lists.
-
Thanks, JD. That makes sense. So itβs a limited set of words as determined by Johnβs girlfriend and perhaps the NY Times editor(s).
PS that always bugs me about Scrabble.
-
-
So, I just looked up “PULLY” in the “OED” (Oxford English Dictionary). Apparently, it’s also short for “Pullover” (Sweater), but it’s only used in British-English. It appears to be a slang term for it.
It sounds very English. It’s like a “Yorky” for a Yorkshire Terrier.
My grandmother was alarmed many years ago that I didn’t know what a “Yorky” was 35 years ago. (Yes, we’re English). LOL.

John Wardle’s girlfriend did most of the original list editing, so she may have filtered out SS as an answer. I just tested, and it was allowed as a guess. So was KITTY.
Neither word is on the past answers list, although EfficientKitty is on the Coffee Wall of Fame.
Meow. πΊ
