One of the key metrics I’m looking at for these start words. How large of a group of words I am going to be left with given pattern? (e. g. like A in the wrong position) The smaller those large numbers are, the better.
Given the number of words left ending in Y, PUDGY gets the edge over POUCH even though O is the most common letter in the remaining words.
Guessing either O or U is nearly interchangeable since just about every word except LYMPH and PYGMY have either O or U in it. So if U is not present, it probably has an O or vice verse.
PUDGY would lead me to both LYMPH and PYGMY. POUCH would not.
In this case, PUDGY leaves me only TODDY as a possibility.
I just worked it out for ROATE.

It’s not in MW, but it has 9 different entries in OED.com
I tried to copy and paste but it wouldn’t let me.
OED app wanted money after 3 day free trial.
I don’t think NYT did any editing of the playable words list at all. There’s a lot of British words in there still.
BTW, LORRY is still in the 2315 list.

I was hoping someone would have access to the OED through a library or university. Just a single one of the 9 definitions: STURE, noun. c 1485-1598. a sturgeon. If you look up “sturgeon” in M-W:
“Middle English, from Anglo-French estourgeoun, of Germanic origin; akin to Old English styria sturgeon
First Known Use
13th century, in the meaning defined above”
So that is at least one meaning!-

Josh Wardle must have used the OED for many of his allowed words. There appear to be many I don’t recognize. -
I have always coveted the full 20-volume hardback edition of the OED. In fact, it was the first thing I put on my Amazon Wishlist back in 1999. Unfortunately, at around $1200, none of my family members thought it was a reasonably priced birthday gift. Understandable. So, alternatively, I added the compact version to the list which, at the bargain price of only $379, seemed perfectly reasonable to me. I am still waiting. But, I have a birthday coming up at the end of the month, so🤞. 😏😂
