    3. Mike: I added a “Next Update” time at the bottom of the Country State count table. The time is supposed to show in your local time, no more than 5 minutes away (which is the refresh cycle.) Can you confirm this is working for you in Pacific Time? Thanks!

      1. Jeb, it seems to be working.

My phone was at 9:27 and the ‘Next Update’ time was 9:32.

      2. Checked back at 9:30 and it still says 9:32. 👍

      3. Watched it during 9:32. About 5-10 seconds in the screen refreshed while I watched it, and the ‘Next Update’ time switched to 9:37. … Also it says AM. So, seems good all around frow what I can see.

      1. Hi there! Looks like you are in Italy. Can you do a test for me?

I added a “Next Update” time at the bottom of the Country State count table at the top of the Lists and After Party page. The time is supposed to show in your local time, no more than 5 minutes away (which is the refresh cycle.) Can you confirm this is working for you in your local time? Thanks!

        1. Hi there! Avatar

Hi Jeb, hope I’m doing this right. It’s 9:40 PM on 9/6 in Milan, Italy w this reply post.

        2. Hi there! Avatar

Jeb, I see no “Next Update” time at the top of the Main List or top of the After Party page. It’s now 9:55 PM on 9/6 here.

          1. Based on the cell phone view:

On the After Party page, just above the list of days, there is a count of how many people are on Five Forks (or just on the After Party pages).

If you tap the information circle at the end the line it opens a window with the ‘Next Update’ time at the bottom.

          2. Thanks Mike for clarifying. Sorry I wasn’t clear on how to click on the pop up table, but that’s where the “Next Update” is.

          3. Hi there! Avatar

Thanks Mike S., found the Next Update time and it matches my local time here in Italy. Jeb, outside of the breakdown of “US:(States)” only 4 countries are listed: Australia, Canada, Great Britain and Thailand…if any of that matters.

PS Mike S – picked up some SCOPA cards! And have the Sea Salt and Paper game being sent to us.

          4. Hi there! Avatar

And one more thing to note, Jeb. The time is posting correctly 6:09 AM but it’s not ET as shown, obviously. It’s 6:09 AM CEST.

          5. Cool! Hopefully they were good recommendations for you and family.

Wishing you the best of travels.

          6. Thanks for testing. And yeah there are ebs and flows on how many countries have Wordlers on the site throughout the 24 hours. The major activity seems to happen around the local morning hours. Wordle and Coffee!

Also, thanks for the heads up on ET. That’s left over first draft. Since it is localized time now, don’t need to report time zone.

        3. Hi there! Avatar

Ok, I see now that the list of countries and states is dynamic based on who’s on at the moment.

The best WORDLE starting word is 🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩SATED🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 and I challenge you to discover better starting words!!

Below is my analysis in an attempt to find the best WORDLE opening word, based on the 3221 words on expanded list of possible solutions.
The table shows the top nine (of 26) rows sorted by highest prevalence for positions 1 to 5 of the WORDLE words (Columns 1-5)

Each column is divided in three: the letter, the number occurrence (#) and the percentage (%) and sorted by highest prevalence per position for each column:

        Yikes… me 👁️s hurt…

You are right—SATED is the best option today, as long as you don’t figure in groups or entropy and as long as you’re considering all possible wordlebot words as possible starters.

If you only consider OG words as starting words, RAISE is the best starting words.

If you consider everything, TREAD was supposedly today’s best starting word.

What I can’t figure out, why does the NYT Bot continue to use SLATE? It doesn’t rank even in the top 10. 🤷‍♀️

        1. 🥸 Christine the Benevolent Slater in EZ Mode Avatar
🥸 Christine the Benevolent Slater in EZ Mode

Wordle tools has a starter word analysis tool. We are not allowed to post the link here it seems.

          1. You can post any links you would like. There are no tool rules in the After Party. I just have to be careful on the main list pages about any today or future information appearing.

          2. 🥸 Christine the Benevolent Slater in EZ Mode Avatar
🥸 Christine the Benevolent Slater in EZ Mode

I’ve tried 5 times and it didn’t post. But, the minute I removed the link, it posted just fine. That’s alright, no biggie. 🤷‍♀️ As far as i know, it’s Apple products—the last year or so of updates have ruined apple products IMHO.

        2. RAISE is best considering “unplayed” OG words. (The basis of my analysis).

If you had to consider ALL OG words, then it is ROATE. (Many websites are dedicated to that analysis.)

Since, the unplayed OG words are being played at a 50% rate, and the unplayed ADD words are being played at a 39.5% rate (leaving 10.5% for the REPEATED OG words).

This is why my focus was on unplayed OG words, but that was schemed when the ADD rate was closer to %10 (or less).

They haven’t repeated an “ADD” yet. This is probably because ADDs were introduced by NYT. The first one was GUANO at #646. So, well beyond puzzle #236.

So, what I was thinking of was adding the unplayed ADDs (with WB% greater than 37-40%) to the pool and seeing what the spreadsheet says. (The spreadsheet formula is still in tact, I just need to add the words to the list and it would update automatically).

Part of the problem is deciding where the official cutoff is for WB% scores. PSHAW is 40%.

Then, that would (possibly) produce a new start word based on that data, but I would still prioritize answers from the OG list since they have a %10 implied edge and there are far fewer of them.

I still prefer finding words that match more letters in the wrong position (yellow score) rather than getting fewer matches of letters in the correct position (green score).

It’s generally better to get one letter in the wrong position than to get no matches at all.

If you can get the largest pool of words from the worst pattern (which is usually matching nothing) to be comparatively smaller than the next best start word, I think that is the measuring stick.

RAISE’s worst pattern is an I in the wrong position which leaves 38 words. ROATE’s worst pattern was matching no letters at all. That used to leave me with about 60 words.

Adding the unplayed ADDs will add 598 words to a list that only has 457 words left. This more than doubles that list! Only 55 words have been played from that list.

          1. I did the analysis.

So, based on the unplayed OG and ADD’s (37+%),

AROSE does give you the best yellow score (1789).
The green score is only 428.

      3. Most formatting will be lost as WordPress tends to strip things down to just text. No tabs. No columns. But your PIPE and semi-colon characters are a good text-only way to share column data.

I asked Google AI to take a stab at converting your text table to HTML:

        0 1 # % 2 # % 3 # % 4 # % 5 # %

    4. Very interesting analysis! I think this is probably the best analysis a human could do by hand, though bots might be able to find starting words that result in a slightly better average by considering other things like words remaining (and the odds of repeat vs. unused words being the answer), groups, entropy, etc.

    ⬜⬜🟩⬜🟩 UTILE

RAISE leaves only ELIDE, OVINE and UTILE.

UTILE shares the L in ELIDE so I went with that.

No L; so, it’s OVINE, right? Wrong again.

    What’s left? BEIGE 58%, CHIDE #1691 and CHIME #839.

  15. @JD and @Ez,

I’ve seen the statistical light. JD once said because of the roughly 1 in 10 use of repeats, on any given day you are better off guessing a new word over a repeat. Ez calculated stats on any “since repeat” count and it clicked.

I saw that while after 10 days of no repeat, for example, it is true the odds are increasing for the next several days, but until maybe day 16 or 17, the odds still favor a new guess on any given day.

SO… I removed the LOW / MEDIUM / HIGH repeat warning off the main lists and am just showing a day count with a highlight color, so as not to be too misleading on odds.

For me, I start using repeats when I really like them as a filter and as a possible solve as the no-repeat days grow. I also find that entertaining when using the Five Forks filter.

Thanks for all the math! Wordle on Garth…

    1. Glad to hear it.

I think you made the right decision.

      ===========================
BTW, I was thinking about the 20-sided die theory.

If that it is the way they are doing it (picking a number from 1 to 20), then definitively, there has to be a REPEAT no later than day 20 after the last REPEAT.

However, the math is wrong on that. The average number of days between REPEATS would be 10.5 and that is only 9.5%.

The long term average is 10.5%.

So, what works is picking a number between 1 and 18. That would result in a 10.5% that we’re seeing.

If that were true, I don’t know that it is. Then, on day 18 post previous REPEAT, then there would be a 100% chance of a REPEAT. Day 17 would be a 50% chance. Day 16 would be a 33% chance. and so on (working backwards from Day 18).

So, not knowing what they are actually doing, it would be interesting to see if we ever go over an 18 day count post REPEAT.

      1. That is a good point!

Also, one thing I worry about is that perhaps it is being determined solely by Tracy’s whims, which could change over time and render all our statistics moot!

        1. Right, that is a risk. In theory, they could “insert” a word (REPEAT or ADD) into the list for tomorrow or 2 days from now and we wouldn’t know the difference.

The theory would hold if they are simply “tacking” words onto the end of a 30-40 day queue. Studying the count on Wordle Tools, that is approximately how far out they plan.

It seems that they let it go down to 30 words and then add about 8-10 more. (Presumably on the end of the list, but we don’t really know for sure. I think the Wordle Tools’ people actually know, because they are looking directly at the code and actually know what the words are.)

The amount of data we have to go on is still limited. So, this is all speculation.

        2. Digging into this, Tracy describes how future (new) answers are being randomly generated for 30 days. But they have weekly meetings to tweak the next week’s list if needed. My sense is this is when the repeats get slipped in. “Want to slip one in this week or next week?” Someone who knows math is keeping the decisions within a roughly 10% repeat goal.

Just guessing but the ADDS may go into the random select pool with the remaining news.

That’s how corporate weekly meetings worked in my long Dilbert corporate career.

          1. Interesting.

So, it is entirely possible that they could put any word in on any day. (not simply just adding words to the end of the list)

So, all bets are off in regard to us trying to predict anything.

          2. That is a good find! Where did you see this info?

        3. I was using Google A.I. to research Wordle list process. This was one of the more interesting glimpses. This was before repeats and adds:

    3. Glad we could be of assistance! It definitely was not obvious without looking at the specific statistics, so I don’t blame you for having the repeat warning on there initially.

Now we can stop exploding everyone’s heads with all the math, tables and graphs! For now 😉

This one took me a long time. I had to set it aside, play Spelling Bee, then go to sleep before I finally saw BEIGE. I handled the trap by making a list of possible endings that included I*E. The words I came up with were GUIDE (PU #889) and OXIDE (PU #386). When OXIDE didn’t work (and excluded GUIDE), I decided to take a break. When I woke up I finally saw BEIGE. This was a very satisfying solve. If BEIGE comes up again, I hope I’ll be ready for it.
