Once I had a V word in mind, there was no going back. And with a choice between SALVE and VALVE, I’ll choose the double V. 😎😎
For a future day of difficulty SALVE and CALVE are still unused.

So, I decided on playing a burner word (no chance for 2) using common letters from each word. G, T, N, Y, L.
I could have played TANGY or LYING which play at least 4 of these letters while simultaneously ruling out 4 more letters in case of a REPEAT or an ADD.
Nothing matched but the A in TANGY. So, only the L in VALVE was left.
VALVE has the double letter also! but so did GAFFE and PAYEE.

There definitely is, and I don’t think I’ve ever had that ability.
SANER is a pretty good start word IMHO. It contains many of the most common letters in the words that are left to solve.

At the top of the lists, I update the “odds” of repeat from low, to medium, to high at the top based on the number of days since last repeat, the pattern of repeats, and the current “rate” of repeat. On the repeat stats table I changed the column “repeat odds” to “repeat rate” which hovers around 11%.
It’s a crude guess and only based on past information.
low (2) = 0 to 4
medium (6) = 5 to 9
high (9) = 10 or higher -
JD asked for a report on my odds theory. I described what’s going on including past stats to Google Gemini. I explained how we believe these repeats are being inserted manually vs. randomly. Gemini reported:
Calculating the “Growing Probability” (Hazard Rate)
Your core hypothesis is that the longer we go without a repeat, the greater the chance one happens tomorrow. In statistics, this is called the Hazard Function or conditional probability.
To find the actual odds of a repeat triggering tomorrow given that we have already gone \(X\) days without one, we divide the number of times a gap occurred at that day by how many intervals actually survived long enough to reach that day.
Based strictly on your Repeat Stats to date:
If it has been 2 days since a repeat: The historical chance of a repeat tomorrow is 6% (1 out of the 17 intervals triggered on day 3).
If it has been 8 days since a repeat: Only 11 intervals in your data ever made it past day 8. Of those 11, 4 triggered on day 9. Your conditional odds for tomorrow jump to 36.4%.
If it has been 14 days since a repeat: Only 2 intervals in your history ever made it to day 14 without triggering. Both of them triggered on exactly day 15. Your conditional odds for tomorrow are 100%.
✅ Final Conclusion
In a pure random game, the odds of a repeat tomorrow are always 11.2%, regardless of past history. In the NYT’s curated game, the odds start at 0% on Day 1, climb steadily to around 35% by Day 9, and spike drastically toward 100% as you approach Day 15. Your intuition matches the empirical data perfectly.-

That tells you that it’s a %64 chance of it not being a REPEAT.
So, guessing REPEATs at that point is against the ODDs you just stated.

Agreed on 36% at 9 but when does it cross 50% in the “spikes drastically”?
That’s why I shift to “high” at 10 and when I start selectively using repeats if they 1) are good filters and 2) year one (for now.)
All of this is a guess at the bias created by Tracy yelling at the oarsmen each week.

When it gets closer to %50, I may expand my pool of words to include the REPEAT words.
I’ll probably create 2 sublists.
BTW, 502 words left on the original 2315 list which doesn’t include the second and third batch of words they removed; so, it’s actually much fewer.

I just poked around for one vowel words containing RTLSN letters, and discovered SLANT hasn’t been played yet.

Yes JD, its on my list along with 27 others beginning with S, single letter, non-dupl. consonants….. STUNK, SLINK, SLUNK, SHALT, SLURP ….
heaps still to play 😊

If/when my current start word SANER is the answer, maybe I’ll try SLANT.
