I got it down to Dryly or Wryly. One search indicated that Wryly is the more common word, but a second search yielded more detailed results and indicated that Dryly is more common. Also, D is a more common first letter as compared to W based on the original NYT List. It might have been just the luck of the draw, but I’m happy to have tied with the Bot.
You beat the bot, which got it in 4.
Hi Truce,
Thanks! That is very interesting! When I checked earlier today, the Bot average was 3.0, however I read that it is adjusted periodically throughout the day. Below: A link to more info than you ever wanted to know! Just copy and paste it into the address bar.

Jeb, thanks for telling us what the world is celebrating each day. I love the idea behind “R U OK” Day. Yes, let’s check on each other!
Today would have been the birthday of a friend who died of suicide a few years ago, years after she moved away from our neighborhood. Since then, I’ve been trying to check on friends more often.
A few days ago, I saw someone wearing an Elmo t-shirt that asked, “Are you ok?” I thanked him for wearing it.

In that page, I selected 5 letters and entered “OYICD?” That’s how I came up with YOICK. I was surprised that Wordle accepted it; I had no idea what it meant.
After YOICK, three unused words remained: DRYLY, FURRY, WRYLY.
Glad it worked out for you!
Did you look up the meaning of the word YOICK?
I think that’s part of the fun of this.
You’re more than OK.

Yes, Wiktionary said it’s an alternative form of yoicks:

DILLY DILLY! (If you remember old Bud Light commercials.) LOL.
Dang… I don’t know that one. I’ve been kinda commercial free since late last century.
That’s impressive!
I assume that’s mostly not watching TV. Or mainly sticking with public television and radio. Any way you’ve done it, I imagine you read a lot.
🙋🏼♀️Don’t get too congratulatory … While I do read a lot … I also watch a 💩ton of shows & movies commercial free (dvds, vhs back in the day, pbs, and always ad-free streaming). Recently started youtubing again since learning of the yout-ube trick to avoid ads.
Still, there’s a 💩ton of product placement in said shows & movies… and even (gasp!) books.
Currently & finally watching Abbott Elementary. What ‘bout you?
I’m a long time screen junkie.
I very much fit the Jim Gaffigan joke about television vs. reading.
‘- I just prefer reading. -‘
‘Have you watched television!? It’s WAY better. There’s picture. There’s sound. And most importantly, no reading!’
(I do read sometimes. … Some movies have subtitles. 😁)
I enjoy organizing my collection of thousands of movies and shows on VHS to 4K, mainstream to weird and obscure.
But we’ve cut back on streaming services a lot.
Last night I went out to see the Mystery Science Theater 3000: RiffTrax Experiments. That omni-referential humor is very much my jam.
Pretty cool! Booyah, a lot of great stuff comes from MN… Prince, Dylan, Mystery Science Theater, the AP PIC… 🤣
Wow—that is an impressive collection you have! I cut back on and even got rid of much of my collection because “I can stream it” or “get it from the library”. I regret this choice now—I’d have to have 10 streaming services and/or order through the library systems and still not get those obscure ones. There’s a really old James Cagney movie vhs that I got rid of that I can’t even find anywhere now.
And, don’t even get me started on Northern Exposure… the only way to have the original songs from Chris in the morning is from the VHS—the DVDs put elevator music in for every unreferenced song. 🤬 For a while there, all my aunties were scouring garage sales and thrift stores for VHS’s for me. I have a lot now, though.
Nod to Gaffigan but it’s not really a dichotomy now, is it? We can do both? In recent years, been doing a lot of audiobooks in the car or doing chores and not so much “reading books”. So many good books not made into movies yet, too … Recently read The Road to Tender Hearts and ❤️ed it. What a hoot.
Y’all are speaking my language. I’ve been a self proclaimed TV junkie since Sesame Street debuted a year after I was born. PBS addict shortly thereafter. Mom quickly tired of me critiquing her cooking with, “Julia Child doesn’t do it that way.”
I too still have tons of VHS tapes, DVDs, and hundreds of hours of DVR recordings of my favorite shows and movies. I am currently trying to figure out how to best whittle down my $247.94 monthly TV and streaming subscriptions to a more reasonable amount for a retiree without losing access to any of my fixes. It isn’t going well. 🙄 ❤️📺
Christine, we were going the way of streaming is the future. But the utopian ideal of having everything accessible to stream was shattered early on when Amazon claimed there was fraud on our account and just shut it down and told us to open a new one. We lost maybe 10 movies, which wasn’t cool. But what really converted me back to physical media was the frustration my wife experienced having to spend hours talking to multiple people so she could get her substantial Audibles collection back: a large investment in hundreds of titles wiped out with a simple keystroke at some call center. She eventually got her Audibles account reinstated and books back. But it was that that made me realize we didn’t actually ‘own’ any of the digital stuff we bought. Plus I didn’t want to give Amazon any more money after that. From then on DVDs have been part of my thrifting habit, eventually outpacing my search for board games.
Since the Amazon debacle, other issues have come up that have sustained our decision to go with physical media. Censorship, like you mentioned, has cropped up on many streaming services. Some titles just never make it to streaming, especially old stuff. And a lot of times the streaming services don’t own a lot of their content, they license it. So titles bounce from platform to platform, and personal ownership of titles, on a site like Amazon, might only last as long as their license.
What was the James Cagney movie?
I just happened to have watched Jimmy the Gent (1934) that I borrowed from our library system. The movie was a bit uneven in its pacing. But Cagney’s was the standout performance that made it worth watching.
Kim, being a Sesame Street child you’re a young retiree. 😁
I too was a young TV junkie. For a time I stayed home from school. Supposedly I was sick. But I remember that time as pretending to be sick to avoid school.
I would watch a lot of the daytime game shows. I would even put masking tape on the TV so I could play along with word-based games.
I have an affinity for and personal understanding of Chance the gardener from Being There. 😁
Mike S, yes, I was lucky enough to retire at 56 a couple years ago. I had planned on working much longer, but circumstances allowed it and I took advantage.
I also used to feign illnesses as a kid to avoid the dreaded school so I could watch TV all day. Mom enabled me because she hated being home alone. I started with the morning cartoons and old reruns, then game shows, and finally the local UHF daily movie. If it was Elvis week, I could drag the illness out till Friday! TV has always been a true obsession for me.
My experience with keeping physical copies of my entertainment is also similar, although, in my case it was my 1000+ piece CD collection. I had planned on getting rid of all of them after I digitized them onto a hard drive connected to my Mac, but a few years after I finally finished, the hard drive crashed and I couldn’t recover anything. Shortly after that, my Apple Music account “lost” all those CDs that I had uploaded. I tried everything to get it back, to no avail. Luckily, I still have all the CDs stored in boxes, but have yet to upload most of them again. I was also going to donate my VHS and DVD collection, but after the CD debacle, that’s not happening! I can’t even get rid of the DirecTV subscription I have had since 2003 because of all the stuff I have on my DVR and for fear of losing access to TCM and regular TV in general. Hence, my exorbitant monthly television entertainment bill.
🐸Me, too! Sesame street and The Electric Company! There was a bill, on capitol hill … way better than going to school… 🤣
I used to have Tivo where I could easily FF over the ads.
Now, I do the same with YouTube TV. (Although, they throw in these ads that you can’t avoid by FF.)

Mike, the james cagney movie is rated poorly, but if you get it, you get it. It’s Times of our Lives.
Unless there’s a less similar title I couldn’t find, it looks like the title is ‘The Time of Your Life’.
If that’s it, good news! It’s available on DVD and on several free streaming services, many for free (with ads), including YouTube. The quality on YouTube is by no means pristine. But it’s at least VHS on a big screen TV good. I’ve definitely watched lower quality video.
Oh Mike S—You’re the one who should be called Benevolent! I gave up looking quite a few years ago … looks like if I use the yout-ube trick, it’ll be golden. 😊

I thought I had ‘ctbs’ figured out, but was baffled by ‘(iezm)’.
In hindsight, contextually my ‘ctbs’ made little sense. Not to mention how it didn’t fit the politeness of kralc, nor anyone else in this forum. 😁

Oh my garsh and heavens to betsy … I’m feeling all kinds of verklemptitude and will try to live up to my moniker… PIC that has a nice ring to it I reckon.
PS I legit was voted “life of the party” freshman year of our 10 story dorm. Hence my undergraduate gpa.
The OG list was 2315 words minus the 6 words they removed initially when NYT purchased the game.
The “Answer” List includes the 2309 words (can you even play the 6 taboo words? I haven’t tried) plus exactly 10657 (what I call “playable” words). Maybe, “playable” is better, because most of these words will not be the “answer”. So, the “playable” list would be the sum of these word sets which gives you 12972 words (which includes the 6 taboo words). If you subtract those, then it’s 12966 words.
The “answer” list is ever changing since they have essentially removed 26 words in total from the 2315 OG (Original Game?) list. (I keep saying “Original Gangsta” in my head, because the comic is always there.)
Then, there’s the ADD’s. I have identified 653 total ADD’s based on the WB (Weighted Bottles / Wordle Bot) scores of 37% or greater. 56 of those have been played thus far. This leaves 597 ADD’s left.
Every single ADD is on the 10657 “playable” word list.
Every single ADD has a WB score of 40% or greater. (The lowest one being PSHAW 40%)
It remains to be seen if words 37%-40% will ever get played like METRE.
There’s a HUGE tier drop below 37% getting rapidly into scores of 2% or less.
Words like B__CH, P___Y, P___S aren’t even listed! LOL. (Why? They go too far!)
So, you could say the “answer” list (AL) is 2309 + 653 = 2962 potentially if they add all the ADD’s.
Thanks for the clarifications. I’ll incorporate those. I thought the playable list was a superset since answers are “playable” but wasn’t sure.
It’s hard to know “for sure” without looking at the code (which neither of us will do for obvious reasons.), but these lists exist in GitHub for a reason.
All the developers of Wordle “help” tools use these lists.
This could be why they decided not to encrypt all this information.
🙋🏻♀️ wordle🤖 says 3,209 words in its list .. does that figure in anywhere?

STEAL, YONIC left 12 possible. 8 were used, some quite long ago. Unused options were DRYLY, DULLY, LYMPH, WRYLY. The first option was a good filter, and happened to be correct.
Wordle 1,909 3/6
🟨⬜⬜⬜⬜ RAISE
⬜🟩⬜⬜🟩 CRONY
🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 DRYLY
RAISE leaves 23 unplayed OG words.
It also leaves about 17 ADDs, but my second word isn’t based on those.
I might mix in the unrepeated 236 puzzles to this new list also (which I have to check because there were days with 2 answers in a day.)
CRONY is still the best filter giving me a 3 in about 1/2 the cases unless its a REPEAT or ADD.
So, CRONY left DRYLY and WRYLY. There is also PROXY #213.
CRONY ruled out all the ADDs!
So with the two rhyming words, I had to pick one of them to guarantee a 4 (if it wasn’t a 3).
I went with the more common letter “D”. I didn’t see any trends on D or W to sway me away from DRYLY.
I wonder if anyone guessed PROXY today.

https://www.fiveforks.com/wordle/tips/#after-party
Jeb,
I can’t post on the General Feedback link. Why?
What I wanted to say is that the reason there has been a prolonged dearth of “repeat words” is that the NYT is taking words out of the expanded allowable guess (but not acceptable answer) pool and adding them to their acceptable pool. Since BLOOD on 8/29 the words USURY, RITZY, PEEVE and STREW have become acceptable correct answers.
I have induced a “remaining letter frequency” chart using your used letters and subtracting them from the Word Finder/Wordle totals for each eligible correct answer by letter and position. They also show total of non-answer words which have decreased by 4 as the 4 acceptable words were moved into the acceptable answer pool.
I know you don’t chart “future information” but this should interest your fans who do.
Regards,
Don N.
If you REALLY want to know (based on future information), this is the site
https://wordletools.azurewebsites.net/CheckWordListsForChanges
If you don’t want to know, don’t click on this link.
BTW, this wont tell you the answers. It will just tell you how many REPEATs and ADDs are coming in the next 30-40 days.
=============================================
The long term average on REPEATs is 10.0%.
The long term average on ADDs is 11.4%
The upcoming average for REPEATs is a bit higher than 10%.
The upcoming average for ADDs is multiple times higher than long run average for REPEATs.
So, I don’t think the ADDs are having an effect on the REPEAT rate.
In fact, the ADD rate might be ticking up slightly.
We’ll see once we get deeper into October.
Thanks for the intel JD… I’ve been avoiding clicking on this link worried about seeing “under the hood” and you have validated my fears. Now I know. That website has a lot of cool tools & lists (WB) though I have been cautious. They really should put a spoiler alert because the terminology they use isn’t always clear.
JD,
Thank you for your thoughful comment. I never knew such a site existed. I stand gratefully corrected.
Don N.
To be honest, I wish NYT would encrypt their code; so, people couldn’t see their plans.
I would probably play the game the same way, but I would have just found a different word list to work from. Somebody would have come up with one and published it certainly!
Agreed.
I am slightly confused how to interpret that page. Is each “Added” line indicating that they’ve checked what the solution will be on that day, with “Duplicates” being the total cumulative number of repeats by the latest date they listed? Is “Unexpected solutions” the ADDs?
To be honest, that confuses me too.
I take it to mean that they detect that NYT made an entry for the puzzles on that day, but it doesn’t affect the official count of either ADD’s or REPEAT’s.
Perhaps, all they are doing is reserving solution spaces for those days, but there are no answers for those dates yet.
I use that page only for the last official date (which is above that list of entries).
There are separate pages for both ADDs and REPEATs.
If you divide the ADDs and the REPEATs by the number of days out, you get the % for both (but only for the next month).
Wordle Tools is tracking both.
BTW, I am assuming they tack answers onto the end of the list, but technically they don’t have to. They could put them anywhere they want.
Thanks for the heads up Don. Thinking of the daily After Party posts, I invoked a setting to “lock up old posts” after 14 days and forgot that General Feedback is basically a very old post with tons of comments. So I just removed that setting.
And to clarify, I don’t publish future-ish related information on the main lists, in effect, because I *only* post past answers and that’s all. The After Party is Mad Maxian where people use all kinds of tools.
Dude, those movies were cool.

Did anyone notice the MAX PARTY count (164) for JOIST? It was in part fueled by a long thread kicked off with JD’s two-fer, which was great for a J word.
I rate each party the next day when adding the answer with an emoji count:
25+ = 1
50+ = 2
75+ = 3
100+ = 4
I probably need to upgrade those counts. Our parties have gotten bigger.
🙋♂️
do/can you track a subcategory for thread length? kinda curious how those rank. definitely been a few active 🌋 ones. 😎
I think when I post a word list, it blows that stat out of the CREEK!
I also have an itty bitty problem with verbosity… 🙄 I would join a support group for it, but… 🥁 I’ve heard the meetings go on forever …
DILLY DILLY to that!

We often run outta threads, they go so deep… can ewe adjust for more or are we maxed out?
It is set to 5 levels for two reasons: 1) phone screen width and 2) maintaining sanity.
One trick is to go “up level” to the person you want to reply to and hang a reply off that.
As Emily Litella (played by the late great Gilda Radner) was oft known to say:
“Never mind.”
Ah, Emily Litella.
“What!? … Get fudge?”
I’ve mentally worked this idea before. It would involve an SQL dump of the comments table, some parsing, and an Excel pivot table.
Or all of these pattern watchers here can just say “oh, we know.”
*** if i remember correctly, you intentionally only show new post counts on the last few days (is it 5?) to keep the after party addicts from “obsessing”? Or sumptin’ like dat.
🙋🏼♀️ TBH, Maybe, well perhaps, i don’t know, 30 (thirty) days would be better??? … my humble thought, that is if it’s even possible…🧎🏻♀️☺️
You remember well. I had to check the code. Last 7 days. The After Party shows 14 days by default, although only 13 only show once “tomorrow” goes live for the folk down under. Either way only last 7 days display the red “new” counts.
🤓🤷♂️ ahhh, well, sounds relatively tedious an’ pretty granular an’ most likely, round these here parts, “ain’t nobody got time for that!”

🤔 also kinda curious what the daily tribe average is. since we don’t all post that info in a consistent manner (as in very unstructured data) it would be a tricky bugger to cull and process automagically. 🤷♂️ i ‘spose a simple solution would be to have the tribe be sure to include the “wordle” banner with score in their post if they want theirs to be tallied.

🤔 re: “I probably need to upgrade those counts. Our parties have gotten bigger.”
🏴☠️🗡️⚔️🦜 aye, methinks ur gonna need a bigger boat…’n more rum!
🚙 🚗 … just looked… that party should be renamed “CarHenge” … we went pretty crazy that day. One just never knows what cool, weird, or obscure direction the discussion will go at the 🥳 after party …
… The Claw, PeeWee Herman, Prince-Let’s Go Crazy!, Blaze Glory, Hammer House of Horror, CarHenge, the battle over the repeat odds …

Repeat leads. Nope. But good filter pair.
Now 17 days since last.
I have it as tomorrow will be the 17th day since CLICK.
So, if the 18-sided die theory is correct (which is probably isn’t), then the REPEAT should happen tomorrow or the next day.
🙋♂️
click, click, click…uhhh…would you mind repeating that? those of us in the cheap seats are having a difficult time reading you. 📖🤷♂️🤓😉
Only a couple of CLICKs left! Then BOOM!

I was so sure I solved it with DULLY! I was also surprised it was an OG word.
Ah well.
Why?
Because Dryly hadn’t occurred to me. I was not using the OG list.
Oh I see. You checked the list after you played.

Prof. Mike’s Word of the Week; EARST chosen by Richard (Maryland)
ROILY exceeded my expectations: placed the R in position 2 and supplied the LY ending. U did not work in position 3, so Y had to be a full-time vowel today. The solution could have been WRYLY: I would have been just as happy with a fourfer.
Good ☀️/🌃 to all!

I think you had 4 NUs after your 2nd guess. Why did you pick dryly? Gut? lucky?…
it was the first word that occurred to me and it hadnt been used. i only check here to see if a guess i noticed has already been used. i dont keep a list of unused words so i really have no idea what other ones were reasonable or better to guess
I like your grid art interpretation!

I actually thought that DRYLY was the only possible solution. DULLY didn’t enter my mind at all, probably because I never use that word. Not even sure how it’s pronounced (duh-lee or dull-lee)
I think it’s pronounced dull-lee.
That’s a little hard to say out loud, lol
