    2. When you compare the K-Bot’s analysis of repeat vs. NU, you do have to consider whether the two words have the same WB weight.

If the weights are different, that will affect the K-Bot’s % estimation in addition to the age of the repeat!

🥸 Christine the Benevolent Slater in EZ Mode

Oh, weight… i had checked all the WB scores before my 2nd word play and the difference between them was negligible. Not enough to matter at all.

In the 🤖 analysis afterwards, it was the same. The very best I can do is make a note in my file/chart that the probability for nu=1p for the next time I get this pattern. Right? 🧐

As long as I keep using Slate, I’ll only be able to maintain my high level of 3s anyway, not gonna get a bunch of 1s and 2s with Slate. Slate is for the long game not for a high rolling game of excitement and big wins.

Maybe that’s just who I am and resistance is f.utile.

        1. Yes, it does seem that the K-Bot believes that NU=1P! NU and 1P don’t seem to have occurred at the same rate thus far, so I’m curious if the K-Bot knows something we don’t, or if it’s just making a rough estimate that isn’t quite accurate.

Hmmm, … now what could have put SLOOP into my head. I guess we’ll never know.

I too thought of The Beach Boys with this one. I actually thrifted a 45 of ‘Sloop John B’ not many years back. Lucky find.

I can appreciate what The Beach Boys created. But I still have residual ‘that’s not my music’ feelings about them having been a long time fan of instrumental surf bands.

I love how our nerdle discussions spin off into the ultimate random playlist. Thanks to the After Party, my spotify queue jumps from The Cure to John Prine to Bacharach, and then straight into The Surfaris.

👩🏻‍🎤 From new waves to literal waves 🏄🏼‍♀️

Mike S how much earlier did instrumental surf bands start vs Beach Boys? Who are your faves?

      1. I don’t know a lot of the history. Surf culture was getting very popular in the late 50s. I feel like that, mixed with the instrumental emphasis (especially electric guitar) of mid 50s rockabilly, opened the door for the success of The Ventures and Dick Dale & The Deltones. After them, and seemingly simultaneously to be honest, a bunch of surf bands popped up, like grunge bands and Nirvana.

It looks like The Beach Boys were in the early 60s mix of the surf scene genre, but with focus of vocals and harmonizing and much less on instrumentation. And this is where I sound judgey. They took the best of the doo wop barbershop style of Jan & Dean and the like, multiplied the harmonies, and made it feel less bubblegum by focusing it on a popular subculture of the time. Listen to Jan & Dean’s ‘Little Old Lady From Pasadena’ and tell me that isn’t the duo trying to claim the sound that could have been theirs.

To actually answer you question, I like a lot of the early instrumental surf bands: The Lively Ones, The Challengers, The Champs, The Rumblers, The Trashmen. I like newer stuff: Los Straightjackets, Satan’s Pilgrims, The Wipeouters (Devo without the hats) … okay, none of those are especially new. 😁

But there’s just something about that surf sound. Some of the songs are just like vocal standards. The Cramps’ ‘Surfin’ Bird’ is just as much fun as The Trashmen’s original version. It’s fun to hear all kinds of takes on ‘Miserlou’, ‘Wipeout’, and ‘Church Key’. It’s just good stuff. That’s probably a big part of it. There are occasional mellow instrumental surf songs, but I doubt I’ve heard a sad one.

        1. For the record (no pun intended) I’m not a big fan of The Ventures, early style pioneers and local heroes though they may be.

From what I’ve seen from the albums I’ve come across, they took the success of their first two records and parlayed that into a career of cranking out album after album filled with covers of soundtracks and other popular non-surf genre music.

I know that’s an oversimplification of what they created. But there’s a line between experimenting with styles and selling out. And I have my opinion on which side of the line they fell on.

          1. You have a varied TASTE in MUSIC, as you have also picked up on a couple of my METAL references

          2. Sounds like a lot of Wordlers here have a pretty wide appreciation for music.

            But, yeah …,

The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, The Ramones, Black Flag*, Motorhead*, David Bowie, Fleetwood Mac, Elliott Smith*, Sleater-Kinney*, Metallica, The Donnas*, Brad Mehldau*, Johnny Cash, Suzanne Cox (oh, and her family I suppose), Bad Livers*, Joan Jett*, Roy Orbison, Aimee Mann, Elvis Costello, Jonathan Richman*, Tom Petty, Tom Waits, Blondie, The Cars, Cyndi Lauper, Metric, Arthur Lyman, Raidiohead, Marcy Playground, Reigning Sound*, The Goo Goo Dolls (Jed and earlier, before they became the band my wife likes), The Butthole Surfers, The Registrators, The Coathangers, Zoobombs, The Vapors, Actual Tigers, Bongos Bass & Bob, Weird Al*, … Captain Bog & Salty*.

Mike S, what are the * asterisks for? I only know about half of these—very obscure. Many of them are favorites, though.

Are you also a concert-goer, too? Of all those you list, I’ve only seen 3. John Jett (80s), The Cars (80s), and I did see Weird Al last summer (and had backstage passes so I have a photo with him).

In the 80s I listened to Butthole Surfers (I smoke Elvis Presley’s toenails when I wanna get high—one of my oft repeated 80s phrases). I discovered by chance when looking at my kid’s spotify account that she follows Butthole Surfers. 😳 How random.

My wife and I have seen Weird Al at least 6 times. The summer we met in the 90s we went to a fair in Oregon. We were wandering around and happened upon the SRO stage, and there was Weird Al. We saw him two more times for admission price only at two different fairs. Eventually we started paying to see him. 😁

            Live shows. … Good times.

Super duper cool you and wifey are into Weird Al! And, do you dress up for the concerts? Hawaiian Shirts or 80s fashion? His concerts are high energy, several costume changes, and hilariously fun. Everyone in the audience is singing along. And, his regular warm up performer, Puddles Pity Party is worth the admission alone. Wow. So much talent and fun at those concerts. Your wife is either a really good sport or super fun like her husband! Either way… you saw the recent movie, no doubt… The scene where all the 80s icons are at a house party hosted by Dr. Demento. OMG so good.

          8. This last show my wife wore her Weird Al sweatshirt. I wore a Hawaiian shirt, open, with a Puddles Pity Party shirt underneath. Puddles is a really fun time.

This Summer we didn’t realize we were catching the tail end of a tour that we saw a show from last year. So Puddles had pretty much the same set, which didn’t hit quite as funny as the first time around. But that’s on us. I’m sure he would have a fun new set on another tour.

In the movie Weird I always look for Salvador Dali in that back yard party scene. He’s played by Emo Philips, who has opened for Weird Al on some previous tours.

And, yes, my wife is super cool and fun, *and* she’s a good sport. Plus she’s a great board game competitor/partner. 😊

Enjoyed some of your obscure instrumental surf music today. The Trashmen are the only ones I’d heard of. The depth of your knowledge is incredibly fun. This is why I love it here at the AP!

😬 Just looked up Little Titch. If he were alive today, he’d simultaneously be getting modern disability accommodations and also canceled for blackface.

Mildred, things are getting weird. 😉

      2. I saw the Buthole Surfers live in the mid-80s. They did a very cool version of Sweat Leaf (Originally by Black Sabbath)

🥸 Christine the Benevolent Slater in EZ Mode

That’s so random. I’ll look up Sweat Leaf cover.

🤯 Am I wrong, but, isn’t it kinda wild that Mike, you and I have even heard of this band much less gone to a concert? It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Kim also knows the band.

        2. Very cool, JD! … If memory serves, their version was called ‘Sweet Loaf’. 😁

Never saw them live. That would have been cool.

Best alternative/punk cred I have was seeing Black Flag with Henry Rollins fronting. That felt so underground. We got to the venue and there sign on the door saying the show had to move to another venue, in a town several miles away!

          1. Black Flag was Hard Core Punk.

            You were the real deal!

If memory serves me right, some of the music for the movie Repo Man (with Emilio Estevez) is from Black Flag and Circle Jerks.

I went to the Buthole Surfers with a guy in my design class who went by “Flat Top Joe”, because he had one of those types of haircuts.

This was all in Buffalo, NY.

            Those were good times!

          2. Repo Man has a fantastic soundtrack. I still have my vinyl for this soundtrack too. 😎

Super fun movie too that definitely spoke to me, and still does.

Black Flag was on that soundtrack. At one point Emilio Estevez, while he’s drinking some BEERs, starts rambling off TV show titles. Those are actually lines from Black Flag’s song ‘TV Party’.

This and the Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 soundtrack were probably my favorite of that era.

            Good times, indeed.

    1. MJM,

I try to always start with a new (no repeat) word. Our own “LEAST was a genius word” used to call herself “LEAST is a genius word” until it became an answer.

Do you prefer starter utility over luck o’ the 1?

  22. ⬜⬜⬜⬜🟨 TEARS
    🟩⬜🟩⬜⬜ SHOCK
    🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩

TEARS – my current starting word
SHOCK – decided to go with a words starting with S. I like my second word to be an unused word with both C and P, but couldn’t come up with one that started with S, so I looked for unused S-words with a C or a P. I was shocked that SHOCK was still unused.
At that point I could see two unused possibilities – SLOOP and SNOOD. SLOOP was the one so thought of first, and my first thought is usually the right one, so I went with that.

    1. Are you concerned TEARS is a plural “S” word and not likely an answer?

      1. To some extent, yes, but I’m thinking of it as the third person singular present tense form of the verb. Which also seems a bit unlikely, but I believe there have been a handful of times when the “ends in S” form of a verb has been used, so I’m still using it. How I got there: I used TEARY for a very long time, until Wordle used it. I no longer remember what I used after that, but eventually Wordle used it. I think I played around with a couple other starting words, but I still missed TEARY, so I decided to use TEARS.

        1. The WordleBot doesn’t think TEARS is a possible answer, so I think it’s very unlikely.

You are right that TEARS is also a verb, but it seems that any regular plural/past tense, even if it has another meaning, is removed from the possible answer list.

I am pretty sure the only plurals used thus far are irregular ones like ATRIA, CACTI, GEESE, WOMEN, etc.

          1. Thank you! This is super helpful. I cancelled my NYT subscription some tIme ago so I don’t get the WordleBot.
