2025 and older feedback here.
Thanks for the comments!

Still would like the by date list. Helps me visualize trends.
Faith,
There is the Alpha and Chron list. The Chron list is by date. Are you saying make sure I keep that (I will) or are you asking for something different?
Jeb
It was my font size. For whatever reason, when the search was added, the chron list no longer fit on the screen (125%). I decreased the font size to 100% and the chron list reappeared. Nothing else neeeded. Thanks for the quick response!
Oh good. With the new red “@” markers for repeats, I as tweaking the list’s design to make the most of the width on phone. Sounds like I over tweaked for 125% view on what is called “stacking” the two lists. I’m thinking maybe the two lists should never stack and people know how to increase / decrease view. I’ll keep that in mind. Thanks for the feedback Faith!
Faith,
I had other complaints, so I tweaked to allow a phone browser be set to zoom up to 125% and the columns will stay side-by-side. I’m guessing some of us (like me) don’t have the best eyesight and depend on browser zoom. I depend on it more on my Mac than my iPhone. Hope that helps!
Hello! To facilitate searching for reused words, perhaps you could make the 2 superscript unique, like 2*, or 2+, etc. Thanks!
Paul, I’m not following. Can you describe the goal of having unique superscripts? What is the goal there? — Jeb
Oh, I get it now. Great idea! Maybe I should switch to @ (which is above 2 on a keyboard) and if we ever get a triple use a # which is over a 3 on the keyboard. Going into the labs….
Paul: Swapped out 2’s for @’s so all repeat words can be found with the search button. Thanks for the idea!
How about @ followed by the repeat number, e.g., “@2”? Then we could have our searchable cake and eat it, too.
I’ll cross that bridge when/if we get there. Could be 5 years away when we get a triple.
Jeb,
Have you noticed the pattern?
Every 4 days its either a new or repeated word.
SHRED was an added word.
I expect either a repeat or an add on March 1st if she maintains this pattern.
JD
I don’t monitor or even know how to identify added words, the candidate pool, or the answer pool. Does it involve looking under the hood at the code? This site is about publishing past experienced answers (through yesterday, not today.) “No spoilers” is one of the key search phrases I get from search engines. So I don’t strive to publish either the remainder answer pool or the larger remainder candidate pool (words that won’t shake.) Noticing patterns on the past answers list seems fair, like so far, only year one repeats.
PS
Thanks for waiting until today to talk about yesterday’s answer. 😉
You’re welcome. No one likes a spoiler.
The original list of Josh Wardle’s 2315 words for Wordle can be found here.
Just cut and paste.
I took that list and subtracted the words on your list (thank you, BTW) and created an “unplayed” word list which I maintain.
You’ll notice that “SHRED” (1712) and “MOOCH” (1700) aren’t on the 2315 list.
Mix in “SQUAD” (1704) and “AWAKE” (1708) and you can see the every 4 day pattern I spoke of.
I should note that they removed 5 words LYNCH, WENCH, PUPAL, SLAVE and FIBRE. AND FETUS (unsuccessfully) because it appeared in some puzzles. So sometimes it’s referred to some as a 2309 word list.
I was very surprised that SHRED wasn’t on the original list! Which meant it wasn’t in three options given on at least one other website.
Me too. I checked the list about 4 times.
I went:
ROATE
WIDER (I usually guess CRIED and I wish I had this time.)
CREED
SHRED (after ruling out CREED and FREED)
It could have also been DURED, GYRED, LURED, MURED theoretically, but these are all past tense words.
That original list on GitHub is not something players were intended to use in play, so I do not want to build it into this site. It in effect contains future information.
The past list on the other hand is an output of playing. There is a line I’m trying to maintain
Hi Jeb, I don’t expect you to post any version of the 2315 list. The purpose of this exercise is to try and predict the trend of repeated words. I have (and fairly accurately I might add) achieved this by analyzing the trend of “added” words.
I know you’re not interested in the “added” words, but it indicates when the NYT has edited the original list. I believe when NYT acquired Wordle from Josh Wardle, they just took the entire program without changing it and they had to start from his word list. Then they just edit the word list.
Having said that, we have really no idea how much they’ve edited the entire list. At this point, it could look completely different now.
Since they’re down to about 625 words off the original list, they have to do something to the list to make the game more competitive. They’ve played %73 of those words (if they are still there). So, the rate of both “added” and “repeated” have both increased equally. Otherwise, they will start running out of words and the game becomes too easy.
The 2315 word list that Wardle created is simply a list of the most common 5 letter words. Anyone could come up with a similar list of words.
No one has hacked into the Java code here. Although, I think that has been done. If you know the answer, what fun is that?
Thanks for the background. A clarification on the 2315 word list, you are right that “common” is subjective. My understanding is Josh had his girlfriend who was second-language English, go through the list and pick words she recognized. Not a bad tactic, but you are right, the important decision was to use common words to create the most fun for the most people. He said he wanted to avoid frustration for players.
But that 2315 word list isn’t anything I’ve ever incorporated on the site because, at least at first, it contained future answer information.
I appreciate your help and support with keeping Wordle fun!
No problem. Thanks again for all the hard work you do to keep this list up to date.
Bookend Battle News!
I like to watch for new first or last letter words joining the list. After holding the “last B” position for a long time we have a new bookend:
BURNT 1494
BUTCH 325a
BUYER 1711 🏆
BUYER beats BUTCH who has held the last B position since year 1. The “a” means it was one of the early NYT edits causing people to see two different answers on the same day. BUTCH was the original word (a) and was removed for [reasons.]
Search is great! Thank you. Saved a lot of scrolling 😀
I’m liking using it too! Really helps to quickly get to the CHRON list date to see how old a guess is, which apparently matters with re-use rules (so far.)
Today’s answer does not appear in the word tips word finder collection of nyt answers. Is wordle expanding its list?
I ran late on updating by 3 hours. I normally schedule the updates for 6 a.m. ET. to allow for players in Hawaii to finish “yesterday”. Last time zone to play. So yesterday’s answer does not appear for the full day “today” depending on your timezone. But you did catch me napping! (Actually coding.) Thanks Rob!
Love the Search feature and love this site!
Thank you so much for the new feed back button, love it!
Did you mean “search” button? That is just like something I would do… notice the new search button, go to feedback and type feedback instead of search! 😉 Either way, you are welcome Diane!
Thanks for the search button, brilliant!
Please explain the reason for the ⬆️ and ⬇️ buttons.
You are welcome VeeDub! The up / down arrows will go to the next or previous *if* 2 or more are found. Good way to get to the date on the chron list since dates (age) of repeats seem to be important. TBD. I’ll look at hiding the up/down buttons until at least 2 or more are found.
Search is a great feature – thank you! I used to do User and QA testing so I ran a few special case scenarios based on the forms of data that appear on your wonderfully helpful page.
No real issues found but am reporting what I tested:
01 search all-alpha entry – 100% returned all occurrences accurately.
02 search all-numeric entry – 100% returned all matching occurrences accurately. Note that matches may include portions of dates, technically an accurate match, but possibly not a useful match. Also note that search only for the superscript 2 was not successful, but I admit to being lazy and not copying a super2 elsewhere for the purpose of pasting it into the search box. Super2 occurrences are returned when searching with 2.
03 search date entry – 100% returned all matching occurrences accurately.
04 search alpha-numeric entry – 100% accurately returned NOT FOUND.
05 up / down locators – 100% accurately returned next or previous occurrences if they exist
06 x for exit – 100% accurately closed search function – note that some users may expect the x to clear the contents of the box.
General observations:
– search box allows more than 5 characters because it is a Good Boy and over-achiever.
– the question mark may be a wee bit confusing, as it suggests a wild card but is not actually a function.
– search box happily permits backspace and delete, as well as double-tap to highlight
I love this new feature!
Well BarbA, you are obviously a PRO! And I’ve known some pros in Test / Q.A. I need to send YOU coffee!
I had not considered all the use cases you came up with. Looking for repeats with the superscript 2 is a good one. It is really just a “2” but there are lots of 2’s on the page, so that might be a good special search to include. I’ve also considered keeping up a subset of “repeats only” farther down the page.
Yeah, the ? is wonky. It started off as “Search:” but was taking up too much room. I think I’ll just remove it.
Fantastic feedback! Thank you!
You’re welcome, Jeb! I used to do user/qa testing for work with focus on mobile and laptop users, stand-alone apps plus browser mount. Fun for me to do this, and nice to be able to say thanks to you. You have made Wordle more fun!
Barb
I love the new green search button.
Thanks!
You are welcome Maya! It’s been a long time coming, but more important than ever with repeats happening. Grok A.I. helped!
Search button works great. Thanks!
You are welcome Mike!
On Saturday Feb 21/26 the word “Awake” was the wordle answer but when looking at the block list it was already there and seemingly had been used already. Please check to confirm that it has been used twice and should have been coloured yellow
Thanks. M.R.
The word AWAKE has been used twice. But the list is only past answers through yesterday. So the list does not “know” today’s answer, and can’t highlight or flag the repeat. Doing that would be spoil-ish.
Is there a list that contains the past words in alpha order that include the date used?
Ann, I can see where date checking is going to be more useful. I’ll see if there is room. I’m just doing a page search twice for now. Also looking for old words #365 (first year) or less, but no idea if that will hold up.
I love the list and have used it many times. I’ve been playing wordle every day since #216. I am no fan of NYT reuse of words.
Ann,
I’ve added a new page search button which will help get to both alpha and chron listings of the searched word. Still fine tuning.
Reusing Wordle words of past answers on five forks list nearly makes the list moot. It wastes my time to guess which word on the list you’re going to reuse.
The list is still proving useful for many of us, but requires some changes in tactics. For example “recent” words should not repeat but “old” words are. Dividing line TBD. See the LIST TIPS link at the top of the list. I’ll be adding a 4th tip later today.
Actually, it is still useful, because NYT has not abandoned playing unplayed words. They are almost 3/4 of the way through the original list and added 32 words. They have now repeated 3 words in about 16 days. That’s one repeat about every 8 days (worst case!) I expect there to be a long gap before the next repeat (at least 20 days).
Since they are 3/4 of the way through the list, and they abandoned the idea of playing the unplayed on Wardle’s original list plus new unplayed words. They would be repeating words %75 of the time! So, in a given week, you would see 5 repeats and 2 unplayed words.
That’s not what’s happening now.
So, since the odds favor heavily unplayed words (%80-90), you should play it as if NYT is not going to repeat as Jeb suggests in his tips.
Also, favoring the early repeats is a tip that is working if you have ruled out the ones that haven’t.
I tend to play “intersection” words. This means words that share as many letters with the outstanding unplayed words as possible. So, if you want to mix in early repeats with unplayed words that you can think of and guess based on that, that makes sense.
Had my first six-guess puzzle in quite some time. I’ve relied on the idea that repeat words will be rare, but I’ll change my process now—my first two guesses will eliminate letters.
I like the freedom of start variety your tactic has, Meg.
I decided to do a random start with RASIN today. Wordle shook at me. :-O
Disappointed they chose to reuse words. Took me 6 goes today as I didn’t realise the repeating had begun.
I hit 1000 days played tomorrow so I’m calling it a day. Thanks for killing the game.
NYT did not do a good job of announcing the change. They did it in a newsletter, and it created a buzz on Reddit, but why didn’t they announce it at the top of the puzzle play space in advance and keep it up for a couple of months?
The way the game is designed (roughly a 3,000 words of common answers) they had to start shuffling the deck at some point or expand into harder words.
Still having fun playing, just changing my tactics.
Not reusing Wordles was never a stated rule but what‘d Josh think? Here’s what AI ‘replied’ when I “asked”: “Based on available reports, Josh Wardle’s original intent for Wordle was for it to be a non-repeating, once-daily word game. The original game was designed with a fixed, 2,315-word list intended to be played in sequence without any repeats.” A bit further in the reply is: “In summary, while the initial, strict, non-repeating format was part of Wardle’s original vision, the evolution to reusing words is a necessary practical change implemented by the New York Times to allow the game to continue.”
FWIW my view is that the previous sentence should have concluded with “…to continue to make money for the NYT.”
To respect Wardle’s initial intent the NYT could have at least avoided reuse until his original 2,315 word list was completed. I guess they figured that would negatively affect their profit. Coincidentally, today was my 1,500th Wordle and I have a long streak going…but I’m sufficiently annoyed at the NYT (despite my belief in free enterprise) to make it my last. (Full disclosure: I kept and used a list comprised only of Wordles I completed and did not feel it was cheating since I put in the work to solve and track. This was key in my strategy and ‘reuse’ largely compromises it.)
A final stray thought: How long will it be until they reuse a Wordle in a third puzzle?
Because they want to stay with a limited set of “common” words (subjected) they had to reuse words at some point. I agree with your idea of just shuffle the deck at some point (and announce it in advance better.)
It appears they are sliding in old words in chunks, so I guess that is another way to shuffle. It was not announced well, though.
re: “Repeat #3: I’m ready for it. Red superscript 3!
Today is February 21st 2026 and I’m wondering why awake is on your previously used list when that was the Wordle word for today?
Thanks for your question. AWAKE was one of the first 3 repeat words. Since the list is past answers through yesterday, it can’t signal today’s answer is a repeat. It doesn’t “know” yesterday until tomorrow. It would require me to play a day in advance to go get the future.
See the LIST TIPS link at the top of the list for the evolving way to use the past list during play.
Not as enticing as before , may abort
duplicates are boring
Few, if any of us, would have played the “old” words repeated so far. The game started with friends and family. After 5 months, there were only 90 people playing. It started to take off December 2021, and NYT acquired soon after that.
Why is she reusing words? I feel this violates the whole game.
They have to either start reusing words or shuffle the entire deck, because the “deck” of answers is limited to about 3,000 common words. Common is subjective, but a key part of the design. I’ve never been able to rely on (my) memory to play the game. The reason I started the list!
If it weren’t for previously used words, I would have had it in 2 guesses today. Ugh.
P.S. I love your list!
When I saw two of my guesses today were from the first week of Wordle, I just had to try both. Worked out, but still took 4. Thanks for the feedback Laura!
Today was a repeat! Used on xx/xx/xx21
No spoiler. But is this the end of the usefulness of this list?
The list is proving useful in that the words being re-used are older, so you can take that into account. Also repeat words are being flagged with a red “2”. Take a look at the “LIST TIPS” link at the top of the list for more info. Thanks for the feedback Bettie!
List shows the word for today 2/21/26, as being used as the #4 word several years ago so that must be incorrect.
Brandon: The Five Forks Wordle list is correct. It records the past through yesterday. (No spoiler info.) NYT announced they would start repeating words beginning with Feb 2 (Grounds Hog Day). Older words so far. See the “LIST TIPS” link at the top of list page on how this changes using the list. It’s evolving, so watch for updates.
Thanks for the feedback!
Yet another PU word. NYT has really turned Wordle into a joke by allowing PU words. I guess my strategy going forward will be if I begin to suspect, as I did today, that a PU word is in play I’ll look back to see how long ago it was used. Thanks Jeb for continuing to publish the finest PU list there is. I wish I could figure out why NYT decided to reuse words when there are literally thousands of perfectly good non-PU words out there.
There are two lists: 1) allowed guesses (about 12,000) and 2) allowed answers (about 3,000). The constraint is #2 “common” words with a goal of keeping play largely within 6 guesses. That’s subjective, but as designed, it means words have to be re-used at some point.
The editor did state older words will be recycled first and your strategy is on the “LIST TIPS” you’ll find linked at the top.
Thanks Lane!
So, this is how I play and how I’ve played ever since I discovered five forks! 🙏
I use the FIRST random word that comes into my head as long as it hasn’t been used before (I check FF) and sometimes that works out for me really well and sometimes it doesn’t. Then I find a word that fits and check if it has or hasn’t been used. Of course with the new system I have to consider using a word that has appeared already and then make a judgement call.
I thought that the introduction of repeat words would completely ruin the experience. I also share my Wordle with a few friends and family every day.
So thank you, Jeb for continuing to put this amazing list together. I’m still enjoying it as much as ever and I am 6 days off a 500 day streak!
I agree completely with you. NYT has ruined the game by allowing words to be reused. I wish I could figure out why they did that when there are literally thousands of perfectly good new words out there.
I’m enjoying the new way of playing, but it has been a change. Today 3 of my 4 guesses were on the list, but I really wanted to use them, and they were all old. It worked out!
I like your random first guess play. I’ve heard others who borrow a word from something that has happened to them in the past 24 hours. I don’t like to use the same starter ever day either, but I think I’ll expand my list.
The feedback is becoming interesting reading!
NYT created a buzz with the repeats for sure!
BTW, I bet Tracy Bennett knows about this list. This is partly why the repeats are happening. She is starting to notice that people are using this to their advantage and gaining an “edge” over the typical Wordle player.
I was getting most puzzles in 3 prior to the repeats.
As they approach the end of the 2315 Wardle list, we would be getting the puzzles in 2 (a lot). This is why she feels the need to make the game more challenging.
If you ever play the “Words With Friends” version of this game, it unlocks the complete dictionary of 5 letter words (sans “ed” and “s” plurals) and it could care less if the words are a repeat. I have to play that version completely differently.
I play that one like I’m playing “Quordle” from Merriam Webster (which is 4 Wordles at the same time). So, in that, I play 4 words that don’t share any letters at all. CRAMP, FLINT, BUDGE and SHOWY. Then, I just anagram the solution and get it in 5 (worst case). You couldn’t play it in “hard” mode for sure.
I agree Paul
We are all so invested in our Wordling !
Thank you sooo much Jeb for making this a helpful – AND -interactive site, for our worldwide wordle ‘family’, and for your commitment to responding to us all
GO YOU 👍🙏
Add problem fixed. Thank you!
And there was much rejoicing.
Nice Monty Python reference!
USING TIPS EXAMPLE
Today I used tip #1 and #3 in my play and it helped! Could be a coincidence of course.
Wordle 1691 3/6
🟩⬜⬜⬜⬜
🟩🟩⬜⬜🟩
🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩
* Guess #1 is one of my regular starters.
* Guess #2 was a good filter word. I did not look at the list because I just wanted good filter to narrow down choices.
* I looked up my next guess. It was an old PU so I put it in my back pocket.
* Guess #3 was the next word I thought of and it was not on the PU list. Win!
If I had not gotten it in 3, I would have pulled out the PU guess in my back pocket.
Out of curiosity I then looked up guess #2. It was a fairly recent PU, so it would not be a word I put in my back pocket but I used it early as a good filter.
So that’s Tip #1 and Tip #3 in action.
Here is the record on “added” and “repeated” words.
If we want to get into the brain of Tracy Bennett who is clearly a “word romantic” This makes sense, we need to see how often she edited the original 2315 word list created by Wardle.
650 days / GUANO
12 days / SNAFU
60 days / BALSA
9 days / KAZOO
307 days / LASER
15 days / PIOUS
131 days / BEAUT
21 days / MOMMY
34 days / PRIMP
0 days / UVULA
53 days / ATLAS
12 days / SQUID
28 days / INDIE
61 days / SPATE
32 days / SUEDE
0 days / GRIFT
25 days / TAUPE
15 days / ATRIA
9 days / NERVY
1 day / LORIS ???
2 days / TIZZY
3 days / GOFER
18 days / KEFIR ???
0 days / KNELL
1 day / MATTE
86 days / GIZMO
1 day / TINGE
14 days / COLIC
1 day / MUGGY
33 days / SITAR
2 days / OOMPH
26 days / CIGAR (1st repeat)
10 days / MOOCH
3 days / SQUAD (2nd repeat)
===========
You should note that she tends to add new words in groups of 2 and 3 with 0-3 days in between.
Don’t be surprised if tomorrow that we get another add or repeat.
I should also note that some of these words she’s adding are not common.
What the heck is LORIS??? LOL
also, these edits are coming with increased frequency since there are 634 words left on the original list.
Very interesting research! Thanks for sharing!
You’re quite welcome.
Add now
3 days / AWAKE (3rd repeat)
So, her pattern of 0-3 days holds. And her pattern of grouping 2-3 words in a cluster also holds.
The next question is whether she waits about 10 or 30 days for the next repeat or added word.
So, it took 11 days and today’s word is not a repeat, but it is an added word to the 2315 word list.
I said it would be 1 in 10 on either an added word or repeated word.
They have a plan, and I wish they would tell us. I guess mystery probably makes the game more engaging.
They sure do. I don’t want to know what their plan is, but I want to try to see if I can predict the plan though. We can’t predict which words will be repeats, but we might be able to find words that are not part of the original 2315 list if we can find the common words in the playable word list which is much larger.
According to Gemini, someone did an “audit” of the java code. You can enter up to 14,855 different 5 letter words. Only 2309 are on the answer list. 32 were added. The last one was “MOOCH”.
It seems fair that there a few words used in American English that aren’t on the original list, because Wardle is Welsh.
I just found a list of 10,663 words from Github that appear to be the playable words that aren’t on the 2315 list.
I am going to scour this list to see if any common words (not ending in S or ED) are there.
It wouldn’t shock me if another added word showed up tomorrow, because she tends to add them in pairs with just a couple days separating them.
SITAR and OOMPH are only separated by 3 days. That was about 43 days ago. Neither of these words were on the 2315 list.
JD, I just read how another site is doing this very thing and why. I get it. It means I have to “cheat” a bit by playing about 30+ hours early and scheduling an update to remove the answer from the site and then return it after a 30 hour period (the global timezone length of a Wordle day.) I’ll work on that!
After some thought, I’ve decided not to look at a future answer to adjust the past list to provide a “clue” about a repeat word today. It is an indirect spoiler.
I’m going to keep updating the “past” list and publish information as of yesterday at 6 a.m. E.T. to avoid spoilers for Hawaii time.
Took some thinking, but it came down to that’s how I would rather play. No future info.
Great.
BTW, I basically nailed it on my prediction of “tomorrow” except that it was the second repeated word and not and “added” word.
I suspect there will be another “added” or “repeated” word in about 10 days or so.
You have to figure that she’ll “mix in” words at a faster pace as we’re getting close to %75 of the original 2315 word list having been played.
I’ll take a look at my records and see if I can more accurately predict the pattern of “added” and “repeated” words now that we have 2 data points on repeats.
Re: Tracy’s FEB 10 statement “I’m not planning to tie future solutions to holiday and special events.” Surely it was simple coincidence then that the answer to FEB 14, Valentine’s Day was BLOOM (as in flowers), and that to FEB 18 was MOGUL (as in skiing) during the skiing competition at the winter Olympics.
While I am almost ranting, I surely hope the word SQUAW is removed from the list of potentially acceptable guesses, as it was/is an offensive term once used as… Well, this is a family site, so do a web search for why it’s considered to be an offensive term.
Thanks for this! I was really surprised that more commenters on the Wordle site did not mention how offensive this word is. One of WordleBot’s guesses in Hard Mode contained a W, so WB is apparently programmed to allow for the possibility of it as a solution. There is a Native American theme word list in the works which includes it. Sheesh!
Tip #3 is holding up.
CIGAR was puzzle 0 / 1689
SQUAD was puzzle 296 / 1704
AWAKE was puzzle 4 / 1708
Yeh, I’m watching for >365. First year would be one way to recycle words and goes with Tracy Bennett’s comment about not reusing “recent” answers.
I’m also happily mixing up PU now when needed, especially if they are older numbers like AWAKE #4. Had to go with that one!
It will be interesting if there is another repeat or add tomorrow, because of the 4 day intervals
MOOCH 1700 – 2/13/26
SQUAD 1704 – 2/17/26
AWAKE 1708 – 2/21/26
????? 1712 – 2/25/26
So, my prediction came true again.
SHRED was not on the 2315 list; so, it was a new word.
Let’s see if she does a repeat on March 1st!
I’m glad you posted the three tips–very helpful. It would be nice to have the actual data made available on tip #3. In the word list you could parenthetically show the game number where the word had first appeared. So, we’d see something like this in the chronological listing:
RAISE. 1725 03/15/26 (1035)2
Because of phone width, I’m tight in space with the two columns. I agree the “span of time” is very useful. A quick way is to look on the Alpha list because the repeats will be together:
SQUAD 2962
SQUAD 17042
If you do an on page search on the word, you can jump to all 4 instances across both Alpha and Chron:
SQUAD 1704 02/17/262
search again…
SQUAD 296 04/11/222
So far repeats are “old words”. Almost a 4 year time span!
Thanks for the feedback Porterjo!
This would just confuse the hell out of us Brits haha! For us it’s 15/3/26. There are a few times in the year when the difference between the American and the British notations is utterly difficult to work out! I like the way it’s being done at the moment… And it’s easy to scroll through the list.
As we are starting to see an “old words” pattern emerge, I’ll be refining the “LIST TIPS” link at the top of the page.
They could have used squab instead of reusing squad. They’re underestimating the intelligence and imagination of wordlers. I thought the hope of this game was to expand vocabularies, not shrink them.
I was in your “squab” camp Connie. One of my guesses.
I was going with squab also!!!
Same here with SQUAB! I thought I had it. Very disappointing choice! I’m not loving this new approach. It shes feel like dumbing down..
Thank you for providing as much intel as you do. Your work is appreciated!
I agree with this comment. I might have guessed this word myself if I didn’t guess “scuba” on the 3rd guess and ruled out the “b”.
My guesses were:
ROATE
GAILY
SCUBA (the only word left on 2315 list)
SQUAD
My wife actually guessed “SQUAW” which I figured wouldn’t be included since they already removed derogatory terms like “SLAVE”
I guessed squaw also, and squab! I even guessed squat, which was also previously used and finally squad on guess 6.
Hi just curious about why you’re highlighting the reused Wordles. I’m very disappointed in the NYT for starting to reuse them when they’re are plenty unused words still remaining, and I have contacted them since I have a subscription. But just curious, what benefit is there for the highlighting? Thanks, and thanks for having this page for the Wordle experience over the past few years. It’s been fun
Lori, Now that *any* word might be reused, we have to use the list differently. You’ll find suggestions under “LIST TIPS” link at the top of the list. One of those tips says “Don’t guess repeat words again” because it is highly unlikely those that have been used twice will be used a third time.
Another benefit of highlighting is for pattern observation– there are indications only older (year 1?) words will repeat first.
I’m building a “LIST TIPS” link you’ll find at the top of the list as we learn more about how to use the list. I’m still enjoying playing Wordle and sharing with my morning Wordle group, but it’s different.
Thanks for asking!
It’s still about a %90 chance (or better) that the answer will be an unused / unrepeated word.
So, these 2 repeats haven’t changed my strategy one iota.
And now a second word used again.
I would be happier with a complete restart over repeating words. For yesterday, there were 2 other never been used available words starting with SQUA that I entered before being ruined by the repeat.
I am thankful for the list. I treat a used word as one that no longer exists.
I always liked the idea of announcing they are going to shuffle the deck. Maybe every 3 years. This drip…. drip…. is driving some of us crazy. 😯
Today’s word is another repeat!
Sarah,
Announcing information about today’s answer (as in repeat) is a spoiler for the day. A lot of people did that today. I think it is still too new and exciting not to announce.
Although I really appreciate this list, it’s not helpful if it’s not correct. You posted today’s answer as a word already used and it was not. And a puzzle I would’ve had in three moves, took me five. And this is not a reused word. I’ve checked other sites that also post lists and today’s word was not on it.
JR:
NYT Wordle announced they would start repeating (some) past answers starting on Feb 2nd. Since that announcement, there have been two repeated words. Today was one of those. I (with several others helping) keep the list very accurate. It is based on past information. There is no look-ahead or same-day information.
Other sites have decided to play the game in advance and take that “future” information to remove the prior date word. That can be helpful because it is a good clue to what the answer is using future information to change the past list. I’ve decided changing the list based on future information crosses some line.
Jeb
Milking time zones in order to “change the future” does cross a line, in my opinion. Everyone should be on level playing field, regardless of time zone.
re: “And this is not a reused word.”
And just to clarify the word was reused today. The other lists you reference are gaming it a bit. The Five Forks list is accurate through yesterday. No spoilers.
the wordle word for today 2/17/2026 shows in your list as a word that has already been used
Wordle is starting to repeat words. This is the 2nd repeat since they started on Feb 2.
Joan, NYT has started reusing words. You will see repeated words flagged with a red 2, but that does not happen until we know the day of play and the list is updated the next day.
See the “LIST TIPS” link at the top of the list: https://www.fiveforks.com/wordle/
Thanks for the feedback!
This Wordle spate of double letter words (roost skull bloom mooch cello) and now reusing words is really irritating me 😠 After my start word (sauce) I was down to squad and squat but tried squab first hoping against hope that they weren’t gonna use a PU word so soon after the first one (16 days ago). Jerks.
My sister and I also like to start with SAUCE. And I too tried SQUAB. For now the odds still favor dodging words on the list BUT being ready to use them.
This word has already been used on a previous day! It was my understanding that words were never to be used twice. What is going on?
New York Times announced that they would start re-using words starting Feb 2, Ground Hog’s Day. TBD how often they will do that, but I’ve adjusted the way I play. See “LIST TIPS” link at the top of the list. Thanks for asking Eric!
You did not mark today’s Wordle as a repeat. Why?
I would have to play the game in advance to go get the “future information” and post it in advance. Indicating anything about today’s answer would be a “spoil” in effect.
I also have to account for Hawaii time (the last users of a given puzzle.) That is why I update all known through *yesterday* at 6 a.m. ET.
In short, I don’t go get future information to share with you because that crosses some line. The list is still useful if you follow the “List Tips” link at the top.
I’m done with Wordle! I have more than 100 words on my “avàilable” list that begin with today’s starting letter. Reusing words is nonsensical and unnecessary.
I still like playing today’s puzzle which I share with a small group of family. I’ve adjusted my play using the “LIST TIPS” at it is fun for now. See the link at the top of the list for the TIPS.
Twice you have words listed that are Wordle answers!
[Another site] is more accurate
Martha,
Did you know Wordle is starting to-reuse words? They announced they would start on Ground Hogs Day. I will be marking them with a red “2” to indicate they are repeats, since we are guessing they are not likely to repeat a 3rd time for a while.
Jeb
P.S. Five Forks is very accurate. 15,000 daily users and their feedback keep me in line!
Got it. Thanks for the response.
Oh, I see what the other site is doing. It is a bit like cheating in the sense I have to go look into the future and remove the answer from the list, and then put it back after that. I’ll work on that idea. Thanks Martha!
I’ve given it some thought. For several reasons, I am not going to play a future game in order to alter the past list to give an indirect “hint” at today’s answer. I’m going to keep using the list based on the “List Tips” link at the top of the list knowing that the list is only based on “past” information, not taking a peak at the future.
I did the math and I’d have to start playing 2 days in advance to go get the answer to alter the list! I just want to play Wordle with friends and family. 😉
Definitely don’t change your methods. The other website is now inferior because they remove duplicate words. I don’t use the list while I’m playing, but afterwards I like to see if/when the word was used. As far as I’m concerned, right now you have the only truly accurate list available.
Repeated word today
Repeat.
Today is a repeat.
Not being specific, but today’s answer was previously used.
The Wordle word for three of the last four days has two “double O”s. Was James Bond writing the puzzles this past week?
That’s GOOFY James. 😉 <-- #1222 10/23/24
okay…so at what point do we declare the “groundhog day” re-use of the very first solution simply a ruse to throw us all off the scent?
…and thank you all, btw, for making this excellent resource available and keeping it up to date. very much appreciated!
The day after next GroundHog day. 😉 Right now I’m focused on the re-use metric, which is going lower and lower given only one re-use. I can imagine a time where re-use rate exceeds new. Should that happen, the list is still important because it helps you play the odds.
It is only around 50% re-use rate that you don’t really need the list to play. The list has other pattern and archival interests, though, regardless.
And you are welcome nclark! Thanks for the feedback!
Without being specific, today’s answer is a repeat. So disappointed.
Love finding this thread
Hmm over 15,000 wordlers daily …… I know many will be the same, but think how many we all choose before arriving at the answer. 1-5 unused words per day – surely enough not to require repeats ! 🤷♀️
It has to do with a limited number of fairly common / easy words that keeps the game light and fun to the wider audience. That’s a judgement call, but it was a key part of how Wordle was designed. Josh Wardle (creator) thought it was important the game:
1. Not be too frustrating
2. Have a sense of “scarcity”
Right or wrong, I have to give him credit for building something so many people play every day.
Thanks for the feedback Glenda!
Hmm, not be too frustrating – he, he. I frustrated myself on the reused word – I figured out I had a choice of 3 …. mulled & ruminated, then finally entered 1 – completely forgetting I meant to use the oldest one next – could’ve got it in 2 – aaaargh!
Is CIGAR really the only word that’s been repeated? I swear I’ve come across at least three words that have been repeated. I can’t remember them off the top of my head, unfortunately…
Yes. CIGAR was the only repeated word. This site lists every answer since puzzle 0.
Hello! Thank you for doing this. I really appreciate it so much!
Recently, there have been ads on the site which I completely understand. It takes a lot to run the site. But, the ad never goes away. It covers the entire screen after it runs. There is no X button to close it out after it plays. (I am fine watching the ad and closing it, but I can’t close it.) This is on my phone, which is always how I access the site.
Right now I am accessing the site via another method.
I just wanted to give feedback because the ads have prevented me from going into the site.
Again, thanks so much for all that you do!
Tanya
Tanya,
I have just shut the ads off for now.
Google announced some kind of experiment with “Vignette” ads which are the large ones. It randomly picks out (on!) some visitors. I do not allow large ads on the site, but Google is still showing them. It doesn’t help they are “broken” because you can’t close them. Other websites are complaining, and I’ve submitted a complaint.
Thanks for the feedback!
Jeb
Jeb,
Thanks for explaining this Google “Vignette” issue : no problems for me on FF, but I now understand what caused problems on certain Connecticut news sites!
Hi,
I wouldn’t mind the ad if I was able to close out of it. I know you need to make a living.
The no-close ads are a bug from some (bad) experiments Google Ads announced. The Google support boards are lit up. I shut off ads until they are fixed. My settings are for the smallest ads possible, but the bug busted them.
You’d think Google would be good at coding. :-O
Thanks Shannon!
Hi. Ads make site impossible for me to use. Won’t be back
I’ve shut them off for now.
If you’ll boycott Google who is running these broken experimental ads, that would help. Thanks.
Google fixed the short anchor ads that were exploding. Resume normal.
Just spotted your email address. Hah!
Maybe they just will re-use words on Groundhogs Day?
Hah! There are two lists:
1) Allowed guesses (roughly 12,000) and a subset…
2) Past and future planned answers (roughly 3,000)
This is part of the genius of the design, and having #2 being a limited set of common words is important.
It is #2 that forces re-use at some point. They can (and have a bit) expanded into #1 for #2, BUT, they can only go so far to avoid broad user frustration.
So the shuffle is coming. But so far 1 “card” isn’t much of a shuffle! 😉
Thanks David!
Shouldn’t yesterday’s word be #1700?
If you believe in “math”. 😎
Fixed. Thanks Sheryl!
Your website is the best! Would suggest you consider the following: If the Wordle word for the day is a repeat, remove it from your list immediately when it gets introduced at midnight. Then, 24 hours later, place it back on your list in its original position, and also, as the most recently used word. Then your list will remain pristine for your ardent users! 😁💕
I think I see what you are up to.
Thing 1: I update the list at roughly midnight Hawaii time because they are the last major population playing any given day, and I work to have no spoilers.
Thing 2: I do not access or want to have access to future answers. The list is all about past only and no spoilers. I usually don’t know today’s answer until 8:30 a.m. Eastern.
So I don’t want to make any modifications to the list for “today.”
Thing 3: If a word repeats (as CIGAR), I am flagging it in 5 places for the next 6 a.m. ET update. The original and new instance is flagged on both the ALPHA and CHRON list, so that you can see it should you do an on-page search. The BLOCK list does not have dates or sequence #s, so the word just gets highlighted as a repeat.
But I’m all for making adjustments as we learn more and repeats start happening more often. It’s coming.
Thanks Tom!
I just released the new version of my web app: https://gwordle.gigini.it
If you want to try playing Wordle against my bot, or if you want some help with your daily attempts (see Helper).
Of course, the list of past used words is thanks to the contribution of FiveForks (!!).
Greetings Gianluca! Glad you were able to automate the Five Forks Wordle list pull.
Hope all is well in Italia! Grazie per i tuoi commenti! 😉
Kay jewelers ad coming up when I try to use your list Marked the ad inappropriate and it was deleted. This happen often?
Thanks Dennis. Google is running an experiment with “Vignette” ads that I just found out about, and even though I did not have these allowed on Five Forks, the experiment was sneaking through to some users.
I just found a setting Google auto-enabled under Vignette ads and disabled it. Hope that helps. I also wonder if this is all related to Valentine’s Day with the massive amount of “Kay Jeweler” ad spend.
I had abandon my Safari browser this morning, because there was a Humana Healthcare ad that came up which blocked most of my screen. There was no “X” to get out of it. Even when I cleared the browser and came back in, it was still there.
I’m using Duck Duck Go now. So far, so good.
Surge is listed as 1698. Should say 1699.
Bad math. Fixed. Thanks Sha!
Sure !
I predict the number of reused words will accelerate between now and the final word from the original “2400-word list.”
Backup theory is reuse rate will remain very low, extending the depletion date of the original list by many years.
I agree on acceleration, but they can create a long runway before using up the original list. My brother suggested Groundhog day was just a way to introduce that re-use is coming.
Two things:
I think the repeat on Feb 2 was JUST for Groundhog day and will not happen again (until next year maybe?). I’m guessing it was a once and done for that holiday, since there are many many many 5-letter words left.
Second thing, there’s so much content at the top now, when I use the little back-to-top links in the list, I still have to page down to get to the alphabet to search again…
I think this was an intro to “it’s coming because we need to do it.” It has to do with how important the limited number of “common” words are to keep the game light and fun.
Thanks for pointing out the “over jump” back to the top. I moved the “landing” point so you return to the A-Z index. Coding oversight.
Thanks Jen!
You have rendered your site pretty useless by forcing an ad that
Cannot be x’d out nor will finish so the wordle list is limited to viewing one or two words at a time. Switching to the other site. Prefer your layout but since I can’t even see the full list, there is no point in engaging
Thanks for reporting, CA. I’m working to get it knocked out.
Google is up to something. I have these “Vignette” (full screen) ads banned on the site, but Google announced some kind of experiment with Vignette ads, and they are not honoring the configuration. Bad on them. Also Kay Jewelers is buying a *ton* of ads because of Valentine’s Day, and that may be related. Possible rushed ad set up on Google’s side.
Lee sent me a screen cap that shows a “3 dot” menu in the upper right corner of the ad. That may be part of the experiment and have a close option under it?
Thanks again for the feedback!
CA,
I found out more about this Google experiment, and found a suggestion to double check Vignette settings. Sure enough, Google had auto-enabled a setting that may be allowing these full page ads. So I turned that off. I hope that (and / or Valentine’s day passing) helps!
Today a Google ad obscures the website on a up-to-date iPhone. That would normally be annoying, but, dang, there was no visible little [x] to dismiss it. Rotating the phone to landscape mode was the only way to get around it.
Lee,
Thanks for sending the screen cap. I’m hoping Google gets this “Vignette” ad experiment thing shut down soon. And I hope those 3 blue dots lead to a “close ad” option. That may be part of the experiment.
Jeb
Lee, Found a setting Google Ads had auto-enabled during its experiment and shut it off. Hope that helps!
I am still having this issue – I can no longer view your website on my iphone. The ad obscures the entire list and I can not figure out how to make the ad go away. Help???
You must have an older copy of the list Leah. See if you can follow this link to “bust” the cache:
http://www.fiveforks.com/wordle/?x=bustcache.
Also, clicking on the blue recycle button will bust cache, but I’m not sure you can see it. Let me know if that helps!
Google says they are working on the problem and offered this fix: “Turn the phone sideways to close the ad.” I’ve turned ads off, for now until they have it fixed. See my other suggestion on refreshing the list. Thanks Leah!
Jeb, thanks for posting the reuse rate and tips reminder at the head of the list. I keep both in mind in every game!
Hi. Love the five forks list! How about starting an unused word list as they are mostly still using new words. I started a list a while back and currently my list has over 250 words, albeit some are dubious even though they were accepted as words, such as ‘skene’ that my friend used instead of scene the other day!
I’ve started getting pop
Ups that hijack the whole page
and I have to reload 5 or 6 times before I can use the list.
It’s been happening for about 5 days now
Thanks for reporting Michael. I have ads set to the smallest and most minimal size. They should only slip into a short window at the top or bottom one time per visit.
But it looks like a deceptive “scareware” ad campaign slipped through Google’s ad filters. I was able to find a batch of them and block them.
Hope that helps!
I also sent you an email if you want to return a screen cap should you see another one.
Thanks again!
This happens to me every day with every ad now.
I couldn’t find my original reply.
I wanted to give you an update.
Since NYT (Tracy Bennett) repeated CIGAR, it’s been 8 days in a row of answers from the 2315 list.
No added words.
No repeats.
So far.
I expect either an add or a repeat in a day or so. (I predicted 1 in 10.)
I found this quote on CNET that I had not seen before.
NYT Wordle editor Tracy Bennett:
“I plan to continue to feature first-time words in 2026, as there are still many beautiful new words to run. Outside of [the] wink to Groundhog Day, I’m not planning to tie future solutions to holidays and special events. Though there’s no strict rule, I will likely prefer words that haven’t run very recently.”
So preference for new words. Your 1 in 10 prediction could be spot on. Time will tell.
I think your current method is helpful, thanks!!
Hi Jeb,
I was thinking swoop was a repeat word though could be wrong about that.
Tamara
I double-checked. First appearance was: SWOOP #1692 02/05/26.
One way to know that is true is all of the buzz the first repeat (CIGAR) created. The next repeat will also create at least *some* buzz.
Thanks for watching over the list, Tamara!
Much thanks for the big blue buttons! They make it easier, by far.
So far, the only reused word was on ground hogs day. Twice, I reused a word only to be “burned”. So I’m going to continue guessing unused words until the next used word.
That’s what the early 14% re-use indicates. I’ll be updating that calculation every day. If we ever get to 50/50 then the list is not as critical at predicting.
Thanks for the list and the three new tips (which I can’t find anymore; your hyperlink just leads me to a bunch of feedback.)
The 17% re-use figure seems kind of meaningless to me. Shouldn’t it be one re-use out of 1694 words? (.06%). The odds of re-use in any given day are clearly not 17%, with around 600 unused words left.
Thanks for asking about this Amy.
The 17% is important but is an early value that helps determine how often NYT will re-use a word vs use a new word. They only started this new pattern on February 2, and the current trend is “once a week”, but again we need more data. We’re trying to predict if the next word will be on the list or not and if that matters. Data prior to February 2nd isn’t useful because it was a different rule then (no re-use.)
Based on one week of data, the odds of a word being re-used is 17%, so that suggests avoiding words on the list. A month or two of data will be more telling.
Also, would you consider having a PayPal option on your site,, for buying coffee for you?
Good idea! I like BuyMeACoffee because of the optional public comments, but their credit card form isn’t as easy as Venmo or PayPal.
The comments are definitely fun to read! And Informative. No worries, I will still buy you some coffee, this week. I appreciate the tips and how well run your site is.
Hi Jeb, your link to List Tips goes here now, but I don’t see the tips you compiled anymore. Broken link, or I just need to have more coffee? ☕
Thanks C.T.! With so many comments the “List Tips” got pushed off the first page, so I re-set the date to the future to make it “pin” to the top. Need to come up with a better way to do that, but should do for now!
Three eclipses today! FILET, MOSSY, SCALD, all appear next to themselves. 😀
This seems historic! Nice spot Teelee!

(Note: An “eclipse” is when the same word lines up on the left Alpha list from the right Chron list on a device where they are side by side. It’s always changing.)
Thanks so much for providing this service. I use it every time I Wordle. And your guidance in our new “repeating words” era is very helpful.
What does it mean that it will be flagged as a “2”? where?
And thank you very much for providing this list.
A red “footnote” number 2 at the end of repeated words. You can see this on all four occurrences of “CIGAR” on the Alpha and Chron lists. As of today, that’s the only repeat.
I’m also keeping a counter of re-use to new use at the top to help understand the “odds” of re-use vs. new.
Thanks for asking Tim!
Thanks Five Forks for noting the onset of duplicate words that began on Groundhog’s Day! I lost a lot of brain cells trying to solve in 2. (There was only one possible guess after my 1st word!)Then I found your site. And chanced CIGAR!
So you’re my new go-to! THANKS 🥰
Welcome Vicki! For now the list still has use given the ratio of new to used words. TBD if that changes.
In regards to the February 2nd “repeat”:
I first wondered if they were playing a joke based on the Bill Murray movie (Groundhog Day.. the “repeat theme seemed to fit).
The I wondered: since NYT “goofed” long ago and forgot to list CIGAR as the first word (hence requiring it to be listed as 0), were they just trying to “fix” the goof by repeating it (so no more zero).
I wondered that, too, but they have used well over half of the “common words” list which is a key to the way the game is designed. So re-use had to start at some point, and I think we are there. Thanks Barbara!
If I were doing it, I would add the oldest PU word into the eligible list every day and chose from the eligible words at random.
Or the 7 oldest PU every week
or the 30 oldest PU every month
Or the 365 oldest PU every year
You get the idea. We will get a better idea once a few more PU show up.
I agree. I’d even be ok if you ended up with (super rare) back-to-back same answer. But yeah, a 7 day or 1 month “time out” not a bad idea. Thanks Wes!
It’s interesting how NYT chose Groundhog’s Day to begin their repeats?
Great promo idea. Sure created a lot of buzz. Fun movie!

If you are looking for trends on the use of old words, maybe see if only part of the old list is back in circulation. Maybe the first 500 words?
A quick look at the wordle bot break down of possible solutions, shows more recently used words as <.1% chance of being the solutions but (based on my quick check of approx 10 words) those in the first 500 were the same chance (i.e. .7%) as unused words.
I’ve been using this list for a long time and thought it would be redundant now! I’ll still keep using it. Thanks you for all the hard work, it’s very much appreciated.
Thank you for creating this list. I plan to continue using it until it becomes plain that it increases the number of guesses I need to solve the puzzle. I had been making my own list of solving words beginning mid-2023, and accumulated 224 before I discovered your wonderful site. Your 3 tips will likely be good guidance for quite some time.
Thank you very much.
Larry
Comments below to original tips.
(See newer tips post.)
Thanks Jeb !!!
I found the original 2315 word list from Wardle himself. Subtracted the 6 words which were removed by NYT and then subtracted the played words from this list. I keep these in a spreadsheet. There are 647 words yet to be played from the original list. 31 words have been added by Tracy Bennet. That’s less than a %2 rate overall, but I think it’s increasing. I did notice they are being added in pairs with only one or two words in between. Then, it can be 30 to 60 days in between the pairs. Before the 3 pairs, she added a group of 3 and a group of 5. I always start with ROATE, because that plays the 5 most common letters in all Wordle answers, I haven’t calculated whether that is the best guess based on the words that are left to be played in the 2315 list. After ROATE, I also calculated the best second guess based on the words left. The worst case scenario is matching no letters and that leaves me with 75 words left from 647 possibilities originally. Then, usually guess SLIMY which is slightly better than SILKY which last time narrowed it down to SHINY, SPIKY, and SPINY. It ended up being SPINY and I got it in 4 guesses. My overall average is 3.47 guesses.
re: “There are 647 words yet to be played from the original list.” Wow, I did not realize there are less than 2 years remaining. NYT had to start getting the past “common” words back in play. Common words create less “friction” amongst the players.
I appreciate you sharing this JD. So what are your thoughts on these questions I’m thinking about:
1. What will be the near-term ratio of new vs. re-used answers?
2. Are all previous words (maybe 2025 and earlier) in play now or perhaps only first year words are in play?
3. Are the words this week in “time-out” for some period of time?
4. Can repeats repeat again?
I know we need more information, so maybe help keep these questions in mind. These rules / patterns can help determine if “the list” is still useful. Full-on immediate and random re-use means a list does not help play. It can help with curiosity, so I’ll be keeping the list updated no matter.
Thanks again!
Well, time will tell ultimately what will happen. So far, today’s answer and yesterday were both from the 2315 list and not repeats.
Let’s say for argument’s sake that her plan is to throw all past answers back into the pool and have someone write a script to randomly select a solution from the entire list of 2340 solutions (which includes the 31 words she added), then the unplayed words comprise %28 of the possible solutions. That’s roughly 1 in 4. So, I would expect every 3 out of 4 solutions to be repeats.
So far, that hasn’t happened, but it’s early yet. In these 2 days, she hasn’t even added a word to the list. It’s possible she’s running out of those possibilities.
A frightening thought would be that she chooses not to play some of the remaining 646 words. So, I could be guessing words that will never be the answer!
By the way, ADIEU is not on the 2315 list. Neither is ROATE. The odds of getting it in ONE are almost nothing. She’s way more likely to add ADIEU than ROATE which shouldn’t even be a word anyway. I digress.
My gut feel is that she’ll “mix in” repeated answers at a much slower rate than 3 out of 4. It may be more like 1 out of 10.
I sense that she literally has a schedule for WORDLE answers. I have even heard this list is available somewhere. I don’t want to know.
So, answers for the next month or so are probably already set by her.
We’re overdue for an added word.
Yes, I think ALL previous words are in play, but she may “favor” some of the really early words when a lot of people (including me) were not playing. Especially words on days where 2 puzzles were available.
I don’t know what you mean by words being on
a “time out”. Do you mean that she is not likely to repeat words from this week?
I agree with what someone else said about the Wordle Bot. I think this is a strong indicator that many 2025 and 2026 words wont be repeated.
I don’t think she’ll repeat words multiple times until the list is completed, but I could be wrong.
I hope that helps.
re: “time-out”. That’s right, the two “new” words that were played this week (and really all future new words)… are they eligible for a random drawing for re-use immediately or after x days / weeks / months?
Since they are able to edit the future, I wonder how “sacred” the current future set of words are. I’m surprised the longer set of future words are stored in the code. I can see having a week or a month of future words to allow for some off-line play, but why so far out? I think all bets are off as they shuffle the future.
8 in a row since CIGAR from the 2315 list.
I think either a new or repeated word will happen in the next day or so.
Hi Jeb!
I switched WordleBot to the “considering previously used (PU) words” set and found something. The bot is now listing PU words with dates previously used up to 9/01/24. I didn’t find any words used later than 9/01/24. My guess is words from 2025 probably won’t be reused yet, but I can’t say this with any certainty.
Thanks for the tip Lisa! You are using the BOT for clues. Nice!
Brilliant Jeb
I’ll carry on using FF.
I don’t understand WHY the NYT has started reusing words? There are still thousands of 5 letter words not yet used. For now I will continue to do Wordle daily. I use this list daily, and find it very helpful. Thank you.
Actually, it’s exactly 11,275 words. This would include all the plurals ending in “S” and past tense words ending in “ED”
Unrelated. Did you guys know that when you fly over the International Date Line, your streak ends! I flew to
Japan a couple of years ago and when I crossed over the line, I lost a whole day including that day’s WORDLE.
You can avoid that by changing your date and time zone before playing. I’ve had to do this on vacation when I forgot to play, so the next day I change date and time, play “yesterday”, and then advance it to play today. Streak maintained!
So how far back can you go with this reset idea? I too missed or forgot to play about a month ago. Could I change the date and time and have another opportunity?
Cool advice. I remember the first repeat word was one of way old.
Wordle might not “repeat” until next Groundhog Day…
Meanwhile, I will continue using this fabulous site!
Would you be willing to share your spreadsheet with us?
Deborah, I don’t maintain a spreadsheet. I hand code the HTML on the pages each day and then schedule the update for 6:00 a.m. E.T. so as not to be a spoiler for Hawaii players. You can highlight the list and copy/paste it into a word document or spreadsheet, though.
I think she was asking JD not you Jeb 🙂
Why do you think they are they reusing words? Has the New York Times come out with this statement as to why they are reusing words? Do you have a link to any information?
The creator, Josh Wardle, tested Wordle on friends and family. He discovered if he used uncommon words, it frustrated players. So he and his partner went through 12,000 5-letter words and reduced it to common, non plural (s), not past tense (ed) words. That limited it to less than 3,000 words, or roughly 7 years. In order to retain that player-friendly common word list, NYT is faced with “shuffling the deck” somehow. You have to give credit to Josh to have made such a popular game that NYT paid him a lot of $$$ for!
Imagine a 6 letter Wordle!
I’ve wondered that as well, with a 7th added guess. I’d prefer that to the repeat format, which is what makes quordle less serious a challenge.
I HATE this plan to use previous words! Why don’t you just start over? This new system will definitely hurt people’s scores. I may cancel my subscription.
I think each day’s word should just be random, and not worry about repeats. What is more important is the curated (and limited) set of common words that don’t frustrate people (very often) by being obscure.
Perhaps the duplicate day was a one- off occurrence, for Groundhog Day. We can only hope!
Thanks for your great website!
Karen
For that reason, I thought about playing “CIGAR” again on Feb 3, because I’m a fan of the movie. LOL.
Reflecting on PU words being open for reuse, I think that LUCK has become an even bigger factor in Wordle solutions. While there’s always been a lot of luck needed especially in starting words, the need for luck has now increased exponentially.
I will probably give up my nightly addiction. 🙁
Gerry, See the example I posted under LIST TIPS. It was a fun and different way of playing for me today and worked! Of course that’s just one day… 😉
I’ll have to disagree here. Reusing words increases the skill level, in my opinion.
