    Nerd alert (physicist/scuba diver)πŸ€“
    Sonar (like radar, laser, and scuba) started out as an acronym (sound navigation and ranging). The
    Under water principle was first shown by da Vinci (1490) but the term SONAR wasn’t used until 1942.

    β€œThe web” had told me that scuba had been removed from the solution list by NYT because it was an acronym (first used in 1952 but MW lists it as a regular word now) . And (in the original list) it was supposed to the solution on Aug 16, 2023.
    But in Dec 2022 NYT reshuffled the list. Up until then they had keeping the order but were just skipping words they didn’t like.

    Hopefully β€œthe web” was wrong about β€œscuba” (can’t find my original source that said it was cut)

    1. SCUBA wasn’t cut and it’s Weighted Bottles score is %58.

      It will certainly be played some day.

      Humph being the 3rd word ever (or 4th? Cigar is 0?) sounds like the guy was trolling his friends a bit even very early on.
      We’ve had moult before.
      Clued, plied & octal seem like weird things to exclude (not just because I’ve started with or guessed them before πŸ₯²)
      Gaily vs gayly I can see being a problem, however, Kaput is with a K, absolutely.
      Kneed seems fine too but w/e.
      Rest I can see being excluded
      Imagine scrabble freaks coming over to this game with all the guess/solve crap going on here. β€œWhat do you mean β€œabuna” wasn’t it??” Maybe that’s where all the bizarre guess 6 fails on wordlebot come from

      1. You’re right, HUMPH (3) – (6/22/21) and MOULT (99) – (9/6/21) were played.

        Perhaps, since these were played before FETUS on 5/9/22 they didn’t think about them.

        Personally, I don’t have a problem with either of those 2 words.

        =======================================
        CLUED, KNEED and PLIED may be removed because they are ED words that are past tense verbs?

        =======================================
        I don’t have a problem with OCTAL. Maybe they thought it was too obscure, but then why add GUNKY, LORIS and PSHAW?

        This is where I think they’re being inconsistent.

        =======================================
        Agreed on GAYLY / GAILY.

        =======================================
        I have no problem with KAPUT.

        ========================================
        I play a lot of Words With Friends (Scrabble’s evil cousin). There are a lot of obscure words that you have to learn in that game. Some aren’t even words, but they’re in their word list; so, you learn them.

    I tried to think like Wordlebot today and use a word to rule out others and maybe pick up some letters. SHARP was a fairly low number reused one. WB did approve, and it got me the A and the R, so I guess it worked. But it still used up a guess and made me miss the average.

    I thought it was interesting that SONAR was the answer today. When I used LIDAR recently, the ‘bot said that it was technically a valid guess but unlikely to be the solution.

    I guess SONAR is much better known.

      Hi there!

      Fantastic!!!!

    2. Awesome!

    3. Sweet! You could go with another lexicalized acronym like TASER. It’s not on the 2315 list, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it became an add.

      1. Thanks! What list of 2315 do you use? The one I have seems to be incomplete.

      2. TASER has a weighted bottle score of %51.38.

        It is a likely ADD. More likely than PSHAW which was added, it has a WB score of %40.88.

        PSHAW shows up with the lowest WB score of all the words that have been ADD’s. There are 15 words with scores worse than PSHAW that have scores over %36.

        Below %36, there’s a huge gap then %4 (mentioned above).

        Those words are:

        ABOIL, AFORE, BRUIN, CLADE, DICER, DOWSE, DUCAT, METRE, NAGGY, OGLER, PLASM, RAVEL, TETRA, TUFTY, UNJAM.

        Technically, likely to be ADDs, but should they be?

    STEAL left 7 possible, but 6 were used. I worried about a repeat, but gambled against it.

    1. Well done. You played it the right way.

      The odds are still against REPEATs (even if the odds of a REPEAT are rising).

      1. If repeats are randomly selected, then yes, the odds the next game is a repeat are the same regardless of days past. But I spot non-random in these patterns like maybe Cody the Coder was told to spread out X repeats into the rest of the year’s list.

        But 18 is a small selection for stats.

        1. I actually think the opposite that these REPEATS, ADDs and the entire word list is NOT random.

          It’s being curated by Tracy Bennett to make the game more challenging.

          How else would you explain the run on double letter words? If %20 of the words contain double letters then why would %60 of the recent answers contain them?

          She knows people are expecting REPEATs so she is creating non-regular patterns to throw us off.

          If you watch the videos, it’s clear that she’s selecting these words one by one in a queue of about 28-30 days in advance.

          The best way to play this is to play the odds straight up IMHO.

          If try to guess there will be a REPEAT and there isn’t one, you’ll score a lot of 4’s in the %82 of the days where it isn’t going to happen. I would rather rule out the words that haven’t been played yet and then consider REPEATs or ADDs. This way, I’m getting a 4 on those %36 of those days (worst case since I can often rule them out on guess 2.)

          This is why I love this site, because it gives me a list of the words that have been played already.

          1. My point was that it is not random. Cory the Coder.

        2. Right, but it seems you think that makes the REPEAT more likely to happen tomorrow.

          What I am saying is that it doesn’t make it more likely because there’s evidence of her grouping the ADDs and REPEATs in clusters. Definitively NOT random.

          She puts these words closer together which creates longer runs of non-repeats or non-adds.

          I can point out the specific instances if you want. (Both recent and in the past)

          When you guess the REPEATs every day, your overall guess count is going to go up not down.

          1. re: “When you guess the REPEATs every day, ”

            You shouldn’t do that, especially after a recent repeat. But you *can* use repeats selectively (first year, great match/filter) as the number of days since last repeat get into the “high” range (10 or greater.) Deciding to not use in those cases could also increase your guess count.

        3. The REPEAT is just as likely the day after a REPEAT as it is 10 days after the REPEAT.

          She has done back to back ADD’s before and more recently REPEAT followed by and ADD or vice verse.

          So, back to back REPEATs definitely possible.

          Trying to guess the exact day of a REPEAT is folly.

          Using a REPEAT as a burner word or a filter is fine if the possibilities are just too vast.

          I always try to guess unplayed 2315 words as my filter; so, it can also be the answer. This gives me an outside shot at a 2.

    SHARK, SCARY and SWARM would have left a 50-50 with the other 2.

    I decided on SHARK because it’s still summer. Shark attacks are in the news. If it were Halloween or Friday the 13th, I might have leaned SCARY.

    SHARK is a nice hedge in case she adds SNARK which is a likely ADD. It’s WB score is 58.

    Any of these guesses would have lead to SONAR.

    I don’t usually have access to the bot information because I’m not paying for a NYT subscription. However, I recently cleared my browser cache in an attempt to troubleshoot a problem, so just for today, I was able to look at the bot’s feedback.

    1. You could do it in a private / incognito browser.

      I forget how to do it on my iphone, but CTRL + SHIFT + N on the computer works.

    2. Well done, BTW.

      1. Thank you.

    3. WordleBot usually hides its analysis button with a subscription screen overlay (up to 3 of them!) Sometimes it doesn’t, which I think is to give you a free taste. With Apple Safari browser there is a “Hide Distracting Items” feature that lets you hide the overlay(s) and get to the analysis button.

      Also a good way to see paywall content (sometimes.)

      I don’t think Chrome has a feature like this and requires an extension like “uBlock Origin” and its “Element Zapper”.

      1. Thanks to both you and JD for the suggestions. I’ll keep them in mind.

        It’s tempting to use those suggestions and spend more time on Wordle each day, but eventually I have pull myself away from the game and get stuff done.

        With my husband, I make a joke out of “unplugging” my brain from distractions: I make a hand motion like I’m yanking something off my forehead and I make a popping sound with my mouth at the same time.

        πŸ”Œ

        1. I don’t bother doing the Wordle Bot thing. I use an entirely different strategy than it would use anyway.

          I figure I probably tie or beat the Bot most days.

          I spend enough time analyzing anyway.

          Unfortunately, the REPEAT rate is ticking up a bit too.

          Hopefully, the long term odds will stay about %10 after we get past the next 4 weeks.
