In this case, with “Knowledge of past answers” turned on, the Bot thought that WORTH (NU) and FORTH (PU from 2021) both had a 41% chance to be the answer, while FORTY (PU from 2024) had an 18% chance to be the answer (all three have an equal WB weight of 58).
So, this shows that the Bot thinks that (given equal WB weight) a PU from 2021 is equally likely as an NU, while it thinks that a PU from 2024 is about 44% (18/41) as likely as an NU to be the answer.
==============================================
Grid art: the bee marches FORTH to ruin the picnic by landing on the TORTE (making it WORTHless).
I would totally eat food a bee walked on.
I sipped a live bee from a can of Coke. Had no idea it was in there. No sting. 🐝
Did the bee escape your mouth or did you swallow it?
I set him free quickly!
Me, too… especially if it were a pumpkin torte.
FORTY #986 is not a first year repeat #364 or less.
WB may be factoring that in.
Yes, I suspect that, with knowledge of prior answers turned on, the Bot will give a PU from the past year a <1% chance, with the % gradually increasing as the age of the PU increases, until the PU gets old enough that the Bot gives it an equal % as an NU.
I will continue to keep track of this. Stay tuned!
Cousin Ez, this is exactly what I have been noticing (posted about it today, too!)
With knowledge turned on for the bot—it appears the bot is more accurate and up-to-date than weighted bottles.
In recent weeks, I’ve started to note this discrepancy in my lists of words to test.
Let us know what you find, cuz. 👏
Did you check to see if the Weighted Bottles list on Wordle Tools has changed at all?
Maybe there’s a lapse.

I was seriously going to predict that you would start the game with WORTH today. That would have entered you into the WORTH FORTH club and still given you the 2 that you usually get.
I wish. But WORTH isn’t on my Starts List.
Hmmm, who are the average wordlers ?
The people that just make guesses without any analysis. Those of us who analyze every guess don’t do as well when the answer is a ♻️.
I think I might be on the cusp of being an average Wordler.
Yo Amy, at the end of the day, you are still above average! Average ended up being 4.2 🥳
“That’s the news from Lake Wobegon, where all the women are strong, all the men are good-looking, and all the Wordlers are above average.” – G.K.
I had to look that up Jeb -thank you for furthering my knowledge
Yay to diversity & inclusivity 💚
Oh, the irony! Lake Wobegon is part of our culture here in MN but it and Garrison Keillor were cancelled several years ago. Seems GK was a little too “demonstrative” with his lady coworkers.
The other irony is that he is extremely not good looking. That was part of the joke, I guess.
I miss the news from Lake wobegon. Thanks for the memory. 😊
Samesies … I hear you on that Linda of the Mountains…. i used to listen to all the public radio shows. And, the Prairie Home Companion show was from MN so I went to the Fitzgerald and saw the show sometimes. I got to see Lyle Lovett on the show once—a real treat. Those were the days… Writers Almanac, CarTalk, The Splendid Table (with Lynne Rosetto Kasper), A Way with Words (the original), Wait Wait, etc… I still occasionally catch some shows, but, losing the Prairie Home Companion was a huge blow as was CarTalk and Kasper. 😭
Ahh, reminds me of Mom. She loved listening to that show. In fact, I just packed many cassette sets of the show into a box for the library. I couldn’t bring myself to throw them away, so they can do it if they don’t want them.

I think your yellow squares are off somehow.
2) ROFT should have gotten yellow squares instead of CR.
3) TR should have gotten yellow squares instead of RAWL
Maybe those got reversed?
🐕 Excellent puppy grid art!
Yes, but what would it look like if the squares were on the correct rows?
Perhaps this is grid art fraud! We have the grammar police, but now we need the grid art police!
I was thinking about this. Perhaps it’s more likely that the words are on the wrong rows rather than the squares being on the wrong rows. CROFT and TRAWL should be reversed in the word list.
Then, the dog lives!
Your idea about the words being on the wrong rows is surely right. Good thinking!
Much better than the only idea that came to my mind, that he was manually putting in the colored square emojis. That was so ridiculous I chose not to even suggest it!
I just thought that it’s the most perfect puppy grid art yet so I assumed Eric made it manually by moving squares around. Bow wow wow.

🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 FORTH #55
OK so another 1st year REPEAT off the board! One less to be concerned with.
RAISE leaves 22 OG NU.
CRONY gives me a 3 in 12 of those. So, it’s not awesome, but still the best filter.
CRONY left me with FUROR, GOURD, JUROR, TUMOR and WORTH.
FUROR or JUROR gives me a guaranteed 4 if they weren’t the answer themselves.
Going alphabetically and an F over a J, I went FUROR.
This was fortunate, because it gave me the lead F and ruled out all the OG words.
It also ruled out all the ADDs!
What’s left?
FORGO #316
FORTH #55
So, for many reasons FORTH is the choice.
1) earlier REPEAT
2) plays T and H over G, OO (Goo! Yuck!)
Very fortunate to get 4 on this one.
This is not a good month for me. Looking forward to October.

Had FORTH in mind and knew there was a chance of a repeat with it being #55. But kept looking and found the fresh WORTH.
What a frustrating coin flip for those of us who didn’t go with F in an early guess. Repeat or new word? New word or repeat?
Glad to see I’m at least in good company with all the WORTHs out there.
We’re getting to the point where adds and 1st year repeats and fresh words are almost the same probability. We may have crossed that rubicon already as far as we know. 🤷♀️
We’re not quite at that point yet. Here are the current odds.
OG NU – 55%
ADD’s – 35%
REPEATs – 10%
========================================
The future REPEAT odds leading up to today were 16.1%
It has dropped to 13.3%
Historical average (since CIGAR) is 10.3% This why I think the base average is 10% (or 10.5% worst case).
========================================
The future ADD odds are now 33.3%
Long average on ADDs since CLUNK is 34.1%
I believe the target average is 35.0%.
=======================================
Taken together the odds on OG NU is still slightly higher.
If the REPEAT and/or ADD increase a bit, then it could be.
But consider that the pool of unplayed ADDs (>37% WB) is still 593.
The pool of OG NU is only 447.
The pool of 1st year OG is only 340.
So, the odds relative to the word pool size still strongly favor OG NU words (or GNU words??)
Agreed… We’re not there yet, fo sho! Though I quirky, imperfect, and perhaps even nonlogical humans will decide when and it may or may not be determined by the above.
Noting your new numbers which are EXTREMELY useful. 👏
*Though I think
Glad to see we’re on the same page.
BTW, is GNU = OG NU?
gnu=nu
It’s a kralcism.
Though it would save time for we “lazy” players, it would also cause confusion. btw u are the least lazy person I’ve ever seen.
I might have played WORTH if I didn’t have both FUROR and JUROR to consider.
With luck I chose FUROR to get F1.
This still resulted in a 4.
Given a choice between a 1st Year OG and a OG NU, I’m picking the OG NU every time. To me this is not a coin flip. It’s 55% vs. 10% choice.
I agree JD… but there will be a rubicon moment sometime…eventually.
While Caesar is on the other side of the river, I’m still playing the same strategy.
We will know the moment he crosses.
Then, we’ll pivot.
We’ll pivot into chaos!!! 🤪
What’s the other 35%? 🤔
ADD’s. Something you don’t care about.
Pretend I wrote 90% to 10%.
I will. … But I won’t pretend to agree with those odds. 😁
— — —
Taking a different angle on your stats driven approach, and maybe I have some of this wrong, you are working from a list of the original words and do very well. You also seem to do well with the added words, even though you don’t know what’s on the added words list. But you self-admit to not expecting to do well with repeats since you’re solving for non-repeats until you can’t.
I wonder what would happen to the stats if you drop those first 200 some words from the pre-NYT games into your possibles list at day 9 or 10, or even earlier.
Not saying play for a repeat, but at some point open the door to the possibility of a repeat. You might find that your play is eliminating those words anyway on some days. Then when a repeat word isn’t eliminated, you can consider its weighted score and all that.
I’m just thinking that none of us who did were right for playing WORTH and Jeb obviously wasn’t wrong for not playing it and going for the repeat. There might be a way to run those first 200+ words through some stats before giving up on them.
Whether you agree with the odds or not doesn’t change the odds.
You are free to play Wordle however you want to. No one is telling you how you should play.
Actually, I don’t believe I do that well with the ADDs either! LOL.
My focus is to hyper focus on the unplayed words on the original answer list. Once I rule those out, I consider ADDs. Once I rule out ADDs, I consider first year REPEATs. It was recently REPEATs under #237 (the day NYT actually took over) until FOCUS #267 was played.) I still favor the earliest REPEAT. Today was a good example. I had FORGO #316 and FORTH #55 to choose from.
As you aptly pointed out, playing to eliminate possibilities from one group of words also eliminates it from the other 2 groups of words.
The difference is that I’m usually playing a possible answer from the OG NU list. This means I have a better shot at scoring a 2 playing an OG NU than a ADD or a REPEAT.
What you have suggested, I’ve already done. I have a sheet that maps out of the possibilities of RAISE with just the 2315 list. I also have a copy of that sheet with 2315 list, the ADD list, and first year unrepeated REPEATs. So, I’ve been adding these words to my sublists, but I keep them separated.
I also have started to include a column on all the sublists with the WB%.
So, I can use these secondary lists to help guide me in decisions on which OG NU to play. If all else is equal, if the guess can eliminate more ADDs or first year OG’s, then I go that way.
If, as Tina has suggested, the odds even out between 2 or more of the groups, then I probably change my start word to ROATE or AROSE and go from there. AROSE would force me to create entirely new sublists for each return possibility.
The stats / odds are based on 1) history of what has happened since CIGAR and CLUNK. 2) what Wordle Tools is posting. Over time, these odds have been converging on percentages close to what I have stated %55 / %35 / %10.
So, playing neither WORTH or FORTH is right or wrong. I don’t think there is right or wrong in this game. It’s matter of what you believe gives you the best chance to solve Wordle.
If you feel strongly that a REPEAT is today, go for it. Don’t let me stop you.
I don’t rule out any word, I just prefer to play OG NU words, because I think they are more likely to be the answers over 1st year REPEATs (which only happen %10 of the time). That’s my opinion based on the data.
I read a lot of comments on this site of people being “worried” about REPEATs. I don’t see the point in being concerned about a group of words that are only coming around once every ten days (on average).
ADDs are a lot more concerning than REPEATs.
If you’re playing Wordle in a way that plays the most frequent letters up front, I think you narrow down the solution pretty quickly no matter what group it is in.
I completely agree with your strategy and overall assessment of the likelihoods
However, I don’t think the fact that OGs AS A GROUP have been the solution 55% of the time and the fact that repeats AS A GROUP have been the solution 10% of the time means that, if choosing between an individual OG NU and an individual 1st year PU, the likelihood ratio will be 55:10 (or 90:10).
I believe you would have to normalize for the total number of words in each group to find the likelihood of one individual remaining OG NU being the answer vs. the likelihood of one individual 1st year PU being the answer.
I recall you calculating something like this recently, at least for OG NU vs. repeat vs. ADD, and the likelihood for an individual OG NU being higher than that of both ADD and repeat. I’m sure that, if you narrowly look at the rate of first-year repeats, it will be higher (on a per-word basis) than the rate of repeats overall, though not necessarily as high as the rate of OG NU.
So, for the REPEATs, I only consider the unrepeated REPEATs of puzzle numbers #364 or less.
Without looking, I think there have been 25 REPEATS, so there are 365 – 25 = 340.
So, the per word odds in that category are 10% / 340 = 0.029% per word.
Now, I could possibly scale those odds for words closer to puzzle #0 vs. puzzle #364. I would have to study the graph to see where the greatest concentration of REPEATs land in regards to puzzle numbers.
Maybe, if there were logical groupings of 3.
————————————————————–
#0 to 121, #122 to #244, #245 to #364 then I could compute those odds.
With only 25 REPEATs, there isn’t a ton of data points to go on.
=================================
ADDs are 35% as a category.
So, 35% / 594 = 0.059% per ADD word.
So every ADD word is 2X as likely to be played as a 1st year OG NR (not repeated). Let’s call it “OG 1YR NR”
The ADDs are all the non 2315 words listed on the WB% list with WB% > 37% (for now). If I eliminated words from 37%-40% (PSHAW is 40%), then the per word % actually would increase slightly.
====================================
OG NU have about 447 left.
55% / 449 = 0.122% per word.
So each individual word from that list is twice as likely as an ADD and 4X as likely as an OG 1YR NR.
====================================
Note that the per word % doesn’t change the ODDs of the overall category. This is circular reasoning since the per word odds are based on the category odds.
Ah, I didn’t realize you were only including repeats <#365 in your initial analysis.
Good to know that the differences in rates are so stark! Thank you for crunching the numbers!
Clearly, the Bot is far too conservative in diminishing it's predicted odds for repeats (since the Bot assumes that OG NU odds = 2021/2022 PU repeat odds = ~2x 2024 PU repeat odds)

✔️ Did a spot check this week comparing 🤖 v weighted bottles (WB) probabilities. Surprised me that 🤖 was slightly more accurate (I tend to think of 🤖 as sorta glitchy) than WB.
For example comparing 2 previously used words from today BIRTH and FORTH:
🤖 rated BIRTH slightly less than FORTH
WB rated BIRTH equal to FORTH
Birth should be rated LESS than forth, as it is a PU OG word from 2023. Forth is from first year repeats so should be rated MORE. But WB gave them both the same 58% rating. 🤖’s rating was more accurate.
✔️ But also…
🤖&WB probability: repeat FORTH and never used WORTH and add POTTY rated equally.
👉🏻first year repeat=never used=add/new
✨ Still… will continue playing never used first until these probabilities are more steady over time.
…………………………………..
Whomp word=a word that filters/narrows down the solution pool but could not be the answer.
Graphing recent answers vs WB% would be an interesting study.
It would be incredibly difficult to produce that graph… however, I have started to record in my word lists on the fly for the patterns that I encounter using SLATE as a starter.
Not really. I would just have to add the WB% in a new column next to the played words in one of my sheets. Excel would generate the line graph.
It would just be time consuming to look up the WB% for every word that has been played.
I am not sure that wouldn’t just do the words since CIGAR2 or CLUNK though.
I imagine that is because you have knowledge of prior answers turned on, which the Bot uses to adjust the answers beyond the WB weights.

🙋🏼♀️ how do you do a link to a specific comment in the AP? I’ve seen Jebson🛸 do this many times and he has a nice clean link to an exact comment that has the comment # (I think).
Hi
Do you mean Jeb? As the webmaster I’m sure he has skills I don’t have. I accidentally made a link by going to the text and copying it. I thought it would import JD’s whole comment. But it instead provided the link.
Yes Jeb (Jebson 🛸 today only to fit today’s theme 🤖)
Right, but she only matched 2 letters at that point.
I think COUTH wasn’t a bad play. You get the C, U played and play the O and the T in different positions which turned out to be correct.
I haven’t charted STEAL, but T in the wrong position probably leaves a ton of OG NU words. Probably at least 40 of them. So, best case it’s a 3, but probably a 4.
That’s exactly right, JD. Those are all the reasons I played COUTH. If the T wasn’t in the 4 the position, my next word would start with a T.
This is why I LOVE having green letters. It eliminates choices. I play in Hard mode.
🙋♂️
think i located the secret sauce. if you click and hold (on an iphone anyway) on the date/time entry just below the commenter’s name you can copy the link to that specific comment.
if you examine the link you can also see that it has a date and number reference in it. here is what your question link looks like:

⚡️party on ctbs(iezm)!
cheers,
kralc
Well Jeez oh Pete and Jumpin’ Jehosaphat, the mystery is officially solved!
Kralc’s insight works on the iPad, too.
🙏 I thank thee from this side of the Mississippi.
On Chrome on a Windows PC, at least, you can highlight text, right click, and select “Copy link to highlight.”
The date under each person’s name is a unique URL that links to their comment (or reply) using an #comment (aka anchor tag.) Click on that and then copy the URL.
For example your comment:

Feel good in the fact that you played this the correct way after BIGOT. (I probably wouldn’t have picked that word.)
REPEATs are going to happen once every 10 days.
Jeb plays REPEATs every day. Today he was correct.
That doesn’t mean you used incorrect strategy.
Repeat after me:
Jeb does *not* play REPEATS every day.
Jeb does *not* play REPEATS every day.
Jeb does *not* play REPEATS every day.
Hilarious!

I love your haiku.
Sounds like the end of a war.
Petals fall to earth.
I love both of your haikus. Yet I do not reply to you both in the same manner. Rude.
Very good👍
Great! Good job both of you.
Maybe HAIKU will be played now (instead of words like we had today).
Sometimes you come out on the wrong side of the 50-50.
I have had many of them lately.

I wonder who, today, will not play WORTH. TB set a trap today.
I did not, since I got the F
A-ha! You win that one.
If it had to be a repeat today, FORTH #55 might be preferred to FROTH #350 as the earlier pu. But Tracy is tricksy!
I had FUROR and JUROR to consider and WORTH wouldn’t have ruled out either of them.
So, fortunately, I went with FUROR.

You played this the right way.
Everyone played WORTH over FORTH. (I didn’t have the T; so, I played FUROR.)
You are not alone.
What can I say JD – trendsetter… 😆
That you are!
I would have said you were the first, but Meg beat you to that 2 word combo today! LOL.
yep – hadn’t scrolled to the bottom yet….

ROLLY wasn’t a smart choice.
I learned a new word. Also learned how to *not* spell roly-poly (pill bug.)
I also learnt/learned a new word – tho it (Google) gave up several option 1st & I had to hunt for it
– the 1st being the name of the dog on our woeful toiletpaper adds.
Wow! Roly-poly just seems wrong! I would have though it would have two Ls because they roll!
I know how you feel.
PHEW! 😮💨 you made it anyway!
Look again.
LOLZ … I pulled a JD. Oh well.. at least I an humor myself.
I am not one to emulate! LOL.

Ah, look again Glenda – ’twas Meg began the trend……
FWIW, I still think you’re a trend setter even though she started this particular trend.
You just brought a big smile to my face 😊
