I had to look up the meaning of the word. A latin word meaning shadow. I thought the word was very difficult today.

    1. No kidding! Never heard of it.

  5. We’re overdue for an ADD now. I expect it any day now.

    Next REPEAT around 5/13/26.

    We’ll see what actually happens.

    1. How do you check for adds? I have been going to the wordle list on word unscrambler (after I play) to check to see if all of my guesses were actually in the current solution set, assuming that they still wouldn’t have any new adds, but they may have better intel and be adding new adds to their lizt before the come up as solutions.

      1. Hi Mark,

This is the list of 2315 words in the original answer list in Wordle created by Josh Wardle at the time he sold it to NYT.

The developers who know how to look into the Java code were able to extract this list along with the 10657 playable words.

This is the list of 2315 words

        https://gist.github.com/DevilXD/6ad6cc1fe37872d069a795edd51233b2#file-wordle_words-txt

You can copy and paste this into a text file. I used Notepad. Then, I sent it to myself and created a Notes file on my iphone.

So, you can check to see if the words you want to guess are on this list.

I should note that NYT, may have altered this list significantly without letting us know. Think of it as a list of common 5 letter words.

Is an ADD a word that has not been used before?

      1. An ADD is a word that is the answer, but is not part of the original 2315 answer list.

Thus far, they have not repeated any of the ADD’s. So, so far, that’s true.

They can choose to REPEAT any word that’s already been played including the ADD’s and even repeat the REPEATs (I think less likely.)

  6. (1) ROATE

    (2) FAIRY

(I could have also have gone “DAIRY” here, but with “FRIAR” still been unplayed, I thought I would see if I could get the “F”.)

    (3) UMBRA

    This one was pretty straightforward.

    Back to the 3’s. Yay!

    ⬜⬜🟨🟩⬜ Stare
    ⬜🟨⬜🟩⬜ Cairn
    🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 Umbra
Stare gave me 2 letters. After Stare, I used the Wordle Solver Tool to get 17 possible words, 7 of which had not been used. Before discovering the Wordle Solver Tool, after I got 2-3 letters I would read through the NYT list of about 2300 words to get ideas on what could work. To me the solver tool is a time saver. I made a letter-by-position chart of the 7 words and guessed Cairn which led to Umbra.

    1. Good process!

      1. Mongo is a pet dinosaur in the scifi book series β€œdungeon crawler carl”. It is also a unit of Mongolian currency, which is why it worked🀣

        1. I’m probably much older than you so my reference is from the 1974 movie Blazing Saddles by Mel Brooks.

    1. How do you feel about trying 5 new letters, instead of trying to place the yellow one?

That’s what I do, until I’ve narrowed the possibilities a lot.

      1. Perfectly OK not to always play in β€œHard Mode” (using all the clues)

      2. Playing 10 different letters in the first 2 guesses is a solid strategy.

I think many of the people who post here use that strategy and it works well.

I am not one of them, however.

        Playing words that use E, A, R, O, T, L, I, S, N, C is optimal if you’re going to do that.

Those letters are the most common in the 2315 original answer list.

      3. Kim S Avatar

I always try for the least number of guesses, as well as playing in hard mode, so I don’t prescribe to that method.

    2. Marcia Avatar

Does wl mean words left and if so, how do you know that?

      1. Yes, “WL” means “Words Left”.

I think the NYT analysis tool (WordleBot) tells you when you plug it in to see how your guesses compare to the Bot.

NYT, will ask you if you “Did you beat the Bot?”. If you click on that option, it will analyze your guesses for the day.

I am unable to check it myself, because I don’t have a subscription to the NYT games. This is probably good, because then I would be addicted to Spelling Bee and a bunch of other games as well. I digress.

I believe there are online tools that will help you analyze your guesses as well. I don’t use them either.

Yes, I overlooked the e when I considered ZEBRA! I took a shot w unused UMBRA so I was saved from an easy oversight!

        1. sometimes it helps to play hard mode.

          1. Marcia Avatar

Hard mode would have allowed ZEBRA. Hard mode forces players to use all previously revealed, correct (green) and misplaced (yellow) letters in all subsequent guesses.
