Anyone who saw my post from yesterday would have expected this result. Just repeated the same first 2 words and lucked out this time… month of U eagle!

    1. Awesome!

  2. ACRONYM words. Per yesterday’s conversation
    ====================================las

FUBAR is on the 10657 Playable list.
I am not sure it will be an ADD.

    LASER (1038)

RADAR is on the 2315 list and unplayed.

SCUBA is on the 2315 list and unplayed.

SNAFU was an ADD on 4/9/23

    1. Others??
      ========================
      CODEC (on the playable list)
      MODEM (1200)
      SONAR (unplayed)
      TASER (on the playable list)
      ZIPPO (on the playable list)

      1. I looked up ACRONYM and there is a difference between an ACRONYM and an INITIALISM.

I’ve known that for ages, JD, and it always gives me a cringey feeling when people use that term wrong, as well as the word β€œperuse” that people don’t seem to understand

          1. Same! In fact, I just had this argument in a trivia game thread. These days, acronym seems to be used to describe any abbreviation that is in all caps. BIG pet peeve of mine. πŸ€¦πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

          2. Glenda M Avatar
            Glenda M

due to its common-use as an acronym of the original meaning…. frustrating

my pet peeve is folk – especially newsreaders (who should know better – or actually, their script writers should) who use double synonyms (for want of a more accurate term) such as return back, progress forward…
and wouldn’t you know it – no more examples spring to mind πŸ€”

        2. Glenda M Avatar
          Glenda M

this make NIMBY an initialism – yes ?

          1. Yes! Good example!

          2. In regards to double synonyms, I hear a term used in the fantasy football community in the US (so this is American Football) β€œpositive regression”. They should just use β€œprogression” as the opposite of β€œregression”. This makes me cringe.

        3. Mike S Avatar

Your mention of fantasy football’s use of ‘positive regression’ got me curious. Why *would* they say that?

It looks like ‘regression analysis’ is a statistical term that is mathematically independent from the standard meaning of progression/regression.

I don’t know statistics. And it was breaking my brain just to read the wikipedia page. But basically if the prediction line is upward it’s positive, downward it’s negative. But mapping the statistical points that determine that prediction line, or the map itself, is referred to as regression. Or something like that. Thus, positive regression and negative regression.

Hopefully that helps you enjoy enjoy the fantasy football analysis more with less cringing. πŸ™‚

          1. Some analyst wrote an article with β€œpositive regression” in the title.

Since then, almost all the analysts use this expression.

Why can’t they just say β€œprogression” and β€œregression”? It’s a lot simpler and more correct. IMHO.

Financial analysts sometimes use the term β€œmean reversion”. That one, I believe is correct.

FF analysts are new to numbers analysis, and I think this is why this happens.

    2. Thanks JD!

  3. WORDS with 3 of the same letter!
    =========================
Per yesterday’s conversation about words with 3 E’s.
    ====================================

There are 5 total (per my formula, but it should’ve counted only 4).

    EERIE (1773)
    EMCEE (1835)
LEVEE (playable) – This would be an ADD.
    MELEE (unplayed)
    TEPEE (unplayed)

    D (1) – DADDY (unplayed)
    F (1) – FLUFF (382)
M (4) – MAMMA (unplayed), MAMMY (unplayed), MOMMY (add), MUMMY (491)
    N (2) – NANNY (714), NINNY (unplayed)
    P (2) – POPPY (1475), PUPPY (unplayed)
    R (2) – ERROR (71), RARER (unplayed)
    S (2) – SASSY (878), SISSY(2)
    T (1) – TATTY (unplayed)

I fear RARER, the most. I have PTSD from Quordle on that word.

            He he … confusing, huh,
Because I’m a day ahead, I respond from the next day.

When I wake up, I read folks emails on my phone ….
I start on AfterParty (previous date) and follow how folk did, words they used, high-flyers n low-lyers, grid-art etc…. before I do my new current-day Wordle solve, which I then post while most folk on here are 😴

Then I respond to the emails received, and threads, from 1 & sometimes 2 days earlier

    🟨⬜⬜⬜🟩 ROATE
    ⬜🟨🟨⬜🟩 PURSE
    🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 CRUDE

    ROATE leaves 7 words.

PURSE is my standard guess for this pattern, because PUREE is still available.

SPREE would also work, because SCREE is still unplayed also.

The only words that would leave me a 50-50 are CRUDE and URINE.

I had a feeling that a 3rd C in a row might appear. So, I went with CRUDE.

BTW, C is now a Tier 3 letter. Used to rank 10th. It’s now 12th and only one occurrence above P.

    101 C’s. 100 P’s. left after this puzzle.

Is this a current events word? I don’t think the Strait of Hormuz is really open yet.

I asked her, β€œWhich word should I start my Wordle with this morning?” She stared at me with those soulful round eyes as if to say, β€œStop being so boring. Do something with your life.” Message received. Brand new start word it is!

I skipped my Starts List and went straight to my 2315 Unused List where I scrolled until I found something new and inspired. FEMUR was the bone I picked and what a lovely surprise it was.

Learn and Stoic led to 4 words not on the PUL: Creek, Creep, CrΓ¨me, Crude. CrΓ¨me was appealing; It made me think of CrΓ¨me BrΓ»lΓ©e, but only Creek would rule in/out the other 3, which left Crude. Then I took Raise for another test drive around the track. I tried Raise, Clout, which led to Crude or Curve. Curve is on the PUL so It would be a 3! πŸ™‚

How many word lists for WORDLE are there besides the original?

    1. CRUDE was a new word. But yes, the pattern of using repeats is about 1 every 10 days. I update the “odds” of repeat at the top of the list and maintain a “stats” list link to help show the pattern.

There is an FAQ about why NYT had to start repeating words under Support menu.

    2. There were 2315 words on the original answer list created by Josh Wardle.

There are 526 left on that list.

41 words have been added to that list and been played.

3 more ADDs in the 30 day queue.

There have been 16 REPEATs including CIGAR on 2/2/26.

There are 10657 words which are not on the 2315 list that are playable. Those include all 41 added words and the 3 more words that are coming.

There is an ADD about 1 every 13 days.

There is a REPEAT about 1 every 10 days.

I used SPRUE for letter placement and testing the P, which I felt was a pretty common part of several U words. Not a WordleBot fave, REBUS was recommended because it had a B as in words like EXURB and another word (REBUY?) This happened in the setting where WB has access to previously used words. When I checked later, the word and comment had been changed to: Good guess, REUSE more efficient. So WB has midgame do-overs, who knew?

I was with you when you said 3s are better than 2s.

But the only positives I see about 6s are:

      – They mean that the puzzle actually had to be solved.
      – They can elicit more tension and relief.
      – They’re not 7s.

I’ll gladly keep my 2 count 5.29 times higher than my 6s though.
