First time using that start word and it worked out well. Was tempted to try the solve as my 2nd guess, but opted for a non-PU instead. That’s what I get for thinking.

Where is George Carlin when you need him.

      — — —

I wasn’t aware of two of these words and had to look them up.

Unless there is a strong slang meaning I can’t find, from what I can discover VROUW stands out as not belonging on this list. That’s not to say I think it would ever be a solution word.

But it’s a Dutch word meaning woman or wife, depending on the sentence, similar to frau in German. It seems any taboo or offensive connotation it might have is extremely contextual. And any offensiveness would be found in its usage and by extension the user rather than in the word itself.

If all that is the case, VROUW is distinct from all the other words which more clearly seem as if they could be seen as pejorative or rude by some NYT readers.

      1. I read in one of the dictionary definitions that it could be considered offensive, but I’ll check again.

      SNAFU 659 04/09/23

on that note, i do find it interesting that this word made the cut.
i suspect most people aren’t aware it’s an acronym. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

      1. I am not aware of the acronym myself. I’ll have to look it up.

      2. Mike S Avatar

I remember being surprised when SNAFU was the Wordle solution.

I suppose its usage has evolved to primarily being a noun that is little more than a synonym for a snag or difficulty.

FUBAR on the other hand, has not softened nearly as much.

        1. kralc Avatar

good points. it does indeed appear to have morphed in to a term of endearment. i do find that to be situationally humorous, it technically being a slam.

fubar on the other hand, perhaps due to it being an adverb, is a much tougher sell. just doesn’t roll off the tongue like snafu does. 😎

    🟨⬜🟨⬜🟩 ROATE
    ⬜🟨🟩⬜🟩 PARSE
    🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 AGREE (70)

Another REPEAT and no ADD today.

I think she’s run out of ideas. I need to post that β€œDear Tracy” letter now (even though I’m not done with the word usage analysis yet.

So ROATE narrowed down to only AFIRE and PARSE. Since I would rather have S P vs I F, I played PARSE.

The result ruled out both unused words.

Now I know it is either an ADD or REPEAT.

The only REPEAT possible was AGREE(40) and it a very early one also.

Possible ADDs were AERIE (which I considered playing and AURAE (a plural) and MORAE (also a plural)

I reckoned that she ran out of ideas for ADDs, so, I went with AGREE.

To me, this pattern looks like backwards F and C lying sideways.

    1. FIELD
      CAUSE
      AWOKE
      AGATE
      AGREE
I was expecting a repeat today so for a new challenge I intentionally stuck to prior solutions.
Tracy did not β€œdisappoint” me on thatπŸ™„ but I am hoping for an interesting ADD or at least some of the β€œserendipity” that she promised us in the repeats

I admire your attempt to inject some fun back into the NYT’s lame decision to start reusing words. Now that they’ve ripped the scab off the wound we have about another three weeks before they rip it off again.

REAST isn’t even a word. How are you allowed to play that?!

      1. But it IS a word according to OED. It’s not listed in M-W.

More importantly, it’s on the 10657 list (playable).

Same thing for ROATE which I start with every day.

I think NYT is either lazy in their editing of the playable words list (if they even touched it)

In other versions of Wordle, I can’t play ROATE.

        1. Upon closer inspection of the OED, REAST is a variation of rest or roost.

It is a word, but a rarely used variant of other words.

So, by itself, not really a word.

ROATE is the same story. It’s a variant of ROAT which is an obsolete variant of ROTE.

You can blame either Josh Wardle or Tracy Bennett for that one.

      2. I would like to add to JD’s answers that Wordle allows guesses for the first word that would not be allowed in the following ones. (I know that Proper Nouns such as CUBAN are excluded, though). Some adventurous players have even used Roman numerals for their first play!
