CAPON was the first word that came to me after CRONY. CONGA eluded me. The other four words were PU (CONDO, CONIC, CANON, CONCH), unlikely to follow yesterday’s repeat.

    —-

Regarding the repeat odds, I was skeptical that the odds increase as the days since last repeat increases (as opposed to being constant odds each day), as implied by FF. But, running a logistical regression, I believe you are correct, Jeb, though your threshold of what constitutes “high” might be off. Here are the repeat odds at each day calculated from the regression model:

    Day 1 2.4%
    Day 2 3.1%
    Day 3 3.8%
    Day 4 4.8%
    Day 5 6.0%
    Day 6 7.4%
    Day 7 9.2%
    Day 8 11.3%
    Day 9 13.9%
    Day 10 16.9%
    Day 11 20.5%
    Day 12 24.5%
    Day 13 29.1%
    Day 14 34.1%
    Day 15 39.6%
    Day 16 45.3%
    Day 17 51.1%
    Day 18 56.9%

    1. Above are the individual odds for each particular day, but if you are wondering about the CUMULATIVE probability of there being a repeat by day X:

      Day 1 2.40%
      Day 2 5.40%
      Day 3 9.00%
      Day 4 13.40%
      Day 5 18.60%
      Day 6 24.60%
      Day 7 31.60%
      Day 8 39.30%
      Day 9 47.80%
      Day 10 56.60%
      Day 11 65.50%
      Day 12 74.00%
      Day 13 81.50%
      Day 14 87.80%
      Day 15 92.70%
      Day 16 96.00%
      Day 17 98.00%
      Day 18 99.20%

      1. This looks more accurate based on the %55 at day 10.

IMHO, I don’t think people should prematurely guess REPEATs if there unplayed common words available to play (unless it’s the best filter or burner word. I actually had to do that today.)

I’ve noticed that on these more “difficult” answers, like ♻️ and ➕, the scores of my friends—who don’t do any analysis or even check FF—are usually better than mine. It makes sense, if you think about it.

    2. This is a true statement.

I think it’s true for me, because I sell out for the 2315 words first as a strategy. This usually works out, but not on days like today.

I’ve also encountered situations where multiple First Year REPEATs or ADDs (with WB values over 40%) are possibilities, and it isn’t clear which one should be the answer.

Today, I had a choice between NACHO and CAPON.

Yesterday, it was FLICK and CLICK.

      I chose incorrectly both times.

If it takes me 3 words to eliminate all 2315 words, and 2 guesses to get the ADD or REPEAT, the result can be a 5 like it was for me.

    ⬜🟩⬜⬜⬜ RAISE
    ⬜🟩🟨⬜⬜ TANGY
    ⬜🟩⬜🟨⬜ FAUNA
    🟨🟩🟨⬜🟨 NACHO
    🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 CAPON

Well, I’m not happy with this result. 2nd 5 in a row. Yuck!

RAISE leaves 15 possible words on the OG list.

I had to redo the list, because it predates the discovery of Weighted Bottles. I took 5 words off.

Even with that, no words in the list are good filters. So, I constructed the best filter of the most common letters. Y, N, G, T. There are also a few AA’s.

So TANGY(209). The fact that it’s a first year REPEAT is coincidence.

TANGY leaves only FAUNA except that wasn’t correct.

So, now I have to research this one, because it’s an ADD or a REPEAT.

    Possibles: NABOB (48%), NACHO(56%), CAPON(55%), BACON(#911)

BACON is not in the first year.

NACHO and CAPON have the best WB scores.

I like NACHOs; so, I went for that.

    Wrong again JD!

      1. Don’t touch that brit! Nacho cheese!

I would love a run of 5X 2’s. I’ll certainly try for it.

Seriously, If the ADD rate is this high, I may have to mix the ADD’s into my 2315 unplayed list. or at least make a separate sublist, but consider guess #2 based on all possiblities.

I haven’t checked to see yet whether the ADD rate ticked down today. (from %40 which is already pretty high!)

        1. 🥸 Christine the Benevolent Slater in EZ Mode Avatar
🥸 Christine the Benevolent Slater in EZ Mode

Wait… don’t touch that brit?🇬🇧💂🏻‍♂️ ‘splain—that went over my head.

🤖 says 3,371 words in its dictionary. Is this the list you use on your 2nd guess of “all possibilities” or do you have a different list?

I’ve been inconsistently adding potential ADDs to a separate janky list, but it’s only a few hundred words so far. Is the 3,371 list even available?

          1. Brit is a cheese. (This is the sign of a bad joke. Especially true, if you have to explain it).

I am not sure where Bot get’s it’s 3371 words. My guess is that it’s what is currently on the WB list.

This is NOT the list I use. My list is strictly unplayed 2315 words for now.

The theory is that if the chances are higher that it’s a 2315 word, then I consider those words first, before REPEATs or ADDs.

However, it appears that if the odds are only marginally higher. Then, I have to reconsider my strategy.

This might also result in a new start word, because I have to reanalyze the letter count (again). It wouldn’t shock me if I returned to ROATE.

            What is a “janky list”?

          2. 🥸 Christine the Benevolent Slater in EZ Mode Avatar
🥸 Christine the Benevolent Slater in EZ Mode

… my list is janky because it’s out of order, not complete, pieced together, and unknown if even the words on it are possible adds. Just words I’ve thrown in a list over the last few years from time-to-time.

It’s been a long time since I’ve lived in England so I don’t remember “brit” but now that you’ve explained it, your joke is really quite funny and not even in a 🌽y way. If you wanted to stay with a British cheese, it could be cheddar or stilton. Just sayin’ 🤣 🧀 PS Swiss would have been equally confusing as would be American.

          4. So, I went out to: https://wordletools.azurewebsites.net/weightedbottles?SortOrder=Alphabetical&submit=Submit

and repasted the list into my Weighted Bottle tab.

            There are 3209 entries.

How many words did Mr. Bot say he had?

          5. It occurs to me that I spelled “brie” wrong now.

I haven’t lived in England since 1969. I was very young.

          6. OK. 3371.

            So, 3371 – 3209 = 162.

            What are these 162 words???

          7. OK, I asked Gemini this one.

3209 is the Wordle Bot dictionary length.

3371 is the Scoredle dictionary length.

Are you sure you’re not getting the word count from Scoredle?

It would still be interesting to know what these 162 words are. In order to get that, I must obtain the Scoredle dictionary. I think these words are less likely to be the answer though (whatever they are!)

IKR – started with my printer not working, and on it went, got parked in at the Resthome, delays, missing tools, missing clothes, etc, etc, etc. Couldn’t wait to get home in the evening – bought some take-away, hoping to crash on the couch and watch The Chase on TVNZ+ (an hour later screening) at 6pm
found washing on the line Id forgotten about, and had to take in – AND more importantly – a mother duck standing by the deep, covered, overflow drain behind my place – eyeballing me, accompanied by a persistent echoic cheeping
Oh No !! – Id had to do a rescue twice before – but there were 7 (that I could see)…. beyond my capabilities in fading light….
so 📞 and within 10 minutes there were 4 lovely firemen to the rescue. An hour later, 9 ducklings reunited with mama duck, I had my cold takeaway & came upstairs to do my wordle. Yay 😊

arose left me w/ 9 NU. Tonal looked like the best for eliminating options but I liked tango better as a possible winner. As it turned out, tonal would also have given me capon.

    Today’s moral: never second-guess!

(I explained why I start with “tears” in yesterday’s forum. A couple of you gave me excellent suggestions for anagramatic alternatives. But I’m very set in my ways so I haven’t changed yet!)

For the second word, if the first word only landed me a vowel, I like to use a word that contains C and P. If the letter I have is an A, I’ve been using CAPON. But did I plug it in? No, because then I thought of CAMPY, so I checked to see if it had been used. It had not. And for whatever reason, I decided CAMPY was more likely than CAPON. 😢
