Thanks! My NYT stats say 1678, but as I explained on a couple weeks ago, it is much more than that because my stats before 7/12/22 were lost. I would estimate the true number to be around 1880+. My current streak is 1146. My solve stats are:
        1 = 17
        2 = 254
        3 = 606
        4 = 523
        5 = 219

My strategy is trying to use the 10 most common letters in Wordle answers for my first 2 guesses, giving preference to a first guess that ends in E and looking to see if any of the 10 most common letters have not been used recently. I also consider which words with common letters have not yet been used as a first guess, such as Cleat or Arose. If I get good information with my first guess I use that to determine my next guess which sometimes leads to a score of 2; always a happy event.
Today I got it down to Missy or Wispy using: The Wordle Solver – Answer Helper Tool – Try Hard Guides. It does not give the answer, but it shows possible answers based on the green and yellow letters you have and it considers the gray letters that are not in the word. Prior to finding the Wordle Helper Tool, I made a list my green and yellow letters and their positions and a list of gray letters and then read through the list of 2,309 words on the original NYT Answer List to see what might work; very time-consuming.
After getting a list of possible answers, I use the FF filter to rule out the words that have already been used and determine if there are any possible Repeats.
I have never been addressed as “Missy,” but depending on how it is used, Missy can be considered derogatory to young women or girls, so I went with Wispy.

    1. Your strategy sounds very solid to me, and your results show your success.

Have you considered simply crossing off or marking an “X” next to the words that have been played on the 2315 list? This would effectively shorten the time to scan that list.

      1. Now I just count on the excellent FF filter to rule out words that have been used as answers and I can record the dates, which seems to be especially important for those tricky Repeats!

Well done. Three is a great score today. 🙌

    3. Very creative grid art!

Out of curiosity, does your spreadsheet automatically find the words remaining for you, or do you do it manually for each outcome?

      1. It’s actually a bit more complicated than that.

        I have columns in my spreadsheet for R A I S and E.

If no R, then nothing in that square.

If R is in the wrong position, I put in “r1” (and I color the square red-orange)

If R is in the correct position, I put in “R2” (and I color the square green).

        I do similar for A, I, S, E.

At the same time, I have a column called “Wordle Puzzle#”.

        So, then I sort the entire sheet by “Wordle Puzzle#”, “R”, “A”, “I”,”S”, “E”.

This puts the case where I match no letters at the top and ALL the worst case scenarios to the top of the list. Those contain the most words.

When a puzzle is complete, I search for the word “WISPY”, enter in today’s puzzle number, and then sort the whole sheet.

This moves the played word from the word lists and it ends up on top with the rest of the played words.

I use Excel formula and conditional formatting to do most of the work for me.

Then, the bottom part of the list feeds the dynamic table of the letters that remain. It’s the same table as Try Hard Guides except that I only analyze the unplayed words. Plus, I fix the mistake they make in their table (e.g. counting all 3 P’s in PUPPY.)

I also have a daily journal where I keep the puzzle I do every day and it also contains a chart of the words in every return pattern from RAISE that has been played so far. If a new pattern emerges, I create a new chart.

When the words get played, I cross those words off these lists.

Based on that, I consider whether I need to change my “Second Guess”. I also have a sheet that summarizes my second guesses for each return pattern and the number of words left for each one. I make sure the sum of the remaining words equals that of the actual remaining words in the 2315 (The OG) list.

      1. You guys are certainly giving me some “take home reading” for later.

Who’s the teacher now? (Not me).

      2. Thank you for that link. I don’t understand most of it, but I noticed this statement, “Once the entropy for each of the 12,972 words is known, the words were sorted in descending order such that the topmost word has the highest entropy.”

The full version of that list would be quite helpful! Or maybe it would make the game too easy?

        1. If you go to https://wordletools.azurewebsites.net/starterranking and unselect all rank methods except “Entropy,” you basically get the same list.

I don’t think it would make the game too easy. If you want, you can use it to choose a starting word or compare two guesses to see which might be better.

🥸 Christine the Benevolent Slater in EZ Mode

… and finally, I bet not a one of them can make their grid look like coastal property falling into the ocean.

    4. I don’t think it’s all that exciting of an study. It uses an entropy-based solution method, which is not new. For example, here is a video explanation of this method from four years ago: https://youtu.be/v68zYyaEmEA?si=nnm7vWro4qDAIKZM.

The paper’s claim to novelty is that they are validating their entropy-based method by comparing it to a “letter distribution strategy” that they say is how real-world players often play.

Here is that “letter distribution strategy” they compare to:

      1. Start with any word that contains the letters “a”, “e” and “r”
      2. Essentially, play in hard mode, and if the new word has letters that weren’t in the last guess, prefer a word with the most common new letter(s) possible.

These are pretty basic tactics that I suppose may be representative of anyone who plays without thinking too much about the strategy.

So the paper’s conclusion: their entropy method (which is not novel) is better than this lame made-up strategy.

        1. I consider the Easy mode and the Hard mode to be 2 different games.

If I played Hard Mode, I think my strategy would be completely different.

I might be more apt to avoid losing rather than solving in the fewest number of guesses.

I may try it on the inevitable reboot of Wordle.

          1. The thing I don’t like about hard mode is that I think it’s essentially impossible for a human to never lose over time without some very advanced strategy (even most bots fail occasionally).

          2. It should be called helper mode NOT hard mode the reasons can be debated. It all depends whether you’re playing for enjoyment or competing for lowest average. I have friends/acquaintances who play every every day as if it’s the first time they play. They don’t even know what the * means. They look up nothing but enjoy the game.

  29. ⬛⬛⬛🟨⬛ AROSE
    🟨⬛⬛⬛⬛ STUNK
    ⬛🟩🟩⬛🟩 DISHY
    🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩

Not the best day for AROSErs in Hard Mode.

A question: do others here have a daily head-to-head with a friend? We two are experiencing a spooky convergence of guesses recently, with 6 identical guess sequences over the past 11 days:
    AROSE UNITE CHIVE ELIDE BEIGE
    AROSE UNITY CHINK BLIND
    AROSE PRINT CRUMB DRYLY
    AROSE UNITY NIFTY
    AROSE RINSE
    AROSE STUNK DISHY 🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩
    and yesterday mine was:
AROSE CLEAT LEANT DEALT while his second was CHEAT (pu), nearly another snap!
He only lives 7 miles away, so maybe Wordle ESP is especially strong?

      1. Thanks for your comment. Explanation of my avatar: I used to make leaded glass windows and this is part of one of mine, a design derived from a window in the ancient mosque in Cordoba, Spain, now a cathedral.

👍 nice work! displaying small within in the avatar circle gives it a really interesting geometric three dimensional movement quality. very cool!

        3. Your avatar caught my eye as well. Great work!

I agree with kralc. The photograph angle and your choice of centering within the avatar make it look like the brighter circle, defined by the chevrons made of yellow and white, is a floor, with the outer pattern looking a bit like a wall of the dome created by the top arc of avatar. Very cool effect.

I looked up the Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba. Your work looks very much like the original. Again, nicely done. Your skill is evident.

          1. Thank you all!

    2. My wife and I share our Wordle play every day.

She plays similar words to me, because she sometimes can scroll back through our text messages and can play the same 1st and 2nd words. We share the screen captures of the games. (Incidentally, I have a photo album on my iphone of EVERY game that I’ve played including the first game. This is proof that I should be committed.)

Other times, she just remembers the words I’ve played before.

So, there have been numerous times that we’ve had identical solves.

She quite often beats me! LOL.

    1. Question for Jeb here.

The time stamp under Judy S’s name shows ‘Sep 15, 26 – 9:46 pm ET’. A few more people above also have posting times before the 16th.

I assume these times are actually Pacific times, showing when they were posted from the point of view of my location.

Why the ET at the end of the timestamps?

I notice ‘ET’ at the end of everyone’s timestamp, including mine and even those in Oz and The Shire.

      1. The time zone is based on a public IP lookup database and is independent of everything else.

The WordPress server runs in central time and that comes into play, but mostly with background stuff.

The WordPress site is set default Eastern mainly since New York Times is Eastern. (So am I.)

In theory, all of our comment and replies should show publish date/times based on Eastern Time (the WordPress site.) But now that you’ve pointed it out, I’ll have to do some digging.

Hawaii time is important based on scripts that run to update the lists and run CloudFlare cache purges, although those are all scheduled in the server’s Central Time.

Daylight Savings gives me a headache and I quit doing the math.

Your local device time is important in calculating how to highlight / show the “Today” party button and is involved in calculating “New” highlights using locally stored “last visit time.”

There’s a lot going on with Time. I’ll report back on your observation if I can figure it out and if I can find the time. 😉

        1. If it helps: I live in the eastern time zone and what I see in my above comment is
          Sep 16, 26 – 12:46 am ET
I don’t remember exactly when I submitted my comment but that seems about right.
So it does seem like what Mike is seeing is ET converted to PT and it is mislabeled.

      Hi Judy,

I played the same today, but the bot also list DISHY as a third NU

      1. I don’t use the bot, but I checked a couple of online lists and it looks to me like DISHY is allowed as a guess but not as an answer.

😆 I didn’t see this at the time – but (if only I had the skills of TedOz) an audio of me saying ‘fish n chips’ or anything at all for that matter, in my kiwi accent would debunk that one…..

It is so fun stumbling across the old CRAIC when searching for something else…. 😄
