😎 greetings y’all! back in the saddle! giddyup!
just wrapping up a hiatus from the game starting with a camping trip with no cell coverage. gotta say being with a group of folks that only used their phones for taking pictures was awesome. face to face, non distracted conversation…what a concept. crazy and frightening how deeply these devices have permeated our worlds.
now that i am back playin’ i’m takin’ a different tack and goin’ old school. for the first four guesses i am wingin’ it, like i used to before discovering the “previously used” word lists. shootin’ from the hip and latchin’ on to whatever drifts by.
planning to only reach for those pu lists when heading toward the rapids of a fiver or over the falls of the dreaded six.
…and still starting out down at the creek

FLUKE was the higher-numbered of two likely reused words, and it was the wrong one.
Still, I’m never really unhappy to solve in three!
Oops, mistyped. That should be STILE, FLUKE, FLUME.
Sorry I’m so confused today. Maybe because I got home from a three week trip last night.
What I played was STILE, FLUKE, FLUME, and it was FLUME that was the lower number.
And now I AM unhappy!
Fixed! You can always add a comment – “Hey jeb can you…”
Note: FLUKE #1716 was a very high 5th year answer. All but 2 repeats have been a first year answer. (#365 or less.) SANDY and SMILE are meant to mess with us.

As you aptly pointed out to me when I played it, since it started at #0, #365 LOSER, isn’t in the first year.
Finally! That was a long, tense wait. I felt the ♻️ might contain lesser-used letters, hence my choices. I’m glad I checked FF before my third guess because I almost hit Enter on FLUKE before seeing how recently it was used.
I used to hate when my first guess resulted in a goose egg, but now I find it quite helpful.
What’s the over/under on days until the next ♻️? I wouldn’t put it past Tracy to throw out another one tomorrow or within the next few days.

One candle left on my birthday cake. 🎂
I actually think the chances are high of another REPEAT in the next few days.
She might even go back to back on this one. I wouldn’t put it past her.
The odds on an ADD are high too.
If you read my post from yesterday, she has a history of clustering the ADDs and REPEATs together. Often following an ADD with a REPEAT and vice verse or one day in between.
The straight odds over the next 41 days are %9.8 for a REPEAT (1 in 10) and %26.8 (1 in 4) for an ADD.
That said, I’m still eliminating the unplayed 2315 first as the overall odds are 2 to 1 for those words.
She doesn’t want to be predictable, but we’re going to try to predict anyway.

RAISE narrows it down to 11 words.
2 different filters to consider here. FENCE and DUNCE.
It’s hard to say whether DUNCE would have done better in this case.
FENCE at least gave me the F in the right position.
FENCE only left FUDGE on my list; so, I went for it.
FUDGE left only FAUVE an ADD no WB score, FLUKE (1716), FLUME (68) and FLUTE (1632)
So, of course, the play is the earliest REPEAT.

🥱 Tied with the 🤖 using “inefficient” guesses.
Guess 3- decided to use the filter instead of the oldest PU because the two oldest (bloke and flume) were only a few months apart. In my spreadsheet were 8 repeat options-2 from 2026.
🤔Now wondering if every used repeat has been the oldest repeat-this info is probably on FF or a JD post.🤓
The pattern on REPEATs are first year words. So, 364 or lower.
Sadly, LOSER (365) didn’t qualify; so, I ended up with a 4 on POSER day.
The best thing to do is pick the lowest number (oldest) REPEAT.
I think Jeb has it posted in his list of tips.
Oh, off by only 1 day. Jeez! Thanks for input—much appreciated!
Wouldn’t it be great if there were a page that contained all of JD’s highly informative posts?! Jeb? 😉
Yes, my JD cut and paste file is getting kinda humungous. 🤓
LOLZ On the other hand… I don’t think Jeb needs any more work added onto his plate.
Very true!
Funny you should mention that. I’ve been thinking I should get JD to host a STATS page and give him an editor login. He’d have to pass a background check to get his security clearance. 😉
I’d move the Repeat stats there, too.
Well, it was a nice idea, but since he probably won’t pass the background check, I guess we’re all stuck with the copy+paste angle.

Hah! Yes we do! 16 days is a new high.
Having worked in an office with techies most of my career, I can imagine Tracy reminding a coder: “I said within every two weeks.” And he (not she) replied: “I forgot again.”
Except that she tells the programmer what word to put in one which day. She controls it. She doesn’t leave it to Cody.
I think picking the words (and when they happen) is the part she enjoys.
Sounds like an incredibly cushy job. Once or twice a month she has to pick a new word.
I asked Gemini on this one.

Tracy Bennett’s Actual Responsibilities at the NYT1.
Associate Puzzle Editor (Crosswords)
——————————————
Bennett joined the Times puzzle team as an Associate Puzzle Editor. She is part of the core team (working alongside Will Shortz and Joel Fagliano) that reviews the 150 to 200 crossword submissions sent in by constructors every week.
Her duties here include: Filtering and vetting submitted grid layouts. Fact-checking and rewriting clues for difficulty, fairness, and voice (editing up to 80% of a constructor’s original clues). Mentoring newer crossword constructors.
2. Wordle Editor
——————–
She was named the official Wordle Editor.
In this role, she oversees the daily solution selection:
Curating the Sequence:
Scheduling answers to balance part-of-speech distributions, letter variety, and difficulty across a week.
Vetting Content: Researching alternative definitions or slang meanings to prevent offensive, insensitive, or overly obscure answers.
Managing the Candidate Pool: Adding selected new words to the expanded pool while monitoring potential controversial picks.
3. Strands Editor
———————
Expanding her portfolio across NYT Games, Bennett became the lead editor for Strands—the themed word-search game. She shapes the daily grid layouts, selects the hidden theme words, and writes the spangram clues. Wordle is actually just one portion of her broader daily job editing word games for NYT Games!
==================================
My guess is that she probably spends the least amount of time on Wordle vs. Crosswords and Strands.
I think she was hired for her crossword puzzle experience. I believe she used to create them.
The raw score for REPEATS is %9.8 over the next 41 days. (This sustains the original average rate of 1 every 10 days).
I think it’s a lot higher than that for the next 3 days, because the pattern is that she puts them out in bunches. This explains the 16 day drought.
Don’t be shocked that you see one tomorrow or Friday.
==============================================
For ADDs it’s even greater %26.8!! So, that’s an ADD every 4 days (on average).
Again she puts them out in bunches.
She has followed REPEATs with ADD’s the next day (and vice verse).
So, high probability of an ADD in the next two days as well.
She has never had a 1 or 2 day repeat. That reinforces manual placement and not random. But I think she should go back-to-back to rip off that band-aid!
I know you don’t give a crap about the ADD’s, but you have to consider the behavior of the ADD’s as well as the REPEATs because they are both incidents where she diverged from the original answer list.
Most of her entries are in clusters. This means that the entries are very close together.
She has done an ADD followed by a REPEAT a couple of times already.
The correct way to think about it is that she hasn’t done it YET!!!!!
Think about it. If the average pace is once every 10 days (on average) and she goes 18 days without a REPEAT, it stands to reason that 2 REPEATs can be bunched close together.
Am I getting through or do you just not read my responses?
P.S. I do read your responses. I even ask questions about them. We think differently about how Tracy operates. I worked in product marketing departments for 30 years and just think the NYT puzzle department is probably less scientific and more shoot-from-the-hip. And I agree the cross word puzzles have got to take more time to manage!
I apologize for that comment. I was pretty frustrated at the end of the work day.
I’m fascinated by your ADDs analysis, and agree with the correlations. I’m just as fascinated by the answer and candidate lists and really how the whole thing works.
I’m just in a camp (one of many camps) of wanting to play the game with only past information. My siblings think using a past list is “cheating” (many think that) but we all have different ways to have fun with this.
The After Party is always here to offset a crappy day… “where everybody knows your name!” (Or at least your initials.)
That explains a lot, Gemini. Wordle has become the neglected middle child of the NYT game family, clearly left with an untrained basset hound who just recycles old repeats and drops ‘gems’ like ‘GUNKY’ or ‘PSHAW’ into the grid. What’s next? ‘PUNKY’ and ‘JUNKY’ and then eventually a ‘GUNKY’ repeat? It’s literally five letters a day Tracy. My fridge does more work.
🤣
Wordle 1,867 4/6
⬛⬛⬛🟨⬛ Saner
🟨⬛🟩🟨⬛ Mould
⬛🟩🟩🟩🟩 Plume
🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 Flume
I should have checked Five Forks before trying Plume. (Meg, you’re not alone!)
This is the first time I tried looking up words in the Google books n-gram site. Plume was used far more often than Flume, Blume, or Glume.
I forgot that SANER was a word that I was considering to replace ROATE.
It has tremendous Yellow (802) and Green (333) scores.
In comparison, RAISE has a Yellow score of (840) and Green score of (267).
=============================================
The potential problem with words like SANER is the number of words ending in “ER”.
I charted this one. If you match no other letters than the ER, you are left with 14 unplayed options. BLUER, CRIER, FILER, FLIER, GIVER, LEPER, MOWER, ODDER, PURER, RIVER, RULER, TRUER, VIPER, WIDER. You would have to play a burner word to eliminate 3 or 4 of the possibilities at a time. That could result in a 4, 5 or 6.
============================================
If you can manage to match the “A”, the number goes down to 9. EATER, GAYER, GAZER, PALER, PAYER, RARER, TAKER, TAMER, WAGER.
Still a tough one to get in 3. RARER is the one that scares me the most.
=============================================
Matching the “S” gets you down to 3 words. SEWER, SHEER, STEER.
=============================================
SNEER gets you a 2.
SANER gets you a 1.
Yeah, I agree with you. I’d rather know if there’s an -E at the end rather than an -ER at the end.
Funnily enough, originally “E” in the last position was the most common last letter when the game started. E (436) and Y (372).
Now with 501 words left from the original list (not counting the 21 words NYT removed later) so actually it’s 480 words.
E (62) and Y (108).
It’s like they are deliberately holding back words ending in ”
Y” for some reason.
Not only that, but there are more words with E in the 4th position now. E4 (74) vs E5 (62). It was E4 (325), E5 (436).
So, when Ruth plays SANER, she’s playing E in the optimal position for a Green.
Not only that but R2 (56) and R5 (56) are in a dead heat. It was R2 (272) and R5 (217). So, SANER puts “R” in the optimal position also (arguably).
The problem is because S in the first position is still the most common S1 (97) and there are still 33 words that end in ER, you end up with large groups words left when you hit those green patterns.
I am confident that Ruth will be able to be able to play through that and still end up with decent scores.
She’s a good player.
You betcha. I don’t have a line on the odds for best letter placement that would update daily. The amount of information you have gathered for this game is truly mind-boggling, interesting and fun! Thank you!
My thoughts on SLATE.
Wordle Bot guesses SLATE because it is looking at the letter distribution of the original 2315 list. (Played or not).
Green Scores
===========
S is the most common starting letter. S1(366)
E is the most common last letter. E5(424)
L in the second position is the most common L2(201)
A is most common in the 2nd and 3rd positions. A2(304), A3(307).
Yellow Scores
==========
E is the most common letter in any position. E(1056)
Tiers are
EAROT, LISNC. UYDHP, MGBFK, WV, ZXQJ
SLATE has 3 tier 1 letters and 2 tier 2 letters.
=================================
By comparison ROATE (which shares the last 3 letters as SLATE) contains all 5 tier 1 letters.
So, the yellow score on ROATE is the maximum, but it’s a lower green score.
===================================
So, the result is that ROATE will match a lot more letters, but they’ll more often be in the wrong position.
===================================
However, I play differently. I don’t look at the entire 2315 list anymore. I look only at the 2315 words that haven’t been played yet.
Originally, 2309 minus 21 words that they removed later (that they didn’t announce!) So, actually 2288 words originally. This leaves only 479 words.
Why do this? REPEATs straight odds are %10. ADDs straight odds are also %10. I know I said the ADD’s odds are higher, but that’s the next 40 days and they are behind the pace of REPEATs. So, I think, she may be trying to even that out.
So, let’s assume %10 REPEATs, and %10 ADDs. which makes the math easier.
Why am I even considering these words if %80 of the answers are unplayed 2315 words? The answer is that I wouldn’t.
In craps, I would bet on a “7” roll every time, because the odds are higher. You can try for “6” or “8”, but they’re less frequent.
So, the letter frequency landscape has changed with remaining words.
Mathematical Tiers are
E // R A // S I // O L T Y // N // U // C P D // H G M // B K F W // V // Z J X Q
Significant is the shift down of O and T and the rise of S and I which is why I switched to RAISE.
RAISE gives me the maximum yellow score of the remaining words.
It’s a lower green score than SANER (and probably SLATE too, but I haven’t checked it.)
=====================================
So, before every first guess there are the same amount of words remaining. That’s 479 words.
The return pattern breaks down those 479 words into groups of words. I call them sublists.
Some lists are obviously going to be larger than others.
In some cases, a pattern only gives you one possibility (That happened yesterday for me with PURSE. I had R in the wrong position and S in the correct position. PURSE was the only answer.
In other cases, like for RAISE, an “I” in the wrong position is the worst case. That leaves 38 words in that sublist. If I match no letters at all, that sublist is only 32 words.
For SLATE, (and I had to create a new Sheet in my spreadsheet), the worst case is matching no letters at all. That sublist is 55 words.
For ROATE, matching no letters gives you a maximum sublist of 63 words.
So, measuring it by “words remaining”, SLATE is a better word than ROATE right now. But, RAISE is better than both of them.
I haven’t updated my SANER sheet in a while. It’s no match sublist is around the same 60-67 words. (It probably would be easier for me to recreate it than to update it).
Maintaining these lists are what takes up all the time.
======================================
The next thing is letter distribution and what would your second guess be?
If SLATE matches S in the correct position (and nothing else), the sublist is 16 words.
SCION, SHINY, SHOCK, SHOOK, SMOKY, SNIFF, SNOWY, SNUCK, SNUFF, SPIKY, SPOOK, SPUNK, SPURN, SQUIB, SUING, SYNOD.
Based on that, what is the best second guess?
SHOCK? SPUNK?
Presuming worst case scenario of either, how many words would be left?
SHOCK would give you SHOOK, SPOOK, SPUNK, SMOKY and SHINY in 3.
SPUNK would give you SPURN, SPOOK, SPIKY, and SNUCK in 3. Probably SHINY and SUING and maybe SQUIB too.
If you miss those words, you might be looking at a 4 (worst case probably.)
=====================================
S in the wrong position leaves you with sublist of 17 words.
BISON, BOSOM, BUSHY, DROSS, FICUS, FRISK, FUSSY, HUMUS, HUSKY, HUSSY, MISSY, MUCUS, MUSKY, PUSHY, RISKY, VIRUS, WISPY.
What would your guess be for that one?
That’s a tough one. 3 B words, 3 F words, 3 H words, 3 M words.
I usually like to guess a word with the most common starting letter.
Maybe HUSKY for me.
So, what I do is create a chart. I list the words vertically (which I have done anyway in my daily journal) and then I list the possible guesses horizontally, and then I examine how many times that guess would result in a 3.
I usually go with the highest number.
Sometimes if it leaves 2 words, I’ll put in “1/2” instead of an “X” in that slot.
I almost always pick a word from the list, but I have done burner words made up of the most common letters of the words in the group.
======================================
So, what do I think about SLATE. I think it’s pretty solid as a starter. Better than ROATE, but not as good as RAISE.
To compare SANER and SLATE sounds like a dead heat on the surface, I would have to make a new sheet for SANER. I think SANER would probably be better.
The one thing that concerns me is that they may be holding back certain words (like words ending in “Y”) for later.
I is the 5th most common letter left, but they’ve gone 9 days without using it. The last word was ORBIT on 7/23/26.
The curation of the list affects the randomness.
Since I don’t know their plan, I have to play the odds.
If the odds on REPEATs or ADDs (and there are 600 of those words!) increase to %33, %33, %33 then my word list has to change.
Right now, it’s at least 2 to 1 unplayed 2315 words to everything else. And probably 4 to 1 in actuality.
We are tracking.
You asked a simple question about one word and you got a thesis.
That’s what happens when that person has a graduate degree.
LOL.
Maybe, I need to write a book on it. Who would buy it though?
re: “My thoughts on SLATE.”
Sounds like a great chapter title in your forthcoming “The Book of Wordle”. 😉
Are you kidding me? I LOOOOVE this. Thank you ever-so-much for sharing so much detail on your thoughts of SLATE!
I started using SLATE prior to the 🤖 (early 2022) and permanently 4 days prior to 🤖 announcing SLATE as their new starting word along with 🤖 2.0.
So my 4+ years of charts-including sub-words, used words, potential ADDs, etc. are based on SLATE and I don’t have the energy/will to start all over with a new starting word even if RAISE is better. So instead, why don’t you just send me your RAISE file? LOLZ JK.😜 🥸🤪 I can see you have much more energy/will than I.
Okay, so what I’m still not getting is that, with “prior knowledge” toggled on, why wouldn’t 🤖 use RAISE since it is clearly the better starting word? I still don’t understand that-even with a graduate degree 🤡 But you started your thesis saying that 🤖 bases answers on ALL OG words. If that’s the case, WTH does toggling on “prior knowledge” mean?
The NYT says turning it on means this: It alters 🤖’s Own Path. When analyzing, 🤖 will simulate its own choices using this prior knowledge. This means its choice of starting words and recommended steps might change dynamically.
You probably remember that 🤖 has indeed changed its starting word over time (CRANE and TRACE) before settling last year on SLATE to present. Now that it has that damn recent toggle, it should be using RAISE. Dang it—I’m still missing something aren’t I?
Verbosity is my middle name.
Welcome to the After Party Christine V.! 😉 Verbosity and nounosity welcome.
I would buy it in a heartbeat, but why would I—you’ve already written it above LOL
I don’t go to the Bot review daily, because I’m not a subscriber. Otherwise, I would.
I know I can go “incognito” and put in the same game and see what it says.
I don’t think the Bot analyzes the game the same way I do.
SLATE is a good start word considering the entire word list (including REPEATS). I am not certain that it analyzes the pool of solutions by removing the played words. (like we all do on FF to a certain extent. Isn’t that why we are all here?)
The fact that it used CRANE and TRACE in the past is actually interesting though. “C” has declined in frequency of the words left. It’s interesting that it still values “T”, but that is still more frequent than “C”.
If 5 letter tiers (the way I memorize them)
It was
EAROT / LISNC / UYDHP / MGBFK / WV / ZXQJ
now
ERASI / OTLYN / UCPDH / GMBKF / WV / ZJXQ
===============================
C has dropped 2 spots into Tier 3 from Tier 2.
T has dropped 2 spots into Tier 2 from Tier 1.
N has only dropped 1 spot. It’s a Tier 2 letter. Barely.
SLATE indicates partly, that the letter S has risen in value, and maybe the Bot recognizes that.
S has risen 4 spots from Tier 2 to Tier 1!
S1(96) is still the most common starting letter which adds to why SLATE is a good starter.
The curious thing is that the Bot doesn’t see the I as a good starting letter. Maybe, it believes a 3 consonant word is better than a 3 vowel word? TRACE and CRANE have 3 consonants as well.
I am intrigued by the one vowel words that Glenda is / was using.
SLANT followed by PRICY could be a good 1-2 word combo (even if it leaves out the most common letter “E”.)
Thanks for the analysis, JD. I’m impressed with your strategies and knowledge.
Believe it or not, the ER ending is one reason why I chose SANER. I guess every strategy has trade-offs. I usually use at least one burner word with 5 new letters anyway, so I don’t mind if I end up with 14 unplayed words.
I think you’ll be fine.
====================================
The other one to look out for is “S” in the right position which leaves 20 words: SHOCK, SHOOK, SHOOT, SILKY, SIXTY, SKULK, SLIMY, SLOOP, SLUSH, SLYLY, SMOKY, SOOTH, SOOTY, SPIKY, SPILT, SPOOK, SQUIB, STOOP, STUCK, SWIFT.
SHOOT OR SPILT could cut through a lot of those options.
So, it’s probably not as bad as the ER leave that I mentioned earlier.
Even with prior knowledge toggled on, the BOT habitually chooses SLATE as a starting word. What are your thoughts on SLATE?

🟩🟩🟩⬛⬛ FLUID
🟩🟩🟩⬛⬛ FLUSH
🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 FLUME
Not-used Fluid & Flush were denied over PU Flume!
But as they say, at least it’s not a 4.
Three is always a terrific score! And starting with f paid off 🥳
And a Sea of Greens to boot! Well done!

⬛⬛⬛🟩🟩 BIOME (pu highly likely?)
🟩⬛⬛🟩🟩 FEMME doubledouble because, July
🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 FLUME pu !! This one I saw at 2 but ignored ESP, dang it!
You ignored your teeleepathy 🤭
Now that’s funny! 🤣
Hilarious!
So clever! 😉

🟨⬛⬛⬛🟩 unite vowel finder
🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 flume then is it guess right, hope or skill
I actually started with AROSE, used orate for so long my fingers just followed instinct, same/same resuts
Wouldn’t luck vs skill depend on how many word options were left when you guessed FLUME?
I don’t know how the Bot calculates it.
I wish I knew. Often the Skill/Luck numbers perplex me.

⬜⬜⬜⬜🟩arose
🟨⬜⬜⬜⬜unity
🟩🟨⬜⬜🟩fudge
🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩flume
I almost tried flume as my 3rd choice (pu but early on), but unfortunately opted for fudge (only unused option at that point).
Odds of fudge were in your favor even if it didn’t work out.
FUDGE was the correct play.
I did the same exact thing (with 2 different starter words RAISE and FENCE.)
Prior to FUDGE, I think I would have had a lot more choices anyway.
Mornin’ 😊 back to theme……
ooh, how about that, a #3 in the closing days of July – Yay
⬜🟨⬜⬜⬜ PUSHY
⬜⬜🟩⬜⬜ BLUNT
🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 FLUME
ooops – bRunt
Wow! That’s amazing. You got 3 with just a U! Bot says there are 24 (mostly non-ADD words) left after brunt. (shakes head in awe.) 👏
Thanks Christine – but FF filter has to take the credit – all I did was choose the 2nd earliest word instead of the 1st (CLUCK)
v. happy to break my string of 4s finally !!
Using the FF filter was extra fun today, even if I got a 4.

Beat the bot though
Being in such a different time zone I have to be so careful to post my very early morning solves on the correct date.
Oh it is not a problem at all.
Of course to make a new post you have to scroll past the existing posts so no chance of an error even if I am half asleep.
Meg:
The code that lists the daily After Parties is *supposed* to highlight the puzzle date based on your browser / device time with a “Today” button. This is to help people pick their active puzzle.
For those of us in the U.S., we typically see “Today” as the second in the After Party view.
Does the “Today” button show up for you as the first row?
Yes it does.
My comments are more a reflection of my sleepiness.
Good. Sweet dreams.
