⚠️ Hey Wordlers of the After Party!
I am completely triggered by today’s solution, DUNCE, which literally violated my inner child by unlocking a repressed memory of a toxic elementary school teacher.
It is especially hypocritical after reading the NYT article “Putting New York Times Games to the Test,” where tester Jackson Friese bragged that:
“games are meant to be fun for everyone” and that he wouldn’t want a word to play that’s “offensive to them or reminds them of something bad happening in the world.”
Well, Jackson, today’s word reminded me of my childhood trauma. To add insult to literal injury, copy editor Mr. Jackson justified his process by saying it’s hard to stay on top of things if you stick to the “same old, same old.”
Wow… “same old, same old”?! Are we seriously letting this blatant, microaggressive ageism slide, or are we going to call out the NYT for throwing an entire elderly demographic under the bus by equating “old” with being stagnant and useless?
Tracy Bennett, unless we get an immediate safe space, a content warning on the app, and a public apology for this literal violence, I am officially declaring that the NYT Games team canceled!

So sorry Christine for your experience and having it brought to mind.
I avoided playing that word until it was inevitable. It is such a terrible label. I think of all the undiagnosed ADHD and autistic kids that have suffered being labeled with that word in the past. Surely we should be doing better now.
Hope you can use this recent experience to process and deal with the past and be freed to enjoy the future more. -

My wife actually said she liked this better than Eyes Without a Face (1960). Clearly there’s no accounting for taste. … I mean, she’s with *me*.

I seriously redid my list to include ADDs and 1YRs to try to move off of this word that I been guessing for the last 5 times this pattern came up.
RAISE leaves 10OG NU, 9 ADDs, 5 1YRs.
DUNCE gives me a 3 in 7 of the 10 OGs.
Only FEMME, MELEE and TEPEE gives me a choice.
This is presuming that it’s an OG NU.
I didn’t want to play it, because I’m beginning to buy into the theory that she’s avoiding negative words.
If I was considering all 3 lists as a whole, I might have played BOULE, but its WB% is only 53.
Good problem to have. But what do I play next time? FUDGE? BOULE? MELEE?

All this said, the question form requirement is a pretty ingenious bit of game show craft that adds one simple rule to a University Challenge style trivia game that injects a two syllable beat before each answer, allowing the viewing audience time to answer before the contestants.

Perhaps all of the cartoon dunce caps helped to erode its isolating power, and ‘A Confederacy of Dunces’ helped invigorate its targeted attack as punching upward.
I don’t know. I was on the fence about it. It does feel relatively mild even if it does only have a negative meaning.
