Boil then reduce heat. Cook, stirring until thickened. Add lemon juice &amp; 1\/2 tsp. vanilla. Cool. Combine flour, soda &amp; 1\/2 tsp. salt. Beat butter &amp; shortening for 30 seconds<br \/>\n add 1\/2 c. sugar &amp; brown sugar &amp; beat until fluffy. Add egg, milk &amp; remaining teaspoon vanilla<br \/>\n beat well. Add dry ingredients, beat well. Chill dough. Take 1\/2 of dough, roll into 12&#215;10 rectangle on wax paper. Spread each retangle with half of date mixture. Roll, jelly roll style. Moisten &amp; pinch edges to seal. Wrap in wax paper. Chill. Cut into 1\/4&#8243; slices. On greased cookie sheet bake at 375 for 12 minutes.
