Jeb, thanks for the interesting info! I never heard of orcin until I did a search for those letters on the Word Hippo site. The Oxford Dictionary defines it as “a crystalline compound extracted from certain lichens and used to make dyes.” Typically, my first 2 guesses contain the 10 most popular letters in Wordle answers based on the original NYT list. Orcin was/is the perfect companion to Slate as they form one of the word-pairs that contain those 10 most popular letters.

RAISE leaves OG words RECUT, REEDY and RULER.
I am starting to include the ADDs in a secondary list. Those are ROPER (49%), REPOT(51%), RECON(54%), REDUX(58%).
RECUT is the perfect filter for all of these words, because it starts with RE. The C would given me RECON. The U would have given me REDUX. The T gives me REPOT. No U in ROPER so I would get that one too.

Prof. Mike’s group word of the weekTARPS produced the same result today as yesterday: floating R in position 3. In that game RE turned out to be the starting letters. After CRIED I tried R in position 1 followed by other vowels. RULER is a very common word, especially in these interesting times, and it was not PU. Now it is.

Yesterday, there was a friendly debate between JD and jeb about whether the repeat odds are static each day or if they increase as the days since last repeat increase. A few days ago, I used a regression model that suggested that the odds do increase over time, but I thought of another, more intuitive way to test this without using advanced modeling.
If the odds of a repeat are static each day, as JD pointed out, we can calculate the theoretical cumulative odds that a repeat will occur over a span of X days. We can then compare this to the actual cumulative proportion based on the 23 repeats (at 11.2% total repeat rate) that have occurred so far. I have done so here:

The theoretical column shows the calculated odds of a repeat happening by that number of days, assuming the odds are a static 11.2% each day.
I believe that that this indicates that the repeat odds are not, in fact, a static 11.2% each day, but that there is growing “repeat pressure” that increases the odds of a repeat as more days go by without one. (I don’t know if this would be an intentional choice or just the subconscious whims of Tracy Bennett.)
Notice that the actual proportion on days soon after the prior repeat is much lower than the theoretical odds, but jumps up to surpass the theoretical odds by 14 days. This is the pattern I would expect if Tracy were hesitant to put repeats too close together, becoming more and more likely to choose a repeat word as time goes on.
Is my logic sound?

Also, while I fundamentally agree with jeb that the repeat gets more likely over time, I do think that FF’s specific cutoff of 10+ days for “high” likelihood of repeat is misleading, as JD argued, assuming “high” is supposed to mean >50%.
Even though the CUMULATIVE repeat rate is 63.6% by 10 days, I doubt that the odds of a repeat occurring on any given INDIVIDUAL day surpass 50% until closer to day 17, according to my regression model from a few days ago (which I will say, matches the actual cumulative proportions here fairly well, increasing my confidence that the model was done correctly).

medium (7) = 5 to 9
high (11) = 10 or higherOnly a guess, but whoever is deciding this seems to have a 2 week deadline to get the repeat in, and sometimes they miss the deadline because of weekends or holidays. Procrastination works against LOW.
None of this is an exact science and it is not *real* random with a cap and bias to high.

You’re imagining things that may not exist (like 2 week deadlines).
I can tell you something.
There are supposed to be 3 REPEATs coming in the next 32 days.
That is a fact.
What days they are coming? Nobody knows.
Additionally, Nothing can stop the NYT from adding more or removing the ones that are already there; so, how useful is this information?

You are absolutely correct that the next repeat is more likely to be at or after day 10 than it is to be before day 10.
However, that is about the group of 10+ days compared to the group of 1–9 days and doesn’t mean that the repeat is likely to happen on any particular individual day.
It is entirely possible that you are correct about there being a 2-week-ish deadline, after which Tracy is much more likely to add in the repeat. But, even if it is much more likely near/after this deadline compared to before, that does not necessarily imply that the odds for, say, day 15 are >50%.
For example, here are the results from my earlier regression model for days 10 through 18 for the odds of a repeat on any given day:
Day 10: 16.9%
Day 11: 20.5%
Day 12: 24.5%
Day 13: 29.1%
Day 14: 34.1%
Day 15: 39.6%
Day 16: 45.3%
Day 17: 51.1%
Day 18: 56.9%All of those would be considered “high” repeat odds in your grouping. 16.9% at day 10 is certainly high compared to day 1, but if we assume “high” means >50% odds, that doesn’t happen until day 17.

We don’t have enough data for regression models. We only have 22 repeats (after Ground Hog Day.)
But we do see patterns, an editors comments, and what appears to be more behavior than random generation.
We also have JD’s site that glimpses into the future which is fact-ish, although NYT could change the next 30 days at any time. But I don’t analyze that, so don’t know.

The daily WORDLE words aren’t random, and if Tracy reads our after-party(?), she might feel challenged to play a trick or two.

She can pick any 5-letter word at any time.
Sometimes the words are common and other times they are rare (PSHAW, LORIS, KNELL, GUNKY…)
She can do back to back REPEATs (already done)

All these things are within the range of outcomes.
Also, I am going on the presumption that they are tacking words onto the end of a queue, but really nothing is stopping her from inserting a different word for tomorrow’s puzzle than what is currently scheduled.

So, keep putting up “high repeat rate” warnings and a few people on this site will guess REPEATs on the days that it wont happen.
They’re 2 just became 3 and their 3 just became 4 with no chance at 2.

I had not read this before. It is from 2024 before repeats and ADDs had only started:
“Bennett told USA TODAY … words for the game are decided up to 6 weeks in advance. Explaining the process behind the word selection, Bennett said that the words are selected at random, using a random number generator, from a word bank that has enough words to run the game through 2027.”
“We already have like a database of words that Josh Wardle created when he created the game,” said Bennett. “And I’ve been adding a few words. I think I’ve added about 25 words to the list so far.”
So they did introduce randomization, replacing Josh’s original fully randomized list that leaked into the public. Largely the same words left, but newly sorted.

I still think guessing the REPEAT when the ODDs are “high” is a trap play.We can’t predict the exact day it will happen.
For me, if the possibilities come down to an unplayed OG word and the REPEAT <#237, I'm playing the unplayed OG word every time.
I'll also play the unplayed ADD (with WB% over 40%) every time over the REPEAT.
And like today, I played the unplayed OG words over the unplayed ADDs.
I don't even consider the REPEATs if the other options are available.

Yes, I agree with your strategy because it seems that, on any given individual day, an unused word is more likely than a repeat, with the possible exception of when it gets up to 17+ days since the last repeat (my model has the odds at over 50% on day 17, but it could be that, as we get more repeat data, that will end up shifting).
I haven’t looked into the OG vs ADD data enough to comment on that, but I also always choose an unused over a PU word if I have the option.
