Thankfully I did not think of the NU GROPE, so I went with PROVE, a 1st year PU.
===========================================
Grid art: a side view of a disgusting pie of St. Louis–style pizza with PROVEl cheese. That is not a typo: “Provel cheese is a white processed cheese product made from a blend of cheddar, Swiss, and provolone cheeses infused with liquid smoke.”
I once visited St. Louis, and was warned by many students there not to try the pizza because it was disgusting. I was determined to try it anyway, because how bad could pizza be? Well, let’s just say I should have listened.
🍕 No! Those cheeses do not go together especially with liquid smoke. 🤢
“Where there’s liquid smoke there’s
firepizza.”A friend and I tried a new restaurant and we chose a chicken entree. It had a smoky taste to it which seemed unusual so we asked the owner/chef how he created the flavoring. He said (quite proudly) oh, when I opened the fridge I noticed that some of the chicken smelled a little, so I bleached that part of the chicken and then I added liquid smoke to the pan.
Yuk! Needless to say we never returned.
Wow! 😬 … ‘Once more please, a little louder and into this microphone.’
… …
My wife and I once made a curry for a family potluck. Our normal curry pot was dirty so we had to use a different one with a thinner bottom. Some said, ‘Oooo, nice! How did you get that smokey flavor?’ I replied, ‘By burning it.’

Thanks Jeb for not just having a dated list, but one you can use a comprehensive search on mobile.
Saved this disaster (a repeat) from being an unmitigated disaster. My default would be to go in alph-order and yeah.
I did prole even though it’s not on the list, but I wanted to try for an add before a repeat (adds are good we need more)

That’s an epic grid art, Obi Wan!
Tried an 🅰️ word again to no avail (stupid 🔮), but at least it was helpful. I was pretty sure it would be a ♻️, but had to give GROPE a shot, like a good Nerdler 🧮🧪🔬📊📈📋 🤓. Then it was a guessing game between ERODE, PROVE, and WROTE, which were the 3 oldest ♻️. I was 🍀 enough to ⛏️ the right one.

I GROPEd for a two-fer with a NU option, and found myself PROBE-ing among the PROLEtariat, PRONE to PROVE that I can do it in four.
I turned to the Navy, sealing the solution among today’s 15 second-guesses. Which PROVEs you can always rely on the Marines.
I didn’t even consider PRONE #1212, because it wasn’t a 1YR.
So, I only had PROLE and PROVE. So, just guessed.

I think the only time it will be 0 skill is if you gain no new information (which I don’t think is the case here) OR you put yourself in a situation where you can’t guarantee a win.
I’m guessing the latter is what happened here, but it worked out in the end!

I only came up with 7 of the 10 words that the WB identified for turn 3 possibilities.
GROPE was the NU, but I would have bet my mortgage that the NYT would not allow this word to be it given all the hubbub in the PRESS about the Cornell 7.
That meant a PU. I came up with BROKE (672), ERROR (71), PROBE (545), PRONE (1212), PROVE (163) and PRUNE (1044).
I normally go with the oldest PU, but thought a Triple R is a horrible filter, and PROVE was the only other 1st year PU so I went with that, to my satisfaction. A little luck was nice
I bet you are correct about the grope! I never consider these things… good work 🧠
While I agree that the timing with current events makes it less likely right now, I think GROPE could still be a Wordle of the day in the future.
Unlike words that are derogatory, anatomically sexual or ‘vulgar’, or purely connected to violent acts, GROPE, for lack of a better way of putting it, has range. One can grope for their keys in a dark room, or grope for the perfect word in their mind, or even, though sexual again, grope consensually. So it may still be the Wordle word. … Probably not with odds as high as AROSE or TREAD, but still possible.
On the topic, I actually chose PROVE over PROLE because I question if PROLE has any positive or even neutral connotations. Laborer and certainly blue collar can be used in positive ways. PROLE, not so much.
🤯 Coincidentally just came across an article about TB in the NYT from 2023 on this very subject… TB says:
“One time, I randomly selected words, and I had ‘grope’ and ‘gonad’ in a row,” she said. “That doesn’t seem very wise.” (Needless to say, neither made it past her computer screen.)”
https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/31/insider/tracy-bennett-brings-whimsy-to-wordle.html?smid=url-share
Great find! Theoretically, she could still allow GROPE and GONAD to appear separately in the future with more separation between them, but I could also see her not wanting either.

It’s been about 13 days since the last 1YR. This is judging by turning back the pages on my journal. I haven’t entered them into my spreadsheet for about a week while I’m on vacation.
RAISE leaves 5 OG NU.
TRUCE is the best one to give you any of the other 4 due to R2, U and C.
TRUCE leaves only GROPE. So, I play that.
It’s not an OG NU.
What’s left?
PROLE – ADD 47% (a bit low)
PROVE #163
AROSE players probably did well with this one.

I don’t think you overthought anything here.
I’ve been overthinking a lot thru August, September & this month JD …
I get an instinctual 2nd word…. and think – I must search through the options first, and time after time I’ve used a different word @ #2 – and then gone back to my original (& correct) guess at #3
missed quite a few 2s this way 🙄
The tee shirt words…love it!

🤔 uhh wait…isn’t #2 always your 2nd guess??? 🤷♂️ don’t think you want to start overthinking overthinking…you may never get over thinking it. 😉😎🤯
Err, no way – not to my brain it aint!
the 2nd word is only the one I choose to ‘enter’ in position 2
regularly different to my original guess for position 2
requiring me to enter my 2nd guess in position 3.
in which position it often becomes the solve word
you are, however, technically correct 🤷♀️😉
