Wordle 1,899 3/6
⬜⬜⬜⬜⬜ Stare
⬜🟩⬜⬜🟨 Colin
🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 PoundI used Stare, Colin, which led to: Bound, Downy, Mound. Pound would have been a Repeat, but there were already 4 Repeats this month. For previously used answers: Words starting with Bo: 15; Of those, one started with Bou. For D, 14 started with Do;Of those, 2 started with Dou. For M, 26 have started with Mo; of those, 5 have started with Mou. Perhaps it was just chance, but this worked today.
Because we now have the remaining unused words from the NYT List, potential Repeats, and Adds, I’m often still looking at the top 10 letters in Wordle answers based on the NYT List
for my first 2 guesses. They are below In order from most to least frequent:* E
* A
* R
* O
* T
* L
* I
* S
* N
* C-
To be clear, that list comes from the total number of letters matched from the all 2315 words from the OG list with the letters summed together.
So, they count the P, 3 times in PUPPY.
It’s still a good list to work from.
I haven’t bothered to work it out as a sum of all 3 groups of words, because the odds are still different. See post below.
However, it would be interesting to see if it were closer to EAROT LISNC than EARSI OTLYN. The main difference being the Y replaced the C, because of the number of words remaining with Y.
-
Thanks for the interesting info!
-
-
Correction! I used Stare, Colin. Mound!

Relative ODDs of OG vs ADDs vs REPEATs.
———————————————–
OG words: There were once 2315 of these words. Now there are only 460 unplayed. Many others were removed from the list.ADDs: Wordle Bot considers 653 words which are not part of the OG list to be answers. 51 of these words have been played. That leaves 601 unplayed words from this set.
REPEATs: NYT purchased the game from Josh Wardle and played their first game on puzzle #236. With puzzle #0 being one of the games, that makes 237 probable REPEATs. All but 4 of the 23 REPEATs, came before puzzle #237. So, 19 have been repeated. This leaves 218 words in this set. We’ll regard REPEATs beyond #236 unlikely. Beyond #364 extremely unlikely!
=============================================
Base Odds of occurrence.50% OG
39.5% ADDs
10.5% REPEATs
=============================================
That makes it (roughly).0.109% per OG word.
0.066% per ADD word
0.048% per REPEAT word.
This means that each of that unplayed OG words have a 0.109% chance of being the answer.
This means that each of the ADDs have a 0.066% chance of being the answer.
This means that each of the REPEATs have a 0.048% chance of being the answer.
-
Hi JD,
Thanks also to you for the interesting statistics!
Comments by you, JD, and other players are what make the After Party so interesting and so much fun!-
You’re most welcome. I’m glad they help.
-
-
I am curious if the reason for the vast majority of the repeats being from pre-NYT is because they purposely chose that cutoff, or if a prior answer becomes more likely to be a repeat the farther away from today it is.
For example, if an unplayed OG word has an arbitrary relative likelihood of 1.0, I could imagine them saying something like: all answers >5 years old have a likelihood of 0.95, answers 4–5 years old have a likelihood of 0.5, etc.
Time will tell.
-
I think the reasoning is clear (for now).
Most of us weren’t playing (or even heard of) Wordle before NYT took it over. Unless you played the archive games, you probably didn’t play the games #0 to #236.
So, for almost all of us, those games were new. We only know that these are REPEATs, because we use the Five Forks site.
Once most of those words have been played, I can see them changing their scheme to something like you described.
I think it’s much more likely that they exhaust all the OG words, REPEATs and most of the ADDs (that TB likes). Then, they throw all that back into the “pot” and start over. That day will likely be announced by NYT.
Then, I wonder if they will put the entire set on “random” instead of curating the list.

MOUND
Apparently the M was most needed today.
I used 103 guesses in August for an average of 3.32, 0.1 better than July! Midway I changed starter to STEAL, from ASTER, it’s hard to give up that R. But it seems, the L is working too.

2-142
3-654

6-51-
Do you calculate your all time average with the losses?
I gave myself a “7” for a loss (which is somewhat presumptuous, but I give myself the benefit of the doubt).
-
All time ‘win’ average, also I was told that TASER is a brand name and unlikely ever the answer.
-
Understood.
TASER has a WB score of 51%. So, it makes it more likely than PSHAW 40%, but less likely than ASTER 54%.
So, eventually, both could be played with slightly better ODDs than ASTER.
You are correct that TASER is a trademarked name, but like XEROX, it has become a word. (Incidentally, XEROX WB score is not listed; so, that will never occur. Probably because of the XX.)
When your product name has become the “word”, you’ve won the marketing game! Think of Band-Aid.
-
for better odds in favor of ASTER.
-
-
Yah, if STEAL gets picked, I’ll go back to ASTER, unless it’s used first, then I’ll be soooo saaad,
my winning one was STARE.-
Good luck. I hope the one you choose is the ACE!
-
-
-
-
3.32 is an amazing average!
Why did you settle on ASTER rather than TASER?
ASTER does have a better WB score, but it’s positional score is not as good.
Both are good start words.

-
I don’t think much of anything is arbitrary in these answers.
If all the REPEATs were under #237, then more people would know what they’re up to. They want to leave open the “possibility” for any word.
If they start repeating the REPEATs, then they’ve crossed another line.

Hi, Jeb,
Good trap escape! FF was very helpful today!
I noticed your breakdown of where Wordlers reside, by country and in the US by state.
Yesterday it seemed to be for After Party commenters and today for Wordle Review comments.
Did you post about this already? I found it very interesting. Thanks for the new
info.-
The counts come from Google Analytics’ Real Time stats. It is something I see behind the scenes and thought people would like to share, so I found some code and tweaked it.
The counts represent everyone currently visiting http://www.fiveforks.com– any page. That is by far the main lists page followed by the block format page as distant second. The After Party activity comes in third, but the counts are all lumped together.
It’s interesting to watch countries (and US states) come and go as the world turns.

Mike S, I hereby grant you an honorary Peak Integrity Trophy. May the Wordle gods reward your sacrifice in September! 🫡🏆
-
You would have appreciated me holding up my hand to block the body of the After Party because I needed to tweak “tomorrow’s” page, and I saw there would already be 3 posts there. 🙈
I do this often. Of course you have to know you are heading into the future….
-
Two or three times I had accidental future-peek spoils. When that happened, I did a mental drill of playing as I *most likely* would have. One time I got a 5! 🙉

Well gosh, if Mike got a trophy, Jeb “YOU GET A CAR!” for the sacrifices you make for the After Party. 🌎to Oprah, help us out here.
-
I’ve done that in the past, back when my wife played Wordle. A few times I caught a glimpse of her phone mid-puzzle, and knowing her start word, GHOST, I would have some clues, especially considering my start word was HASTE at the time. I’d do my best to play as if I hadn’t seen what I saw.
But I don’t play completely predictably with each letter pattern. So it was hard to recreate what I’d do imagining I didn’t know what I knew.
Anyway, I ‘guessed’:
TREAD — of course
FLUID — I’d used it recently
MOUNDI gave myself a 3 and moved on with my day. This was at least a possible scenario. I’m pretty sure I would have chosen M- over B-. I didn’t even look at any other possibilities.

Arose wasn’t always my thing. I don’t even remember what I started with but for a long time I tried either raise or arise. Then I decided that the o was more useful than the i so I switched to arose. Now I can’t leave it because I am certain that the one time I start with another word it will finally be arose’s turn to be the winner!
But it has served me well. -
I made the initial list of characters in Jeb’s list, but completely overlooked in Christine’s QUERY
-
Charles—I had added “build character cast” to Jeb’s original query—AI is notoriously & maddeningly needing correction … I just went back and asked specifically for you to be added back in!!!!
Charles — The Quiet Validator: Steady, thoughtful, and supportive; notices interesting solves and gives the “I see what you did there” response without needing to dominate the conversation.
-
-
went back to AI and added “give me a list of all the other regular characters you missed”:
Here are the other regulars I mentioned but left out of the short cast list:
Judy L — The Steady Regular: Low-key, thoughtful, and reliably part of the daily conversation; brings her own solving perspective without needing to make a big production of it.
Paul — The Reliable Regular: Consistent presence with straightforward solves and observations; part of the dependable core of the daily conversation.
Donna Schmidt — The Grid-Art Appreciator: Particularly engaged with the visual/jokey side of the After Party and quick to contribute to the communal interpretation of grids.
Elaine — The Quiet Contributor: A regular presence who adds her own solves and observations without needing to take center stage.
Fran B — The Friendly Regular: Consistently joins the daily conversation, offering solves, reactions, and encouragement.
Linda — The Steady Contributor: Another familiar face in the daily mix; straightforward, engaged, and part of the community’s dependable background presence.
Hi there! — The Cheerful Regular: Brings a friendly, upbeat presence and participates in the daily give-and-take.
Teelee — The Word Nerd: Likes digging into word possibilities and odd linguistic questions; happy to jump into the more technical wordplay.
-
Pretty cool these lists of characters!
-
Kinda sorta nailed it with me, hahaha
-
That was nice of you to flesh out the regulars!
-
I hate it when people are left out! And, if chatgpt still left anybody out, lemme know.
Jeb… I have furthered the experiment in chatgpt and we now have the makings of an After Party television sitcom with assigned actors, a plot, props, and characters defined.
