Wordle 1,770 2/6
⬜🟩⬜⬜🟩 FREAK
🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 DRUNKMy first time ever guessing in just 2. For a while I tried to reference previous words but felt like too much effort. Now I just guess – it seems more fun.

Yay – its so exciting getting a 2
next best thing to the elusive 1

Don’t ask me why I use COBRA so often as my start word. It’s not very good, I know, but for some reason I just like it. I am also afraid it will come up one day and if I miss it I’ll be really irritated with myself.

Will you change your start word after COBRA is the answer?
It’s not awful.
The only low tier letter there is probably the “B”. (I list it in tier 4.)
“C” and “O” are in good positions.
-
Yes, I probably will. I have multiple start words that I alternate through depending on recent answers and just my mood. None of them are PUs. I still like to try to up my Wordle in 1 badge which is currently at 15. COBRA has been my favorite for at least a year and a half and was my most used last year. I know it’s not awful, but it’s uncommon and lacks the biggies T, S, L , and E.

Wordle 1,770 4/6
⬜🟩⬜🟩⬜ CRANE
⬜⬜⬜⬜⬜ TOILS
⬜🟩🟩🟩⬜WRUNG
🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 DRUNK
I got it down to WRUNG or DRUNK. WRUNG was a previous answer in 2021. I thought it might be a Repeat answer so I took a chance on it. I should have gone with DRUNK which was not previously used. Ms. Bennett has used only 2 repeats so far in April. -

(1) ROATE
(2) LYRIC
(3) DRUNKOn (3), I had the choice between DRUNK and SPURN.
I supposed if I went with ORATE, I would have had only one choice.
I figured since it is Friday, I would go with DRUNK as people are more apt to go out drinking on a Friday night.
Planned event or just coincidence? You decide.

My brother Eric said I can share his sequence here. He plays in hard mode:
Quiet
Ummah
Croup
Grund
DrunkWe looked up grund and learned that it’s a German word. Eric said, “Wordle cheats!”
Is this a known issue?
-
Scrabble word finder says ” not a word,” so I wouldn’t have tried it. GRUND FRUNK RLRD? Sounds drunk to me!
-
I don’t know how Wordle itself can “cheat”.
There’s a list of words. One of them is the answer. You guess words until you find the word they picked.
Sometimes they pick an obscure word for the answer like LORIS or KNELL (both ADD’s by Tracy Bennett.) or SUMAC which was put there by Josh Wardle.
But, I wouldn’t consider it “cheating”. Maybe, they just want to make it more challenging on a particular day.
Do they want us to win every day? Does that indicate that the game is too easy? I’ve met people who stopped playing Wordle, because they thought it was too easy.
DRUNK wouldn’t fall into that category anyway.
Maybe you can get Eric to explain how he thinks it cheats.
-
UMMAH and GRUND? Wordle isn’t the problem here. I also play in hard mode, my sequence today:
SAUCE
MOUND
DRUNK

Wordle 1,770 3/6
⬛⬛⬛⬛🟨 LATER
⬛⬛⬛⬛🟨 SCION
🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 DRUNKWas a tossup between runny and drunk. Runny lost out due to the double N’s. I add a penalty of ten points for every doubled letter giving it a score of 9 for being 9th most commonly used plus the 10 penalty and 14 for the Y in 14th place for a total of 33. Drunk scored 13 for the D and 21 for the K totaling 34. I then looked at my starter letter list and saw the R is one notch above the D. From this I concluded runny was better than drunk because like golf, the lower the number the better the chance of winning. After all that, I used my gut feeling and went with drunk. All my stats said runny was the better word! If we use our intuition, we CAN survive AI! HA!
-
Wow. I’m impressed with your system. What do you use to keep track?
-
I love that after going through all of that elaborate scoring system you ended up just going with your gut instinct.
Also RUNNY and DRUNK are a pretty funny pair of words.
-
I am curious about this “scoring system”. Is this published anywhere? Maybe, I could use this.
My system involves trying to guess words based on the pattern that ROATE leaves (mostly words that could be the answer; so, I can get it in 2 occasionally.) With ROATE, I recognize that I’ll NEVER get it in 1.
The 2nd word I pick is based on the number of words remaining that contain the letters that I chose.
For this one, the most commonly occurring letters in the words that remained were U, I, Y, C, L (in that order). So, that’s why went with LYRIC.
-
I began as most through trial & error until I realized it is mostly statistics, with an infusion of instinct and common usage. At times I ask myself when was the last time I used or heard used a certain word. I compiled a daily list which I still keep of played words well before discovering the burned list. I figured out two of three 4 letter words contain two vowels, so I concluded to use the four most common vowels leaving the U as a possible or process of elimination like today’s solve. I saved valuable real-estate not using the U early. What that distilled down to is the best starters are the three most common consonants with the two commonest vowels. The R,T and R come in at 1,2,&3 with the E&A commonest vowels. My second word is a set of five new letters again using the most common. S,C&N with the I&O. This effectively knocks out the top ten and my third subset are H,Y,D,P,M while keeping the U in the wings. I assign points to letters not common to any solves based on their placement and the lowest total should be the answer. Should. Today the only letters counted were the d&k and the r&n. The u was presumed for both as well as one n and the r. Hope this makes sense…
-
Fascinating, but complicated.
Do you think you can explain it in a formalized way that others can use it?
It seems to work well for you.
-
God, I hate auto correct! Should have read “two out of three FIVE letter words” and “The R, T,& L.” The S is by far the best starter letter followed by the C and oddly, the B which is #17 overall usage, is #3 as a starter letter. Go figure!

I like using adieu because it eliminates the vowel it is a vowel in the word. It works for me.

Love your idea using ADIEU. Great tip.

⬜⬜⬜⬜🟨 Safer

🟨⬜⬜⬜⬜ Kitab
🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 DrunkSomewhere along the way, I had a feeling the word might be drunk, but I kept using throw-away words to narrow down the consonants.
Thanks to the word finder on the Miriam Webster site for my 2nd and 3rd words. It’s a good way to learn new words!
-
Interesting, but, you know the answers tend to be more common words.
Without checking, I can tell you that ONIUM and KITAB are not on the 2315 list of predetermined answers.
Still, it’s cool to learn new words.
I can play them in Words With Friends probably.
I am learning a few myself by studying the 10,657 playable words list.
I am looking for likely ADD candidates.

Wow!
Do you have to have a NYT account to use the bot more than once?
I used it once and haven’t been able to use it since then.
-
I do not have a paid account. When I’m curious about stats (usually short games) I start an Incognito (Private) browser window and NYT lets me play and use WordleBot for the day for free. I just re-load my answers. Since no cookie gets stored, it works anytime.

I’m curious. What does the giraffe statement mean?
-
I’ll tell you, Ruth. … But there may be no going back. 😁
It’s my title for the ‘picture’ of my Wordle.
-
Short sheeting is a trick you play on someone by folding up the foot of their top sheet half way, so when they get in, their feet get stopped.
Giraffes being so tall can never find long enough sheets. (Ha ha.)
-
My sister used to short sheet my bed EVERY April Fools. I always fell for it. 🤦🏻♀️

Glad it worked out!
Though I think DOILY would have eliminated more words today, and might still be the better second guess for a blank on LEAST.
