Tales From the CRYPT
… in Quordle
I’ve been playing CRYPT as a start word in Quordle since the topic came up over a month ago. I haven’t kept any specific statistics. But here are few details and observations:
– I failed one word once early on due to falling into a trap from still being a little random with my word choice. Currently I’m at a 30 day streak which is pretty good considering my max streak is 62.
– If CRYPT doesn’t have any hits on two or more words I’ll usually follow up with a strong word like leash. Otherwise, even with only hits in three words, I’ll often start at trying to position the letters I have, preferably using a couple of vowels.
– Once with CRYPT I succeeded in getting all four words in 5. That was only the fifth time I’ve done that in over 1500 plays.
– With a start word like TRACE I’d occasionally get a 6, and consider that a fortunate win, like getting a 2 in Wordle, or maybe a 2.5, a bit of luck mixed with some clever word choice. But a 7 was still a strong finish. My 8s are higher than my 7s by 75.
– With CRYPT 7 is the new 6. I think I’ve only gotten one 6, maybe two. Normally I’m getting 8s. Today was an 8.
– I seem encounter less stress when I do reach guess 9. I read that as I’m falling into fewer traps than before.

I had to look it up. I played 3579 games of Quordle, I did not score a 5. I think I was close once or twice.
I got a 6 – 28 times. 7 – 257 times.
I used to play Daily, Sequence, Weekly and Practice.
In the end, I was playing the same 4 start words in no particular order. CRAMP, FLINT, BUDGE and SHOWY
If I was close after 2 or 3 words, I went for it without the 4th word.
I had 35 losses.
I haven’t played since Xmas when I lost my cache two weeks later and my record went away.

Our play styles are pretty different, so not much in the comparison. But here are my numbers, playing regular daily Quordle only:

Matching no letters isn’t even the worst pattern! It’s I in the wrong position which leaves 39 words!
PUDGY is still the perfect filter for this one and leaves only PUTTY since I matched 3 letters in the right position.

Our time zone is so far ahead of America that it could spoil it for you if you accidentally clicked on the wrong day. For instance it is now over 12 hours since I posted my solution.

To avoid seeing “Tomorrow” the code displays the yellow “Today” button in the visitor’s time zone. So when you are playing your “Today” those of us 12 hours later are stills seeing “Today” in the second row.
I realize now those of you down-under may not have realized that extra “safety” feature in the U.I. but feel free to talk about your today’s answer on your today! (If you know what I mean.)

I always write the answer.
It’s personal preference.
We know the answer; so, it doesn’t matter.
I wish everyone would at least write down the guesses that lead up to the answer and it’s nice when it’s neatly to the right of the pattern of squares. That makes it easy to read.
I like to see what words people guessed and see what kind of strategy they use; so, I can learn something from it.

Thanks for asking this Judy. I never considered that our early time zone friends might not realize the “Today” button is dynamic based on the visitor’s time zone and helps keep us from peeking at tomorrow. So it is fine for them to include the answer in our Tomorrow. We’re not supposed to visit Tomorrow yet!

I play CRAMP, FLINT, BUDGE and SHOWY for Quordle.
One of the first 3 are worth a try with your method.
If you match no letters, any one of the other 3 work.

Thanks for the suggestion JD, but RAMP & FLINT are pu’s so with the exception of todays (7/25) 2nd choice (where I was trying for a pu) & FRITZ (which I didn’t check was a pu)… of the 16 single-vowel non-dupl. consonants I have used since PSHAW on Wed 7/15 – none are pu
and as posted elsewhere – I have 42 (& still adding) to use….

I usually have to turn up my phone brightness to help with the early AM poor contrast in dark mode.

I can make adjustments. For main text it tends to be white on black. For secondary text, light blue on black. But I can see some other tweaking that needs to be done.
Are you set to “Auto” so it follows night / day mode? You can also set it to “Light” or set it to “Dark”.

I don’t have issues with the visuals on Five Forks, even when my phone decides it’s night mode time.
It’s Wordle that can be difficult due to my phone being in night mode in the AM, and playing the game in dark mode, which leads to the contrast between gray and dark gray on the Wordle keyboard being really subtle. But I get by.
… …I do have an idea regarding the ‘NEW’ posts. If there are some sort of marks to the sides of the ‘NEW’ label then a word find search could locate the new posts quickly without stopping at other uses of ‘new’, including older posts from our New Zealand friends.

Great idea…. so navigate quickly through NEW without just scrolling for highlights.
And since an on-page search is not something everyone knows how to do (especially on phone) maybe a “new hopper” link or button that only appears at top and only on new posts.

Interesting challenge for dark mode design– some devices have black squares and some have gray.
You can “fix” Five Forks to be “Light” all of the time if that helps.
