==========================================
What words would you move up or down in priority?
Any words to add to this list? Where would you rank that word?
JD – are all these words from something the NYT published? Otherwise, where do they come from?
These words come from the playable list of 10657 words.
These words are not on the 2315 list.
I sort of thought -ed endings like liked, loved, lived, etc., were deprecated.
They are. I left in adjectives and removed past tense verbs.
Let me know if you donβt want the adjectives. There are ones that got played
I image that if words like okapi or karoo or diwan were wordle answers, it would be the final nail in the coffin of wordle. β°οΈ
Rank 2: I would leave off any words that donβt mean anything in the USA. I would only want wordle answers that are in the realm of words average people might actually encounter. I know folks balked at pshaw, but at least I have heard and used that word. Most of the words on your list match that criteria.
Is your list just of words that are more frequent than the current NYT ADDs? If so, are there other potential ADDs that could/would be put on this list? Is this a subset of the dictionary that the wordlebot uses?
Sorry for being so inquisitive and verbose-but your idea here is interesting. π€
oops,,, you said above from the βplayable listβ¦β sorry for repeating question
Okapi is a well known word to animal lovers and I have seen it several times in the NYT crossword. If it is used in the crossword then I would consider it fair game for Wordle.
I would guess that, in general, those who play the NYT crossword (esp on Sunday) are a different animal than your average wordle players. I donβt play the crosswords except for the mini while Iβm waiting for the doctor. In the big crossword, there are many words and even if thereβs a word you donβt know, the crossing words may fill in letters. In wordle, thereβs just one important word. Itβs just a different animal than a crossword so I think it does matter. π₯Έ
Christine,
Thank you very much for reading through the list and for your feedback.
I think the familiarity of a word is relative. I have heard of OKAPI myself but not PSHAW, but that doesn’t make it a better word choice than PSHAW.
This entire list is generated from words that had better COCA scores than at least one of the 43 words that Tracy Bennett added which means they appear in print more often than GUNKY (at least).
KAROO and OKAPI are in Group 2; so, they are the bottom of my recommendations. Theoretically, I could leave the whole list of “Rank 2” off. Rank 9 words are my top recommendations.
Thanks once again for being inquisitive. I am looking for feedback.
JD
Thanks for your interesting project!
What is your goal with this list and what does the ranking mean? I canβt think of how to use it other than you are revealing words that cannot be answers which is a peek.π«£
So, the goal with this list is to recommend words that NYT could use for answers instead of repeating words.
As you know, up until 2/2/26, NYT had not repeated an answer.
All the answers but 31 came from the original answer list that Josh Wardle gave NYT when he sold them the game.
This list of approximately 700 words are words that I found that are not on this answer list that they could consider using as future answers (again, instead of repeating words that have already been played).
From the NYT (Tracy Bennett) perspective, they are running out of words to play. 509 words remain from this list. Only playing words from this list, makes the game too easy for those who know this.
I am looking for feedback from FF group to see which words are good suggestions for additions to the answer list. There may be words worth playing that are not on the answer list.
The ranking is putting words in Rank 9 as better word suggestions than Rank 8. Rank 8 are better than Rank 7 etc. That’s my opinion. Perhaps, others think that some of the other words that I rank highly are not so good and vice verse.
The ultimate idea is to go directly to NYT and suggest the words we like as words they could potentially use in the puzzle.
Tracy Bennett mentioned in her video that she is “open to suggestions”.
I think most of us would rather they not repeat previous solutions; so, this is a solution to that problem.
In regards to “peek”, I don’t know what you’re getting at. Any 5 letter word could potentially be the answer. We have no idea which words they are going to select. How would we know what words can or cannot be the answers?
What – not alphabetical JD ?? π
Good resource – I’m glad the date was noted on 7/22 so I could come back for a look
Go You on your mission, which could benefit us all π
Thank You
in NZ or Oz – there’d be words like whare, kiora ‘n’ ocker, smoko ….
I should have made it alphabetical.
I draw the “peek” line between past and future information. Past is what we have experienced. Future is drawing from code (not intended for player viewing.) Since your recommended words come from the 10,657 playable words and are *not* the answer words, then I can use this list as words I should not guess (to be an answer.)
I said that was the only thing I could figure out to do with the list, missing your intention to send these to Tracy. That was really my main question– what was your goal with the list. Now I know! Hope Tracy listens to you!
Wondering if it is necessary to be paying the $3 a month in order to qualify for the Beat the Bot badges
That would explain why I’ve never seen one.
I thought if I stopped paying, Iβd lose all my stats?
I’ve never paid and I’ve lost my stats at least 3 times.
I’ve complained and they only restore your stats back to a certain point.
My latest stats are the last 661 games I’ve played.
Taking that snapshot, it’s pretty darn good!
3.20 average. 661 game winning streak. 1-0. 2-81. 3-393. 4-166. 5-19. 6-2.
That tracksβlogically your game improved in the last 6xx games. Do you have a free account?
Yes. I canβt play any of the other games like Spelling Bee.
I pay $50 a year to NYT Games and donβt get a Beat the Bot badge nor see it is available to be earned. Has to be some other reason.
Also I thought you had to have a paid sub to keep your stats.
Wondering if playing on website or app makes a difference.
I play on app and do get beat the bot.
I also get beat the bot playing in Wordle Archives.
No!! I play on website.
My bad.
Could be. I play on App.
I wrote to the NYT asking about it twice.
I have now tried Wordle archive in app and still got beat the bot.
that is just plain wrong! You especially should see your badges on the APPβthereβs a top tab βMEβ where all badges are shown.
I have a subscription to both The New York Times and NYT Games. I have played on both apps and run WordleBot on both. I still havenβt gotten a Beat the Bot badge while beating it several times in the last week. π€·π»ββοΈ
I will likely reach out to Games support to find out whatβs going on.
Amazing!!
Wondering if it unintentionally varies with the time zone.
It couldnβt be a handicap measure for players as successful as you.
Meg,
Maybe they are rolling it out in different countries. Youβre in Australia. Has anyone in the US seen Beat the Bot badge?

I think the interesting thing about this list is that the unplayed ED words happen to be mostly past tense verbs.
It could be an indication that TB doesn’t intend to use these words in the puzzle.
All the EE options have been played except for past tense verbs.
Also CRIED and DRIED are almost cruel, because CRIER, DRIER, DRYER are also on the list. I wonder if some of the ER words are on the secret “taboo (1016)” list also.
What do you think?
Good theory, JD.
Suggested ADDs from the 10657 Playable List.
===============================
I will list these in order of the COCA score. The COCA score is how often these words are found in print per billion words.
I will group them vs. words that she already ADDed.
A lot of these are βEDβ words. / We can debate that later.
A couple may be controversial (e.g. BITCH, RAPED, PENIS) / Again, to be debated later on.
I would like to put these on a site where we can vote on them.

Happy World Emoji Day! Did you know that all emojis must be reviewed and approved by an international nonprofit organization called the Unicode Consortium? π€

β¬β¬π¨β¬π¨ Crane
β¬β¬β¬π¨β¬ Toils
π©π©π©π©π© Legal
Crane, Toils, got it down to Abled (usage 0.01 per million) and Legal (usage 90 per million). Legal has the double L and itβs more common than Abled or Pshaw. π
I did not know that about emoji’s. I am surprised that the EMOJI add didn’t happen today.
Brilliant solve in 3 by the way.
Your logic is spot on.

Unlike a few of the more intuitive players today I avoided the double letter for a couple of turns (especially because it was green off the bat) and settled for par.

β¬π¨π¨β¬π¨ SLATE
β¬π©β¬π©π© PENAL
π©π©π©π©π© LEGAL
π€ would have used RANGY as 2nd word; Scordle would have used LAPEL. Penal did leave me with 2 optionsβLEGAL & FECAL. I chose LEGAL because L+G is more common than F+C in wordle so made it more in my favor but not completely. Def not 50/50 though.
JD continuing the -ed conversation: One of the options after SLATE was ABLED. I like these types of -ED words to be in the dictionary because adding the ED turns the word into a new meaning & changes from being a verb to adjective or noun. Just a thought ππ€
Good thought. Some of these ED words have double meanings depending on the context.
TIRED is an interesting case.
ABLED is on the 2315 list already. There are quite a few ED words already on the list.
I think a few ED words could be added, but, perhaps, not all of them. We have to be selective.
I created a list of the ED words from the 2315 list above.
Cool beans!

Took a guess sheβd use double L. By my count there were at least 4 other options after STEAL.
Beat the Bot but still no badge!
Make sure your app is up to date.
@SherylL, I updated earlier this week.
@Christine, I am logged in and play from the Games app.
Same for me. Games app is up to date and I am logged in. I have beat the bot several times this week but have yet to see a badge.
Congrats on two! You are on a roll!
You def should have gotten a badge if youβre logged in to your account. Do you play from a browser or on the app?
Excellent!

pure luck, like any 2.
i would hate this if i started with something lame like steal and it left me with few options. grill is a cool starter so ig i’ll take it
Nice!
your luck today was starting with grill
Congrats! π¦ Why βlike any 2β?
2’s are pure luck, might as well have got it in 1 if you’re going to get lucky enough to get it in 2. didn’t even get to play the game in cases of 1 or few words left. didn’t get to play game if there were tons of words left. they’re just boring in most cases. this is 2 #6 i’ve gotten that was notable in any way since starting and hitting double L is uncommon and left me with 1 choice. if the solve was something like… “SLEPT” and i got it off GRILL, I didn’t really do anything, just got lucky
Lame like STEAL?
I take exception to that. Care to explain?
yeah, it’s an obviously great starter. and it’s a repeat so you’ve seen it already and you still use it? even with repeats… why? spin the wheel, take a chance. nothing wrong with using words like that occasionally, but every day? c’mon.
But itβs not a repeat. Hasnβt been played yet. Where are you getting your information from?
People play differently and there’s nothing wrong with that.
I don’t play a meticulously studied game like JD. I play no notes and no tools, save for the Five Forks list. But JD likes a different game, so good on ’em.
I play ‘hard mode’, so very seldom am I going through 10 letters in the first two guesses.
But, I use the same start word every day. Some days it’s helpful, some days not. That’s how I prefer to play. I enjoy the slow progress of, hopefully, getting better with the same start word.
I appreciate the freewheeling new word every day approach. It’s just not what I’m into.
Well done!

So frequent and convenient. And so small!

I’ll have to try that next time I’m there.

As for the golfing terms – what IS par on the wordle course…. π€·ββοΈ
I agree with you about not showing the solve as time wise we are so far ahead of the pack.
I believe par is 4.
