@JD I play in hard mode which I have always thought was easier because you don’t have limitless letter possibilities.
Until last week I didn’t know about the WordFinder app. It certainly changes the way I approach the game. But my favorite app is FF.

  2. All of the foody discussion in today’s After Party made me think I should share http://www.fiveforks.com/katfood/ — another Five Forks Labs project.

Never used that start word before, but it’s right above COBRA on my starts list and it just seemed like a good choice today. It was!

I used Crate, Loins, which led to 5 possible words, 4 of which were previously used: 2 from 2021, one from 2023, and one from 2024. I guessed the un-used word first and thankfully Chili was the answer.

Yeah, he’s basically Batman, complete with gadgets and an extensive secret underground hideout.

But he’s a thief with a sexy girlfriend who’s his partner in crime, the two frequently thwarting the local head of the police. So, not Batman.

        1. Italian Batman?

Does he drink double expresso? and that’s where the strength comes from?

I need to look up these films!

          1. Mike S Avatar

The character is from a very popular (in Italy) comic book series. I haven’t read any.

As for the movies, I’d start with, and maybe end with, ‘Danger: Diabolik’ (1968). It’s very campy and fun. The modern (2020s) movies are a bit darker and less fun.

Yep, my streak ended a couple times for other reasons.

Once, I simply forgot to play that day. If you don’t play, your streak ends. (Not so on M-W Quordle BTW.)

The other time is when I flew over the International Date Line going west to Japan. You lose a full day when you do that. It’s so weird.

It’s going to happen again when I go to NZ.

I chose COILS over COINS for the second word: both were EAROT LISNC compliant, but the L was slightly higher in rank. The other two possiblilities next were CHILL and CHILD, both PU. We are in a statistical safe zone: the second day after a repeat word, so CHILI was it.

    ⬜🟨🟩⬜⬜ SLIMY
    ⬜⬜🟩⬜🟨 AVAIL AXIAL
🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 silly me, was sure this had a LL so didn’t check – took forever πŸ™„

    1. Same. Thought it was CHILLI for sure.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofuTVx6GfsM

LIZZO is not on the list!

    2. How did the “A” in AVAIL give you a green?

    3. And an I in AVAIL would trigger a yellow.

Using Word Finder, the only ‘A’ word I could come up with was AXIAL.

      https://www.merriam-webster.com/wordfinder/fill-in-blanks/common/5/a_i_l/1

      1. She probably played “AXIAL” then.

        Glenda, can you confirm?

Ah, yes indeed – i did play AXIAL
          (& if i hadn’t made the CHILLI booboo would’ve been a 3)

and – I sit and rack my brains for words once I have eliminated some key letters & pu’s ……. Seems I may be doing things the hard way ?!
How does a word eliminate a specific number of possibilities ?
          eg
ROATE brings in down to 67 words
SLIMY brought it down to one word.
others pop this on too πŸ€”

          1. Made the edit. The universe may resume.

          2. Hi Glenda,

There are many different strategies for Wordle that I see on this blog.

            They all have different subgoals.

The people you see that have words left counts are probably using an app.

Mine is a lot more complicated. People shouldn’t do what I do. It’s a series of word lists based on the pattern I get back from ROATE.

The word lists are basically unplayed 2315 words.

My second guess is based on the words I think are left.

The question is. Does what I do work? The answer is β€œSort of”. I just had 5x 4’s in a row and another one today.

So, what are your goals? Do you want to solve it in the fewest tries? Do you want to get it ONE try?

With ROATE, I’ll never get it in ONE, but I always get it in 2.

Others play 2 standard words. They’ll likely not score a 2 very often, but they’ll get a lot of 3’s.

Others play in hard mode. That’s a completely different game.

            Do you play hard mode?

        2. Glenda M Avatar
          Glenda M

Ah – i thought there must be an app….
          It’s a min(e)d game for us……
I just used 7 randoms to increase my chance at getting it in ONE, but ….
I brainstorm for nu’s after my starter & check on FF & Github (I was going nuts doing this once Id incorrectly discounted ‘chilli’ because nothing else fit !!)
I didn’t know about hard mode until the afterparty chat…. and haven’t investigated, so don’t know how/where

          1. If you are going to go for a ONE, make sure that they A) Have not been played already B) Are on the 2315 list.

That would increase your odds a lot.

Not having the numbers in front of me, I would say there are about 550 words that fall into that category.

So, your odds of getting it in ONE (even if you follow A and B above are 1 in 550 (minus the adds and repeats.) which makes it more like 1 in 625.

That’s %0.16 which is better than the million dollar lottery but not realistic.

Personally, I won’t be changing to hard mode until Tracy Bennett resets the game. My entire Wordle history is in easy mode. Like you, I didn’t know about it until my sister (who is much smarter than me) told me that she plays Wordle that way. I don’t even want to know what her record is.

Ironically, probably %95 of my games could have been played in hard mode anyway. Very rarely do I need to play a burner word, but when I have to, it’s very useful.

The people who play hard mode need to fall into certain word patterns (like ?ATCH ). So, they need to play in such a way where they don’t match letters on purpose so they can burn through more of them.

If you want to “get it in ONE”, maybe try to pick 2 words that play as many letters as you can from the following groups.

            E A R O T L I S N C (in that order).

            Next tier is U Y D H P.

Words like STEAL haven’t been played yet. You have to find a word to pair with that one. That leaves R O I N C. So you can play ORCIN. That will never be the answer, but it will give you the rest of the letters from Tiers 1 & 2. CORNY might not be bad either. Leaves out the I though. I don’t have the list in front of me to see if it’s been played or been on the 2315 list. GROIN might work, but G is a tier 4 letter, but at least it puts “R” in the second position (it’s optimal spot).

          2. I left out some important words in my previous post.

Instead of ” I always get it in 2.” (which certainly isn’t true), I meant to say “I always have the chance of getting a 2.”

        3. Glenda M Avatar
          Glenda M

wow- thanks for all the interesting info

          I always check your A & B points

I like STEAL & CRONY – possibly better options than my CLOUT (with 4 of your top 5) & SEPIA (covers rest of vowels) which have been serving me pretty well

          1. Yes, of course, CRONY is a better anagram than CORNY (even if I am more like the latter than the former! LOL)
