OMBRE is a fine guess, and it is a 2315 word.
It’s more common than OVATE and ORATE.

Instinct/ESP led me to MATED even though I knew I should include an R. Thought of PRATE which led me to ORATE. Thought I nailed it until I didn’t 😉
Learned that OXATE is not a word.
I had to check to confirm about OXATE.
It’s not on the playable words list, MW Dictionary or OED Dictionary.
It definitely sounded like it could be a word though.
It sounds like it should be, but I think oxidize or oxalate would be the proper words depending on the purported meaning.

SANER gave me the same pattern as Wordle 1823.
LIGHT narrowed the unused words to MEATY and OVATE and previously used words to ABATE, ACUTE, & TWEAK.
Five Forks indicated an 87.2% chance of reuse, so each of the two unused words had only a 6.4% chance.
I looked for a word with:

ORATE isn’t on the 2315 list.
This came as a surprise to me when I discovered that.
Perhaps, it will be an ADD.
OVATE is on the 2315 list however.
OVATE’s COCA score is 14 words per billion.
ORATE’s COCA score is 30 words per billion.
I just discovered that today and was perplexed. It’s much more common than OVATE.
If I’m speaking honestly, neither ORATE or OVATE are very common.

You’re right, Orate isn’t on the 2315 list – thought I double-checked that before. Neither is Roate and yet it was a great starter for today! Great research and explanation on orate and ovate above, JD.
Funny you say that because I would consider ORATE to be a more commonly pulled word from my peripheral vocabulary. In fact, I specifically remember using it just last week when discussing presidential speeches with my SO. It is also common in crosswords, which I do daily.
On the other hand, I have never had an occasion to use OVATE in conversation or my writings. I have seen it in my plant identification app to describe leaf shapes, but I can’t recall seeing it used anywhere else.
That’s why I consider ORATE to be the more common of the two. I suspect a botanist would say otherwise.

I thought Tracy Bennett was brought to the NYT to design the crossword puzzles. At least I think that’s her background.
So, the fact that ORATE makes more appearances in crossword puzzles makes this even more puzzling (no pun intended).
Maybe the “R” in ORATE makes it a better fit in a crossword puzzle, because of “letter frequency”. Since “R” is more common that “V” (by a long shot), it makes easier to find a word to cross it in the other direction.
Speaking of crosswords, I have a prediction to make. ADIEU was an answer in today’s crossword, which is pretty rare in the standard puzzle (more common in the mini). I’ve noticed correlations between the two puzzles in the past, so I think it might be the Wordle answer soon. I know it would be an add, but it makes sense as one. I’m probably wrong, but it triggered the thought when I saw it so figured I would share.
