Is this some kind of joke?!? 🃏 My first choice off my Starts List for today was WAKEN. It felt right. But I paused before I hit enter, reminding myself not to be hasty. I checked FF and 2315 to ensure it was a good start. That’s when I saw that it was not on the 2315. Oops! I physically removed it from my Starts List before scrolling up to find ORATE. That seemed so good that I didn’t even stop to check the 2315, just went ahead and entered it. Meh, not great. Returning to the hesitant tone, I did all kinds of analysis 🧐 on my 2nd guess before picking CAGEY. At this point, seeing the A and E in the right places, I decided to pull WAKEN out of the trash 🗑️ . YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!! 🤦🏻♀️😣
It’s a difficult balance ⚖️ between going with your gut and being prepared.
Ironically, ORATE isn’t on the 2315 either, which I didn’t realize until I started writing this and it occurred to me that I hadn’t checked. So much for avoiding haste. 🙄😖

I applaud you for doing it silently. As a retired editor that started as a proofreader at age 15, I have never been one to keep the corrections to myself. Though I never do it to be critical! It is always with the intention of being informative. Whenever I make an error, I welcome the corrections.

Love the words you posted so looked up Captain Bogg & Salty. Didn’t know the band but enjoyed the song from their Pegleg Tango (lol) album on YT!
They were a really cool pirate themed band out of Portland, OR. When our children were young they were touring libraries and playing for audiences of children.
For something really upbeat and pirated try their hot ‘Pieces of Eight’.
I really liked the words you posted, too, so took a listen to Sea Monster and in this song they remind me very much of the band They Might Be Giants who put out several kids albums. I liked pieces of 8ight, too—I wish we had a pirate band here in MN. We do have Veggie Tales …

I saw the *A*E* pillars of doom after TARSE. The best word I could think of for second was PANEL. Three strong consonants and a test of the EL ending. The ending letter turned out to be N. I don’t think OAKEN would have occurred to me, but finally WAKEN did! Satisfied with solve in four.☺️

I play STRANDS now which Tracy also edits. She has had many calendar related puzzles there.
I played that one for a short period. The only other NYT game I played consistently—over 1,000 games—is spelling bee. Sam Ezersky is even more vexing than Tracy, though!
I got to the point where all I did each day was get the pangram first and then I was done. I stopped playing once I found the after party-way more fun time than pangrams. 🥳
