Five Forks Wordle List Cloud

Proposed Feature: Country + TimeZone

Idea: Adding Country and TimeZone to comments.

I’ve done some research, and it looks like I can append any commenter’s Country and Timezone to their comment using their device IP address. The idea is to get a sense of who is commenting from where and when. The comment times would still display in Eastern Time, because we need some common time reference for reply sorting.

I’m intentionally keeping the IP information broad, so not including city.

Do you think Five Forks Wordle list users would have any concerns with seeing this information or would they generally just like it?

Thanks for your feedback!

  1. Sorry not to answer sooner – my email sent it to junk…sigh.
I think this addition would be okay for me. U.S. and ET covers a large area. Maybe you could give the option of changing name. I use my real initials and a fake city name in NYT comments, others are divided between extreme caution and casting fate to the winds. One prominent Wordler has supplied a full name in some comments.
By now you may have decided already. ICloud is not consistent in its email sorting, so I’ll check more often.
Another thing: a lot of people use VPNs which can change things.

    1. Thanks for your thoughts ADK. My goal is to give everyone a sense of the span of time being played around the world. Any given puzzle is considered “today’s” word for over 48 hours! It’s tricky to manage for spoilers, but creating the date / puzzle number After Party has helped, where we see New Zealand and Australia posting in an East Coaster’s “tomorrow”.

I’ve backed all the way out to country and generic time zone. There are specific geographic time zones, but I’m not reporting that.

It is not exact information and can even be erroneous as with VPNs, travel, and daylight savings variations. But we do get a sense of Wordle’s reach.

Hi Jeb – sorry for late response – things have been a bit full-on….
Tho I cant speak for others, I feel many that are already happy to share comments likely wouldn’t mind – some may not be keen.
Personally I think it would be interesting and have no reservations myself
    Cheers

    1. Thanks for the feedback Glenda! And thanks for representing your time zone so well. Leading the Wordle way!

I posted a comment last night but I don’t see it here.

Anyway, I think it’s a good idea and the right amount of info.

It seems like a common feature for these kinds of comment boards, so I don’t see it as a problem. But it’s so hard to tell these days what people will be annoyed by. I say go for it.

  6. I think it’s interesting to know where people are, so I would not have an issue with this level of detail being shared about me.

  7. I’m ambivalent on this. It would be somewhat interesting to know the writer’s approximate location (or at least their VPN’s location), but I don’t see how that enhances the subject matter. If I had to vote, I’d say “no.”

If the reference would be USA Pacific or USA Mountain, that’s just enough info without being TOO MUCH info. I think it would be fine.
